The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 8

Manchester City are threatening to break Fantasy Football.

An irresistible attacking force, they appear to be capable of skittling any defence that stands in their way and, in doing so, they are presenting Fantasy managers with an extraordinary array of options.

The challenge, of course, is to exploit their incredible form to the full. This becomes a more thankless task with the passing of each and every Gameweek.

Today’s 7-2 victory over a shell-shocked Stoke City took Pep Guardiola’s side to a total of 17 goals from their last three home matches and 24 from the last five Gameweeks.

I had to go back and re-check those numbers, leaving me wonder if we’ve ever seen a single team provide such a relentless avalanche of Fantasy points.

The underlying statistics are even more staggering.

A tally of 103 shots, 73 of which have arrived in the box with 28 big chances. Guardiola’s side have fired a shot every 4.6 minutes over the past five Gameweeks.

Three City players scored double figures in today’s victory, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva also fetching nine and seven points respectively. And this without Sergio Aguero in the mix.

Indeed, the array of choice available has become bewildering.

Raheem Sterling’s 15-points surely underlines his potential during this, his most prolific spell of his career. The “winger” has now scored six goals and supplied two assists over five starts in the last six Gameweeks.

Sterling has been in Guardiola’s starting line-up each time when available from Gameweek 3 onwards and, priced at just 8.0; he surely justifies his rank at the top of our midfield Watchlist. He is already the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9’s visit from Burnley.

Then there is Sane.

Perhaps a more traditional wide player, less inclined to tuck inside to flank the central striker, the German has produced four goals and three assists from the last five Gameweeks. However, he has only made the starting line-up over the last three.

De Bruyne and Silva remain the creators. Less explosive, they are nonetheless consistent points scorers that also scream for our attention. The latter struck his first goal of the season today, while De Bruyne chalked up a fifth assist.

It’s difficult to separate the pair, but Silva’s price, at 1.5 cheaper, is surely a key factor. Crucially, as today’s goal indicated, the Spaniard also appears to have upped his direct threat to opponents, adding a new convincing string to his creative bow.

These are just the standout midfield offerings. When we start to contemplate the situation up front, our decision process becomes even more cloudy.

Gabriel Jesus reacted to Sergio Aguero’s return from injury with a brace and a 13-point return today. We now have to consider how Guardiola will marry the pair.

He will surely want to avoid disrupting the almost perfect blend he has discovered, and neither Sane nor Sterling can really warrant exclusion.

Could that lead to Guardiola rotating his two central strikers, or will he revert back to pairing them in attack, sacrificing one of his support attackers?

Jesus owners will be counting today’s points but also looking ahead to the Gameweek 9 meeting with Burnley and wondering Pep’s next move.

But surely we have to question whether Jesus and Aguero warrant our investment regardless.

Even if their minutes are managed from here on, while City’s thirst for goals remains unquenchable, perhaps we just can’t lose.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It would be nice to get him back for those games.

All I know is that Lukakus stats are correct since 2014-15. Steven Naismith had a bettee record against the "big 6"!!

And if you take it a step further and look at hs international goals, mst of them are against the smaller nations.

            Conclusion = Flat track bully

Which is exactly what we want from a FPL striker. People call him a troll for some reason but if anything he is very consistent. Struggles vs most big teams, bullies most smaller teams.

For me it’s captain vs Hudds.
              Sell for Chelsea/Spurs.
Captain for Newcastle and the fixture after.
Sell for Arsenal/City and get him back for all the green fixtures after.

Be interested to know who you are going to "flip-flop" in and out of your team for Lukaku with this approach?

Everton challenged for a top 6 place last season and Lukaku was probably in the strongest team he has played in.
4 of those 5 goals was last season from 11 games ... better than 1 goal in 3 games
He is in a stronger team this season ... I will take the risk

Not quite, you can take away all the Lukaku goals from last season, and it doesn't make much difference to where Everton ended up.

He rarely scored the winner, happier to tuck in once the game was over...

Yip I am wrong - but it is very misleading and I wasn’t the only one caught out

After Vardy, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lukaku has scored more goals for a ‘non big 6 team’ against the ‘big 6’ teams than any other player during the seasons he has played in the PL

Maybe but that would hardly be surprising because he was miles better than any other non-top 6 striker.

If Jose played in big games like he does against the poorer sides I would 100 % have Lukaku. He would get service from his teammates which would have brought the best out of Lukaku. If you leave him isolated on his own then he is of no use, unlike a Vardy who absolutely loves such situations where he runs and chases everything.

Yesterday was nail in the coffin for Lukaku as an option in big games for me. Maybe he will get better service and perform better at home vs the big sides but yesterday’s tactics are enough for me to drop him after the Hudds game. Mind you I’ll be captaining him vs Hudds.

A bit late to the party ? Yip the stats are correct (read my apology below) but misleading.

