The Scout Squad – Gameweek 27

Choosing the right mix of Michelin-starred big-name players and their bargain bucket counterparts could well lead to some serious selectorial indigestion among our Scouts this week.

One midfielder, Alexis Sanchez, appears to be too rich for the blood of our entire ‘expert’ panel, the key ingredients of which are Fantasy Football Scout regulars Jonty, Paul and Mark and Career Hall of Fame luminary Peter Kouwenberg.

But trying to find room on the menu for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Marcos Alonso is going to require a serving or two of some rather more humble Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pies to keep things from spilling over the Scouts’ budgetary waistband.

That could mean a start in goal for a Swansea City stopper and a dish or two made from the finest Stoke City pottery.

So before this entire food analogy passes its sell by date, here’s a taste of the Scouts’ creations, complete with simple, step-by-step instructions as to how they cooked them up.

The final 11-course meal will be served later in the week.

Jonty Says…

I’ll be arguing the case for value this week, particularly in midfield with an array of well-priced options on offer.

Controversially, this means there is no place for Alexis Sanchez.

Yes, his Gameweek 26-high shot tally of six against Huddersfield Town impressed. But he lost the ball more times than Man United player in a single fixture this season and it that continues to blight his bonus point potential, I’m concerned that he will struggle to justify his 11.7 price tag.

So I favour the slightly cheaper Romelu Lukaku for United attacking cover and have instead focused on some budget options to stock our midfield.

The same rationale applies to my omission of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, who is not producing the sort of home returns I’d expect from a 10.6 midfielder.

The Belgian has only scored two of his nine goals at Stamford Bridge, both arriving in Gameweek 15 when Newcastle dropped by. I think Marcos Alonso (7.4) and Olivier Giroud (8.2) offer far greater value among Blues assets, and they also ensure we keep another midfield slot free for bargain hunting.

Everton’s clash with Crystal Palace puts Theo Walcott (7.3) in my thoughts as the first of three strong value midfield offerings. In his previous Goodison Park outing, the former Arsenal winger scored a brace, while the Eagles have failed to keep a clean sheet and have shipped seven in their last four road trips.

Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri (6.1) is another kindly-priced midfielder worthy of our attention. The Swiss international scored against Bournemouth last time out and hosts a Brighton defence that has just one shut-out in their last six away days.

The midfield bargains keep coming with Watford’s on-loan Barcelona man Gerard Deulofeu (6.0) impressing with a goal and assist against Chelsea on Monday. Next up for the former Everton winger is a visit to a free-falling West Ham unit that last earned a clean sheet back in Gameweek 18.

Meanwhile, in goal, I’ll be arguing for the inclusion of Swansea City’s Lukasz Fabianski, who has racked up more saves (102) than any other stopper. A shut-out looks likely too, as visitors Burnley have struggled on the road, scoring just three times over their last six away matches – the third worst tally in the Premier League over that timeframe.

Paul Says…

Along with the usual suspects, I’m bringing in a pair of Potters for Stoke’s home clash with Brighton.

Paul Lambert’s side have claimed clean sheets in both home matches in his charge, while their visitors have scored just one goal in their last seven road trips.

Since being handed a debut in Gameweek 23, no defender has produced more key passes or successful crosses (six on both occasions) than their new right-back Moritz Bauer.

Shaqiri’s Fantasy potential looks to have improved with Lambert at the helm over the last three Gameweeks.

During that stretch, the playmaker has bagged a goal and assist, while only one midfielder – Kevin De Bruyne – can better him for both shots on target (five to seven) and chances created (eight to nine).

Costing 1.6 less than Sergio Aguero, De Bruyne is also my preferred Man City attacker for the home encounter with Leicester.

I’d rather have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a second premium striker for the north London derby.

Spurs won’t be sitting back and looking to defend against the Gunners, and I just feel that the new arrival’s pace, allied with the creativity of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, can thrive on the space afforded from the vast Wembley pitch.

Peter Says…

There’s a bit of tension between form and fixtures this week at several grounds, notably Stamford Bridge (where a struggling Chelsea welcome bottom of the table Baggies) and at Wembley, where post-Sanchez Arsenal will be hoping to repeat their North London derby victory from earlier in the season.

I’m struggling to predict the outcomes, but I’m confident enough that goals are on the menu at the Etihad and St Mary’s Stadium.

Mohamed Salah’s incredible form effectively means that we are just choosing four to go with the Egyptian, and the recent form of James Ward-Prowse gives me a budget solution in that Sunday afternoon fixture.

Aguero is joined by De Bruyne in my squad, with the Belgian consistently returning both goals and assists, although I also think Jamie Vardy may keep to form and score against another big opponent – City look more vulnerable at the back than usual.

I expect to get pilloried for backing Hazard over Sanchez as my third big-money midfielder and I won’t be shocked if the Chilean makes the final cut.

