Carling Victory Postpones Merseyside Clash

While the Anfield faithful celebrate their Carling Cup semi-final victory over Man City, the minds of Fantasy football managers have already moved on to more pressing matters.

Following on from their 3-2 aggregate win this evening, we have another blank fixture looming, with the promise of a double Gameweek to come.

Prior to this evening, Liverpool were set to play host to rivals Everton in Gameweek 26, on Saturday February 25. However, with a trip to Wembley to face Cardiff in the final on the Sunday now secured, this league fixture will be postponed.

As a result, Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures (wlv, TOT, mun, blank, ARS) tell a fairly grim tale, while their Merseyside rivals have an equally unappealing slate ahead of them (MCY wig, CHE, blank, qpr).

The flipside of this, of course, is that this fixture will need to be rearranged and will undoubtedly, at some point, give both of these teams a double Gameweek. It’s now down to the Premier League to find the most appropriate date to reschedule the clash.

For now, we can only really speculate when the double Gameweek will fall. With both sides uninvolved in European competitions, there will certainly be many midweek slots available. We will, of course, share the news of the rescheduled fixture as soon as word breaks.

While the Carling Cup has made the impact on the Merseyside, the FA Cup will likely be the major factor behind all impending double Gameweeks this season. With such a tight schedule ahead of the European Championship, fixture congestion awaits.

Every FA Cup game from the quarter-finals, through to the Wembley showpiece, will take place on a Premier League weekend. The last eight of the competition will be contested in Gameweek 29, so we can expect plenty more rescheduling and double Gameweeks to arrive for the sides who make it through the next two rounds and beyond.

Can't sleep with The City Question.

Not a straightforward one. Both viable options. Dzeko can be such a dud so it's a gamble whether he kicks off and scores big or not. Kompany is way ahead of Senderos in the CS department so it comes down to Dzeko paying off and getting the goals or finding a cheap striker Zamora/Welbeck/Helguson/Fletcher that can match him.

I think Komps & another striker

Doosra pointed out earlier that Helguson & Shotton are maybe not ideal picks for my WC team. I think he could be right altough maybe not in the case of Helguson. Thoughts on this team and any alternatives to Shotton and Helguson would be appreciated.

What I like about that range is that you can chop and change easily with little cost. If Helguson isn't cutting it then he can be switched to a whole range of options.

Yeah that is a good point. There is plenty flexibility to move the cheaper strikers about. Nice fixtures for QPR also.

What about Shotton? Stick or get Caulker?

What's your team currently? I'm guessing you must have quite a few of the more expensive players already. If I wanted to do emulate this I'd be looking at Walters as a cheaper alternative to Valencia.

Presumably Kelly and Shotton will be warming your bench most weeks.

Always a lot of debate about which league is the best in Europe

What about, in the years between WC and Euros, we borrow a concept from the yanks and have an All Star tournament?

So maybe the best 18 players or so from the top leagues in England, Spain, Italy and Germany, managed by that seasons winning manager in a round robin?

If that was to happen, La Liga would win as they'd mix together Real and Barca meaning it wouldn't show which league is the best but who has the best 18 players.

Maybe you could do it like Fantasy though, ie only a max of three players from anyone team, so you'd have to have "coverage" of at least 6 teams

Probably would never happen though due to insurance reasons though

Spot on. The gulf in La Liga between Real/Barca and the rest is colossal. It's damaging for the league and it is suffering as a consequence.

Maybe put a cap on 2 players per club in this round robin.

How are people fitting in Cisse/Ba?

I have the same old RvP, Aguero, Morison front 3, and not sure who to axe? Morison is the obvious choice, but there is a wide range of budget options near his price if he isn't working, and trying to downgrade to fit Ba/Cisse in to his spot would cripple the rest of my team.

    Does Aguero need to go?

RVP is a must and Aguero fixtures are excellent.

You say accommodating Ba would cripple your team but 2 changes can fix that. Downgrade Mata who is a waste of money for Sessegnon and get Zamora/Welbeck/Helguson until Ba returns.

what this guy said, wait on Ba until we see what sort he's in, you can do Aguero ➡ Ba in GW28 or 29 after the run of home fixtures ends and get 4-5 million to upgrade Kelly, Moses and Morison

Also we know very little about Cisse and it's misguided to think because he is from Senegal he will smash the goals in like Ba has been doing. He needs to settle into life in Newcastle, playing in the PL and getting familiar with his new team mates. Pardew still has Best & Ameobi so Cisse will be bedded in over time.

Zamora for now and see what the chat is in the lead up to Ba's first game back. By then you will know that he travelled back to the UK with/without any injuries, whether he trained well for Newcastle prior to their match and what Pardew is saying in the pre match press conference.

I don't think you need to watch Ba's form before deciding to put him in. I can see him slotting back in a getting back to scoring. He is enjoying his football for Newcastle and I don't see the goals drying up.