The point was the ‘flat track’ bully claim but Lukaku was fourth highest scorer last season against the big six, with more goals than Kane, Sanchez, Ibra, Costa etc. ... he scored 5 goals in a season against the big 6 whilst playing for WBA and a hatrick against Man U for Everton

Ok missed the years and the stat is correct, apologies - but the post conveniently cuts off the seasons when he did score against the big 6. He scored 5 goals in one season for WBA against the big 6

Yeah it has everything to do with that and nothing at all to do with the fact that Vardy and Kane only became PL regulars in 2014.

First it was ‘stats are useless because they include his WBA numbers’. Now they’re useless because ‘they don’t include his WBA numbers’.

Yip I was surprised by the fact he scored 5 goals against the big 6 for WBA in his first proper season in the PL, completely admit this

The thing that annoyed me is that you posted ‘Lukaku is a flat track bully’ then quoted a tweet to support this, completely ignoring Lukaku scoring regularly in previous season in crap teams against the big 6.

15 goals in 57 games against the big 6 by the way, playing for Everton and WBA in only 9 winning games - not sure that is a flat track bully at all and probably better than any player except Vardy from non top 6 teams ?

See my longer response above. But in short, Lukaku is an excellent striker but he can’t do it without support. If Jose played to Lukaku’s strengths in big games he would be a season keeper for me.

Maybe the flat track bully label is unfair on him because he isn’t helped by the tactics deployed by his managers in big games but at the end of the day it is what it is. He’s not worth having in FPL when up against top 6 teams.

I suppose the bigger question, is why did Mouhrino play that way against Liverpool?

Was he really missing Fellaini that much?

                  • 9 Years
                  7 years, 18 days ago

The stats last season don’t suggest a flat track bully ? Apart from one season he scored regularly against the top 6.

Goals against big 6 last season (Lukaku probably played more games than some ?) in a team that probably set up to contain the opposition

                  Vardy 6
                  Hazard 5 Alli 5
                  Lukaku 4 Aguero 4 Llorente 4 Defoe 4
                  Kane 3
                  Ibra 2 Giroud 2 Costa 2
                  Sanchez 1

So, Lukaku scores more against lesser teams when Everton set up a bit more attacking, the same as other Top Six forwards

The issue is less of Lukaku being a flat track bully and more related to whether Man U go for goals against the top 6 - which is key and which you too recognise as perhaps the main consideration

It's commonly known Lukaku scores less against bigger teams, however he played for Everton during that time. So it is pretty obvious that he scored less since Everton as a team create just far less chances. I decided to keep him for Pool and Huddersfield and he could/should have scored against Pool. However Manu just parked the bus against Pool and I would think they will continue to do so in the other 2 difficult games coming up after Huddersfield. So I'm probably selling for Aguero after the Huddersfield game, but hope he can reward me for not selling to Jesus next gw, Jesus blank and Lukaku hatty will do!

      -Kane can't score until September.
      -Spurs can't win at Wembley.
      -Lukaku/Man Utd can't score more than 1.
-Lukaku can't score against the top 6.
-Kane can't score at home / Hazard can't score away.

I also have Bavies who is quite frustrating, i've got guts that Poch faked his illness. My other Def is Mee, Jones and Hunemeier.

It's hard to believe that Eriksen is the highest scoring player so far IMO. He's gone about his business quietly but he's showing consistency this season, and getting in on the goals too. Season keeper? I reckon.

Sad really. I hope he doesn't lose his potential. He could become a Scholes or Gerrard - but you can just tell he's more into the lifestyle that's on offer. Whereas those two were more no messing, and just play ball.

He could become a Gerrard alright potentially all action goal scoring midfielder complete with no league titles

              Scholes was genius

Alli's immense i love him but not himself right now saw him interviewed by tubes the other day i think he's a bit simple

I'm not doing particularly well, but I thought Watford looked poor actually. Arsenal were such a dispirited side though that it made Watford look good.

I might Lukaku to Morata myself. Have Hazard as well.

    Alonso-Jones-Bavies-Mee-Hunemeier
    Coutinho-Silva-Ritchie-Doucoure-Tarrol
    Kaku-Kane-Vardy.

    1FT, 0.1ITB

    Should I WC this team?

I'm seriously considering to downgrade Alonso. Hunemeier needs to go sooner rather than latter. Also I'm thinking of upgrading Doucoure to Richo for a better Wat cover. And I think I need to downgrade one of Kaku or Kane so that I can spread the $ better. Is that a plan worth WCing?

5-6 moves probably justifies a WC but I think your team in fairly decent and doesn't need that many changes

This doesn't jump out as a team that needs a WC. Wait for midweek games and then review.

This GW has been so frustrating.. 26 points with only Elliot, Ritchie and Vardy left. Bavies out and my first sub is Doucoure with 2pts, Tarroll with 8pts second sub. Somehow I pray that Ritchie wont play.

