Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Shinji Kagawa

Arriving from Borussia Dortmund early last summer, Shinji Kagawa looked primed to become a key midfield target for the 2012/13 season. Having helped steer Jurgen Klopp’s side to the title in his final year in the Bundesliga, the Japan international’s displays in the role in “the hole” suggested United were set to shift formation to 4-2-3-1 and hand him a place behind Wayne Rooney as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to wrestle the title back from City:

Three days before their Gameweek 1 opener at Everton, however, the acquisition of Robin Van Persie turned the Fantasy landscape on its head and made a significant dent in Kagawa’s prospects. While the Dutchman ran riot and grabbed the goals that recaptured the crown, the former Dortmund man struggled to settle in his debut season, with a knee injury and occasional game time on the left flank limiting his potential in what proved to be Ferguson’s final term in charge at Old Trafford.

Key Factors

  • Wayne Rooney’s decision to hand in a transfer request towards the end of last season looks key to Kagawa’s prospects. Omitted from the United squad for the final couple of league games under Ferguson, Rooney seems determined to leave after a lacklustre campaign – having dropped deeper to accommodate Van Persie, his possible departure would free up Kagawa’s preferred position in “the hole” and afford him the chance to slot in behind Van Persie.

  • New manager David Moyes’ penchant for a lone striker system may also be advantageous. While it’s all too early to ascertain just what sort of formation the former Everton boss has in mind as he takes the Old Trafford reins, his use of Marouane Fellaini as the most advanced central midfielder last term was hugely beneficial to Fantasy managers. Providing Rooney leaves, Kagawa’s playmaking abilities seem the natural fit amongst United’s current midfield crop – given that he produced 13 goals and eight assists from 31 appearances in his final year at Dortmund, his suitability to the role is more than apparent.

  • Having finished last season with just six goals and four assists over 20 appearances, it’s possible that Kagawa is in line for a slight drop in price next time out. Starting last season at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he racked up just 87 points and can resultantly be expected to slip to around 8.0 when the player lists are revealed next month. Given that previous mid-price options such as Fellaini, Michu and Kevin Nolan are set for a hefty price hike after their respective displays in a similar position, the Japan international could prove to be a little more budget friendly when assessing the midfield landscape.

  • Kagawa’s hat-trick and 21 point FPL against Norwich in Gameweek 28 highlights his capabilities. Granted, six goals over 1,314 minutes was far from impressive but compared to United’s other midfielders, it’s positively prolific – Nani and Antonio Valencia both notched one goal apiece, while Ashley Young failed to find the net at all last season. New boy Wilfried Zaha also offers an option but after a campaign where Michael Carrick was United’s highest scoring midfielder with a mere 101 FPL points, Kagawa could be primed to become a key player as the Moyes era gets underway.

Once the prices come out do you think you could pick a squad and leave it alone, no tinkering allowed?

Not sure I agree with that at all. At the end of the day Wenger will deploy his players as he see's fit. I think this would apply when moving to any of the bigger clubs, we pay your wages, we play you where we see fit.

i'm not suggesting he will be able to refuse to play as an AMC. It just seems that if there are as many teams in for him as rumoured then I believe he will chose a side that will play him in his favoured position more often than not.
And Arsenal do need a proper strong DM so it looks a perfect fit to me

If Thiago becomes Moyes first big name signing I will be very happy with that bit of business. Him and Isco were the stand out performers in the U21 tournament and he is the type of player we have needed for years to replace the likes of Scholes. Anderson has never cut it for me, and although I am a fan of his and his style of play I think Thiago fits into United's midfield like a dream. Ether playing along side Carrick or just ahead of him depending on formation etc he'll be guaranteed game time unlike he would if he stays at Barca and apparently Moyes has been tracking him for some time even when he was at Everton 😯

There's basically a spam filter which is triggered by certain things. The most common complaint currently is that it blocks things with too much punctuation (e.g. lots of dashes attempting to format a table) Assuming it looks ok one of the admin will release it and it will be posted.

Spanish newspaper Marca say 21-year-old Malaga midfielder Isco would rather stay in Spain and join Real Madrid instead of a transfer to Manchester City.

"The player has an offer on the table from Manchester City, but he'd prefer to go to Real," said Marca. "His release clause currently stands at 35m euros, but this amount is open to negotiation."

"Isco seems to have opted to make Real Madrid his next stop. The player is closer than ever to Real."

Marca report that Real Madrid and Malaga are scheduled to have another meeting today in an attempt to agree a deal.

If City don't get Isco, Dzeko could become an option.

    City with Isco

    Yaya, Fernandinho

    Navas, Isco, Silva

    Aguero

    City without Isco

    Yaya, Fernandinho

    Navas, Silva. Aguero
    Dzeko

(Nasri could factor in over Dzeko of course)

    Reasoning is this

Probably Tommy's 5-way but I have written a program analysing all 15,000 combos for the best 5 way rotation. It's still a work in progress because the results are very hard to digest; there's just so much data.

Only 15,000 combos? I reckon there are far more 20*19*18*17*16=1.8M and thats not even including doubling or tripling.