But even when Chelsea turn in a totally abject performance, Hazard is more than capable of salvaging FPL points.

Add to that the fact that West Brom’s defence tends to be more porous than Newcastle’s, and I’m going bravely/blindly with the Belgian.

Both form and fixture favour a Bournemouth win at Huddersfield – I may have brought Callum Wilson in last week just in time for him to blank, but Huddersfield’s defence has been one of the worst in the league recently.

As indeed has its attack, which is why I’m also installing Charlie Daniels (Nathan Ake a sensible enough alternative) in my side.

And Ben Mee…well, he’s GOT to score this weekend, surely?

Mark Says…

I’m hopeful that some frugal business in defence can allow for a big spend in attack, paving the way for a Harry Kane and Aguero partnership.

Throw in the Shaqiri and Walcott options in midfield and Friday’s Picks could well be very unfamiliar, perhaps even deployed with three up front once again.

I’ve overlooked Man United’s attack entirely, conceding to include David De Gea as my only nomination from Jose Mourinho’s men. For me, the more assured options – Sanchez and Lukaku – just don’t justify their outlay. With Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba uncertain of their roles and even their pitch-time, that renders the United attack a no-go.

I can see Hazard’s inclusions as the major flashpoint come Friday’s shake-down; a battle that I’m unlikely to win.

Chelsea’s form and confidence are both woeful, but a reaction against the lowly Baggies would be a surprise. I also feel that, without Andreas Christensen, Chelsea will need two or even three goals to win the match. In that scenario, I believe we need to cover, and if I lose the fight for Hazard, I’ll be pushing for Olivier Giroud’s inclusion.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 17 will be PKW, who is in his seventh season, with 2015/16’s 3,154 finish his best to date.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 26’s champion Tigerite was narrowly beaten by the Scouts 42-41.

The one to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

More reasons to just keep the captaincy on Salah until GW31. If being the most consistent and explosive fantasy asset all season, the highest owned in an ultra-attacking team is not good enough for some people and probably ending the season with the highest point tally ever in FPL (beating the likes of Lampard, Suarez, RVP and Ronaldo), he are some more reasons:

    - His baps potential is clearly on the rise for 2 reasons. 1) He is far more clinical than at the first half of the season. 2) Coutinho the bonus magnet has left the team and Mane no longer nailed for the full 90 mins and in inconsistent form. His only real contender for baps attacking-wise is Firmino and even he can be hot and cold as we know.
    - His next five include 3 plum home fixtures and Liverpool are solid at home. The away games are against woeful Southampton and park the bus Man Utd. He has the fixtures to maintain his crazy form and also a good chance of the extra CS point.

For me, barring injury or suspension, I am probably leaving the armband on him for 4 of the next 5 GWs especially as he is my only Liverpool attacker and I want to enjoy his goals not cheer against them. I also have Sterling KDB combo so any hauls from Man City are probably covered.

Salah has Westham and Newcastle at home. I'd still pick him over Kane. I might consider Kane for GW29 but not for 28. Depends on form and CL ties.

Well Kane and Kun have CL as well. Actually Kane has a much more difficult CL tie and Man City have only Aguero as a striker and the league is practically already won. If anyone is going to protect his players its Pep more than Klopp. Especially that City have a chance to win it unlike Liverpool

For me a double digit haul is an explosive haul. How many times have each managed though? Salah is in a league of his own regarding the frequency of hauls and also the frequency of hauls. Kun and Kane blank way too much for my liking especially in games that you back them to haul.

          What's a 20-25 haul then?

It's more explosive ergo: most explosive. I. Not arguing with frequency, overall score, captain choice etc, but the one thing we haven't seen of Salah yet is ability to match historically the most explosive players. Single game weeks are a consideration here, not only averages. This I think is why we see other captain choices despite Salah's incredible consistency

Assuming you captain them consistently it's moot, the problem with Kane and kun is that we've all captained the 1s this season, the 19s aren't necessarily clear

I'm not advocating for. Just pointing out Kane Kun have a higher ceiling. People get very defensive about that and chuck straw men at me arguing why Salah is a better choice, like I don't know this and captain him duh

This. Much easier to nail Salah's hauls. With Agueo and Kane they hauled when we didn't expect it most of the time and we've captained their 1s and 2s so many times.

So you conveniently put Salah at the lower end and Kun at the higher end. Both have 3 15+ hauls.

i'm going for Kane, its all about building up the head of steam for me , as a team.