    I was already was for
    A. Erik to Sterling and about 5 mil ITB to allow
    Mbemba Jesus and Vardy
To Azpi Kun And Morata and play 523
But I just realized I could I have exact cash for Chalobah to Sterling - no hits and play 443. But this has no Morata or Kun.
Really appreciate your opinion on which is best. Thanks

    A. Elliot
Alonso Azpi Davies Jones Cedric Jones

    Sterling Sane

    Kane Jesus Vardy

    B. Elliot
    Alonso Davies Jones Cedric

    Eriksen Sterling Sane

    Kane Kun Morata

I did Mkhi + Morata for Silva + Jesus this week.

I still ended up with only 38 points with a couple to play.

It really matters if your captain fails.

I have had a lot of bad weeks and a few good ones. Captain by far the biggest factor
I am having a decent week but probably anyone except Kane from my front 6 and I would be smashing it. Getting captain correct is critical.

I managed 54 with a Kane captain but there is the small matter of a -8 so 46. Still got Vardy Cedric and maybe A.king

Depends what happens midweek. I'd only do it if I knew Kun was 100% guaranteed to start. He scored a cracker away at Burnley last season. 16 pointer that game I think.

Same as this for me re: Aguero.

Ideally a start I'd be interested.

Not sold on Abraham yet, currently have Vardy Kane Lukaku and definitely not happy.

Carroll is such a hero though.

See how everyone goes midweek of course, but we know he's the favourite when fit now...

Spurs and Man U's fixtures really not looking that great now. Especially considering how cagey Man U were v Liverpool. Lukaku doesn't have the pace of someone like Vardy to be as effective on their type of counter from the looks of it...

But couldn just be a knee-jerk from not a great GW and City's annihilations.

Got this lot ready for next GW. Almost did Mikki to Sterling or Chicha to Abraham but opted to save.. Regretting now, but it is what it is. What should I do?

    Elliot
    Davies - Jones - Bertrand
    Mkhi - Eriksen - Salah - Carroll
    Lukaku - Kane - Chicha

    Bench: Foster, Mbemba, Hegazi, Chalobah.

0.2M in the bank, and 2FT..
Should I do any transfers before price changes tonight? F.ex Mkhi out for Sterling..

Really in need of some advice! Would be highly appreciated 🙂

Fine... If it was my team...

I'd be fine keeping Chicharito another week, may well be lone striker with Carroll suspended and Brighton at home is as good a fixture as any.

Defense is fine and it's difficult to make a case for selling your four most expensive players, unless Aguero suddenly becomes a definite option for Lukaku.

Given you have 2FT, I'd do Mkhi to Sterling now and then look to save. If shit hits the fan you have another transfer else you can probably make a better use of 2FT next week.

Cheers man! I can afford Silva as well for Mkhi.. Why Sterling over Silva? I'm thinking more potential for Sterling, but game time might be an issue?

Go for Silva if you prefer him, I assumed you couldn't afford. I prefer Sterling as a fantasy option and he seems.in favour, so I'm just going to ride the wave while.I can. Silva a little safer.

Silva will be a consistent score throughout the season with few hauls. Sterling will haul but lots of blanks/bench in my opinion.

      .5 Cheaper too.

I just remember seeing Silva after week 1 when I had KdB and thinking this lad is doing it all for 2 mil less and didn't get him for weeks after!

I always hate owning Sterling but him and City are pretty impressive.

That .5 saved on Silva lets me upgrade a sh!tter on the team too. I've only 1 sub - who nicely enough, comes off the bench for davies todaqy with 8 pts, but anyways. Probably best to stick with Dave. Need to see some highlights me thinks

Captaincy looks difficult next week for those who don't own Lukaku like myself. Not sure about captaining Jesus or Sterling despite their hauls today. Might end up going with Kane again.

Would I be right in saying that Antonio is a streaky sort of player and may go on a run over nxt few games (Brighton, palace)??

Considering losing Eriksen (LIV, UTD) for Sterling and keeping Antonio..

Have my WC so only planning for 3 gws and have 2fts this wk.

I failed my earlier post so trying again.
    A. Two hits over 2 weeks to get to this 523

    Elliot
Alonso Azpi Davies Jones Cedric Jones

    Sterling Sane

    Kane Kun Morata

    B. Or 1 FT this week - Erik to Sterling to get this

    Elliot
    Alonso Davies Jones Cedric

    Eriksen Sterling Sane

    Kane Jesus Vardy

I like B but lack of both Kun and Morata worries me. If Kane is an away only captain then captain choices with B is limited
    Help please!! 🙂

    How does this team look?

    Foster, Elliot,
Davies, Jones, van Dijk, Mee, Naughton
    Eriksen, Salah, Sterling, Richarlison, Carroll,
    Kane, Lukaku, Abraham

Feels it gives good flexibility with formations etc
