Euro 2012

Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Update the Assist Rule

It’s come to our attention that since we published our previous guide to the McDonald’s game, there has been an important tweak to the assist rule that is beneficial to Fantasy managers.

Beforehand, the game had simply replicated the rule of the Champions League format, also run by Uefa. Assists were not awarded for shots that rebounded off the woodwork or opposition goalkeeper, neither were they granted if the goalscorer had to beat an opponent before scoring, as stated below:

An assist is awarded when the goalscorer receives the ball directly from a team-mate (including the goalkeeper) and scores without having to take the ball past an opponent. If the assist pass takes a small deflection which does not change the direction of the ball, it will still be given. No assists are awarded for own goals or penalties. Live assists are provisional and will be reviewed within 24 hours of the match.

Now, however, they’ve made it a little more straightforward for us. Ahead of Friday’s kick-off, the addition of a few handy alterations should consequently lead to higher scoring rounds across the board.

It’s refreshing to see that rebounds will now count – this seemed an obvious flaw and brings the rule system more in line with most Fantasy games. A player now also receives assist points if he makes the final pass prior to the ball finishing in the back of the net, regardless of whether the scorer needed to beat an opponent – again this is a positive step.

Although players will not be awarded assist points for converted penalties or free-kicks, if a player is brought down in the box and his side are subsequently awarded a spot-kick, he will still receive an extra point, regardless of whether the ball finishes in the back of the net or not.

A player will be credited with a “goal assist” when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.).
An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.
When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker.
Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored.
No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick.
No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

Hopefully this will be the one and only rule change to the game prior and during the tournament. However, those long in the tooth may remember that this wasn’t quite the case during the FIFA World Cup. We’ll stay on the look out for any further subtle changes and alert you should any arise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

actually I can hear everywhere that Malafeev may start. I am not sure about that.

Will we know that before 08/06 1745 which of them will start ? If Malafeev, then yes, I will get him and upgrade Perquis --> Piszczek or Muller --> Podolski

I'd go for odds of 6/1-12/1 to make it worth winning, but not an absolute long shot.

I've got a tenner on England to finish bottom of the group at 10/1.

      I've put £25 on Germany winners/RVP top goalscorer at 50/1 🙂

For something a little more likely, why don't you do an accumulator? Russia, Germany and Poland as an example returns something like 400 for 50?

If anyone likes money, I think odds of 9/2 on RVP being the Top Premier League Scorer during the Euros is simply unavoidable. His nearest challengers are Balotelli, Torres, and Podolski.

I think the majority of us on here expect RVP to start for the Dutch and they should make it out of their group and rack up some goals. 9/2 just sounds ridiculously good. Hills have him at 6/4!

Blue Square, 888Sport, and Coral. Get on!

Another bet I'm tempted by is Iniesta to be the top Spanish scorer, at 16/1. With question marks over Llorente's and Torres' gametime, I think Iniesta (a nailed on starter, and playing as an inside forward) could get some goals.

      I don't really think so.

RVP plays more for the team in the no. 9 for Holland. Doubt he'll score as many as some of the Germans. I tip Muller or the central German striker to hit the most goals, them or Benzema.

You wouldn't want to have Shirokov or another midfielder over Krohn-Delhi? Affelay is a great punt if he ends up starting. You've also got an exciting set of strikers, but do you think Cristiano will perform against a stubborn Germany side? Portugal haven't exactly convinced me in their friendlies...

Krohn-Delhi is more of a differential that I need and against a weak Dutch defense so might nick in a goal or two. As for Ronaldo, he is the best player in the tournie and not having him could be catastrophic as he can always explode

Friendly World Cup tactics. My partner is WCing GW2 so I'm WCing GW3 to maximise our potential. Therefore I am trying to build a team for 2 weeks, meaning I have just the one transfer to use.

I would go B with Zhirkov/Anyukov instead of Berezutski. You would still have enough money to bring in Ronaldo

need 0.5 just in case Chalkis doesn't start. If he does I'll make that switch before the deadline.

Comments by fellow players suggest he would be ready for his first match. We have to wait and see.

Would be very much obliged if you'd cast a critical eye over this lot:

    Given, Chalkias
    Zhirkov, Kadlec, Debuchy, Perquis, J.Olsson
    Özil, Iniesta, Sneijder, Yarmolenko, Błaszczykowski
    Benzema, Ibrahimović, Jelavić

Jelavic isn't 100% nailed on, so you might want to downgrade one of Iniesta and Sneijder to upgrade him.

Keep an eye on the Greek goalkeeper situation.

Get rid of J Olsson and get Strinic in.

Personally not a fan of Iniesta, I'd prefer to have Alonso and then perhaps use the extra cash to upgrade Jelly.

These are all given under the assumption that you have 0 in the bank?

    Interesting, from the BBC...

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic says Nikica Jelavic will spearhead his attack, particularly considering his successful spell with Everton in the second half of the Premier League season.

"[His impact has been] so strong and so sudden that he was quite unbelievable," says Bilic.

Any guesses for each team's top scorer at the Euros??

I'm thinking about doing an accumulator bet with maybe 10 of them in with trebles, doubles etc..

    What do you guys think?

    Croatia - Mandzukic
    Czech - Rosicky
    Denmark - Bendtner
    England - Gerrard
    France - Benzema
    Germany - Podolski
    Greece - Samaras
    Holland - RVP
    Italy - Cassano
    Poland - Lewandowski
    Portual - Ronaldo
    Ireland - Robbie Keane
    Russia - Kerzhakov
    Spain - Iniesta
    Sweden - Ibrahimovic
    Ukraine - Konoplyanka

Without labouring through, I'd say Young for Eng (2 gaols) and how about Fabregas for an outsider for Spain. Seems a fair chance they'll play with a recognised forward and will use a fluid midfield feat Cesc.

Like Podolski as well, just backed him at 28s for Golden Boot.

Cesc is very likely to be benched

        Busguets Alonso
        Silva Xavi Iniesta
        Torres/Llorente

Looks to be first choice. Sneaky punt on Silva perhaps though.

Was my initial view Mac, but I'm not so sure that Bosque believes in Torres given form, or that he plans to use Llorente outside of as a game changer off the bench. This is an opinion shared by Jordi Quixano, the journo that wrote the Spain 'Network' piece for the Guardian.

They do not. There's also a amnesty after Grp stage. " yellows in Grps will mean a QF ban, but any single yellows will get wiped ahead of QF.