Spurs at home, MUST be up for it as they are against their biggest rivals...they have the ability to go at Arsenals throats in this match and facts show they tend to do so at Wembley, - 5 v saints, 5 v stoke, 4 v everton & 2 v utd in all the last home results (barring west ham which we all remember spurs DGW and seemed tired and west ham parked the bus), this to me relfects on the state of all of those defences (question is ..is arsenals defence closer to Utd's, likely to concede 2, or closer to saints everton or stoke?. Therefore i believe Spurs and Kane will be ready and if he gets even the slightest sniff and manages to score 1 this will start the snowball :))...also didnt someone once say that when a team opens up and comes at Spurs, Kane loves it?!

Liverpool on the other hand, inconsistent away (swansea game less than 2 weeks ago)...im sure they will beat southampton, but i am asking who out of Liverpool or spurs is most likely to be set on fire ...NBA Jam style! 🙂

ive probably jinxed it lol but Kane all the way!

Swansea parked the bus though. These are the kind of teams that could trouble Liverpool. Southampton is a team that likes to keep possession and this plays into the hands of Liverpool.

When you're choosing between several too captaincy candidates, there's a key question to settle: are you looking for
      1) predictability
      2) explosiveness

For me, I get more frustrated at a captain fail than I get excited at a 15+ explosion, so I go for the consistent, predictable one.

Mawson is the proven pick but liverpool have a lot of home matches and gw31 fixture. So vvd is a Maverick pick but could work great. Mawson is a safe pick. Depends on ur managing type

I feel like playnig Francis (vs HUD away) and benching Lingard (vs NEW away). Should I put the bong down and log out or a clever move? Thinking the chances of a Bournemouth clean sheet are better than Lingard returns?

Don’t think either will return so not too much to think about 🙂

Lingard has come off the bench before and scored a few so we know he can do damage whenever. I’d just bench Francis

What to do with this lot?

    De Gea
    Jones - Stones - Long - Ogbonna
    Sterling - Salah - KDB - Mahrez
    Kane - Firmino

    Speroni - Crouch - T Carroll - Maguire

    1 FT 0.7itb

I've a lot that could be better that's not urgent to change; Speroni, Carroll, Crouch. Then a few I'd like to move soon; Ogbonna and Long. And no idea what to do with Mahrez

          Yup I agree.

However you're looking at a player who's very unlikely to be involved this GW, as well as for the foreseeable future. No one knows when Mahrez will be back.

You could use the remaining funds from Mahrez's sale to upgrade Crouch to Wilson to balance out the side.

Need some input here, my team looks like this. Have 1 FT and 0.9m ITB.

    DDG - Coleman
    Ota - Jones - Alonso - (Bardsley) - (Kelly)
    Hazard - Sterling - Salah - Allen - Martial
    Kun - J.Ayew - (Quaner)

Kelly is out, and so might bardsley be. Martial didn't play more than 10mins last week, so might not start this week either.

    Do I do: Martial -> Walcott ?

Interested to hear people's views on the following.
Deciding who to captain between the likes of salah and Kane in relation to ML opponents.
If none of nearest rivals have Kane but all have salah what is the better option to captain?
Salah because it could give you extra salah over them or block their captain.
Kane because a score could give you massive advantage.
Oh and the answer isn't pick whoever you think gets most points.

This GW surely Salah. You points above carries less weight. It is straightforward Salah this GW. Kane is a no go. The theory that he always score against Arsenal is flawed. Arsenal is ecpected to be a better defensive unit than Soton and will provide more resistance.

    Foster

    Otamendi - Smalling - Alonso

    Salah - Sterling - Son - Ramsey - Lingard

Aguero (C at the moment) - Firmino - Wilson

    Subs: Elliot - Ogbonna - Mbemba - +1 mid

    1ft 0.9 itb

I am tempted to bench Lingard or Ramsey as Son is at home and no Kane, the Arsenal fan in me wants to play Ramsey.
Trying to save the ft or could do Son>Walcott or ogbonna out for a gw31 player but suppose that could wait.

    Any thoughts appreciated..

I am also chasing ML leader who's ahead of me by 14 odd points (clawed back 130 point deficit in last 6 weeks) , has Kane, Aguero up top to my Aguero, Firmino, Wilson, has no WC and has to take out Mahrez this week probably for Walcott.

A couple of conflicting Hot topics on captaincy this week.

Isn’t it just the case the Salah, Kane and Kun are all similar choices this week? Not sure we need a load of hot topics specifically directing us to one of these players when it can be justified either way with ‘creative’ use of stats.

I'm in serious danger of wasting an FT this week. I just don't know what to do!

Plan was to move Gross out, but I've got to keep him until his fixtures really turn now haven't I? I could get De Gea in, but this will limit what I can do with Lingard and Gross in a few weeks. At present I have the option of getting another big mid in, maybe Mane as double Liverpool served me well at Xmas, getting Silva back who I sold last week for Theo, or getting Firmino back in who I started with for Quaner in a 3-4-3... Tough. Can't see any real housekeeping moves needed either?!