Keane is a good shout for a couple of weeks. I've looked at Hugo and if he comes into form (which he looks like he is) could be an interesting differential, Helgs, we don't know who Hughes will sign yet so his place could be under threat. If you need a striker for 6 or under Flethcer, Morision could be worth a punt. I'd also consider losing Walters or Sess to a cheaper option (McLean/Gylfi) and that will give you money for Ba and maybe to upgrade Kelly to Senderos

If ever there was a time to triple up on a team, its the league leaders with the run of fixtures that City have

Personally, although I never really buy into "coverage", doubling up on one position always seems a bit off. But it could work. To be honest, having watched a few recent City games, I might even think Dzeko over Kun because the latter just seems to be playing so wide and deep these days (and I have Aguero)

I'd be more concerned about the Stoke doubling up. Clean sheets not that regular these days plus Sorenson might not even be first choice after the last game

Cheers for the input. Stoke are normally fairly tight at home though, and Huth does offer a significant goal threat for a defender. I admit, Sorenson is a 'wait and see' at the mo - I think if he starts GW23 and doesn't have a shocker I'll go with him. Also, the 3 fixtures I'd play them in are SUN, SWA, NOR, which are decent.

Going to have a few tricky bench choice for GW24 and GW25 - who would you bench from:

GW24: Dempsey (mcy), Bale (liv) or Sigurdsson (wba).
        GW25: Walters (ful), Sigurdsson (NOR)

I've got Siggy also. The first time I ever saw him was scoring two pearlers against us (Scotland) in an U21 game, but I've watched him in his Swansea games and he looks proper quality. And his dead ball technique is excellent

Having said that, I could never bench Demps or Bale regardless of fixtures or venue, so I would bench Sigurdsson 24 and Walters 25, because Stoke away are pretty toothless

I dont know - someone posted a newspaper article on here earlier that suggested that both could be back for the Blackburn game

Clubs might have an agreement with national FAs that for insurance and team benefit purposes that key players are released early when games are irrelevant

In any case, his early return, and slower than expected value drop means that I will now be £0.1m short of doing Sturridge > Ba when he's back

Why am I always 0.1 short!?

Sorry but whats the point of asking people who will win a h2h? Even if 100 people says your team will win its still not a guarantee right 😕

and yes on Welbeck since he's in top form and you dont have other attacking United coverage.

Wondering if anyone has ever started the season with 2 teams, one they plan to actively manage each week and one they will leave as is (perhaps only making changes when injuries are confirmed). You'd expect the first to easily win, but would be pretty demoralising if the second did! I'm gonna do this next year I think.

Who's teams are you managing then? Pretty sure the rules say only one team per player - watch out that FPL Towers aren't monitoring this forum.... 😉

I played the Telegraph FF game a couple of years ago, and although it was rubbish, one good thing they did have is that they also gave you your score and rank of your original GW1 team

Disappointingly, that year there wasnt that much difference in score between my managed team and my original one......

It surely has to be Ba

He's up to pace with the English game and is proven

Cisse will have to settle, plus Pardew has demonstrated that he likes to stick with a settled team regardless of new signings, for example, look at how long it took Santon to get a run in the first team

I wouldn't be surprised if Cisse didn't get a start for a few games at least

Thoughts on running Dzeko for 2-3 weeks then switching to Kun?

Sure it would mean transfers to make funds, but it would be transfers that may be necessary anyway. Such as BAE out next GW, Sess out soon, and HBA to a wee bit cheaper mid.

    Just looking for some feedback.

    Sorensen, Caulker, Walters, Shotton

    1m in bank do I...

    a) Yak > Keane for one gwk (then switch to Helgusson/Rodallega)
    b) Yak > Keane then Keane Sess > McClean/Moses Ba (-4pt hit)
    c) no change, play walters/caulker and then get ba and downgrade sess/walters to mcclean/moses for free

hmmmm, taking a hit seems ill advised, as does playing Walters away at MU

Yak->Keane seems sensible, I just hate a one week transfer as you never know when an injury will come up and force your hand. Can you live with Keane for 3 weeks if necessary?

Depending upon when you got Walters, letting go could be doable? Walters to HBA/?

Blackburn at home allow more goals than QPR on da road.

thanks for the advice, yeah i thought about walters out but i think id rather downgrade sess after this week, fixtures and pens being the big reason, plus my other attackers are strong. i might wait on getting in ba until gw26 rather than try to fit in for gw24

Hmm. I'd probably lean towards B then - I think you just cause yourself more headaches by having 8 attacking players than deserve to play every week.

You'd be kicking yourself if you had a Dzeko on the bench the week he kicks a random hattrick.

Depends on the rest of your team and planned formation really

If you're going to play all three of those regardless of option then I'd say probably A

Aguero is, infuriatingly, getting almost f*ck all clear cut chances these days. And Tony's on top form

If you're going to play 4-3-3, you don't really need Valencia with your midfield I don't think (any four out of those five are equally likely to score similar) If you were going down the A route you would surely just be Sturridge + Rooney > Ba and Dzeko

If Dzeko doesn't work out you would still have the money to do Dzeko > Aguero

I think Williamson is a very dubious starter

If you're constrained by cash, I'd say Senderos > Kelly (because they both seem as regular starters as each other with similar returns) and that'll give you £0.3/0.4 to upgrade Williamson to maybe to Shotton / Woodgate / Santon / Caulker?

Williamson is the only recognised CB they have now that Taylor is out for the season. He's a guaranteed started, barring injury. He's also the cheapest way into the Newcastle defence.