That's what I thought at first but it isn't right. You're right that I'm not including doubling or tripling but this is the formula:

              http://www.mathwords.com/c/combination_formula.htm

              n = 20
              r = 5
              Total = 15,504

At one point I had a mental handle on why it isn't 1.8m but I lost my grip on it. My maths is not what it once was 🙂

I remember now, it's to do with ordering. 20*19*18*17*16 gives many, many duplicate combinations

                Ars, Avl, Che, Eve, Ful
                Ars, Avl, Che, Ful, Eve

are different combinations if order matters but it doesn't to us

Last season I started with Ivanovic then changed to Zabaleta, Rafael then Baines/Vertonghen to finish.

I like two constants and a three way rotation myself. Like Triggerlips very good template I like a 6m 5m and a 4.5m, 4m, 4m to rotate.

Depends on the pricing obviously though. If for example Shawcross is 5m, a Chelsea/Man City defender can be got for 6m...well, then I'd play them both everyweek (taking into account Chelsea's missing week) and rotate the others. Much simpler for me.

i've liked that the past two seasons. often getting one 6.0 defender alongside a 5.0 or 5.5 defender (was Enrique for long portions of each season for me).

however given the wide range of big hitters available to us this year, combined with the high price tags of rvp and bale, i'm thinking that one big hitter (chelsea or city defense) alongside a 4 way rotation might be the better option. hence i've been busy plugging away at 4 way rotations: http://tinyurl.com/4wayrotations

so far i've come up with a few that look to be promising but i'm still working to see if I can find any better combinations

That's a very good point about this season's array of big hitters.

Bale, RVP, Hazard, Mata, Kagawa, Silva, Navas, Higuain, Walcott, Cazorla, Coutinho, Heno..... that is a mind boggling set of chaps to fit into a side.

exactly! and you're leaving out Suarez and Sturridge. not to mention a spurs striker if they sign one as well as lukaku or cavani (or someone else mou signs) as main man up top for chelsea

but yes I agree that a 3 way rotation is simpler and easier to use but it also normally takes up a larger portion of your budget on defense

We all like to have that more expensive player in defence to cling to who is apparently immune to rotation. But I dont think I have seen any actual evidence to support this tactic and that the expensive guy actual offers value to the team.

For me its 5 ubers with 2 uber keepers.

what've you done in the past though?

5 ubers seems a bit much to me. i'll be going with 2 cheap gk's (9.5 or less hopefully) along with 4 cheap rotating defenders and one big hitter

The biggies never really delivered. I will switch to big at the jan WC and over christmas as it seems to work out then, but early it just didnt work. Obviously Rafael and Ivan were the anomalies last year, but I know I wont manage to pick the right ones.

Usually go with 3 way ( 2 expensive or mid-priced defenders plus 3 rotating ones), because I go for attacking potential and can´t afford to take the risk of benching a defenders goal or assist.

I usually like 1 expensive, 1 midprice who plays most weeks, and 3 cheap rotating. Looking at it mathematically, you end up with each cheap player playing 1/3 of the tim this way, rather than 1/2 the time with four cheapies.

HOWEVER, I want to try and go uber cheap this year to start with, and with the way the fixtures have panned out I think its the perfect chance. So 4 or 5 cheapies for me this year, and hang the consequences!

agreed. that's roughly what i've done the last two years.

and agreed on that account as well. though i'll be having one big hitter in defense.
here's a rotation spreadsheet that Berbagod and I have been working on:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiIgkb7euD-9dHZqZWVBM01iWjhveGRpSHgya0VFTUE#gid=0

it's nowhere near complete as we're still looking into other rotations but it's a start at least. hope it can help you plan out your 4 or 5 way rotation

Robbie Brady (HUL) played most of the season in the left wing back role but is known more as an attacking winger (4 goals + 13 assists). He could be listed as a defender because of Hull's 3-5-2 formation last season and though giving us an enticing OOP prospect. However, he doesn't offer security of starts since only started 25/45. but if he's priced 5 or less and listed as a defender would you fancy him?? BTW Hull rotate well with Norwich, West Ham and West Brom.

my idea is 8-10 managers drafting EPL players (in snake-style rounds) into squads so that no single EPL player is duplicated on any squads in the league. after drafting, all players not picked would be available as "free agents" for people to select at a first-come, first-serve basis. in this way, when a player scores he's ONLY helping one squad, and it's much more of a reflection of actual squad management and scoring.

this is the way MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL fantasy are run here in the States.

              http://www.fantasyleague.com/Pro/GameGuide/Default.aspx

you have to pay for that one, and also, it's auction-based selecting, not snake-style drafting.

as for me, I'm in the Knoxville, TN area. i'd love to visit Seattle and catch a SFC game sometime, though. seems a nice area of the country!

They should never have been expelled the way they were. And it turned out that they were not breaching the rules after all so the whole thing was handled badly. The SPL needs both clubs in to stand half a chance of having any stability.

With so many healthy defenders for Totts. What do ya think about Vertongens chances are of ending up in the midfield this season?

I think he;s likely to be first choice cb with Dawson and Kaboul competing or he'll play lb with those 2 at cb.

unlikely to happen, Guarin could be on his way there... if he doesn't go surely Villas Boas will look for an option somewhere else..

Caulker back in his Swansea days was awesome. I remember having him and Siggy and getting a Siggy goal from a Caulker assist. Those were the days

Zero. He even said he chose us over Arsenal because Wenger wanted to convert him to a midfielder (not that I blame him - he could arguably be better there)

Depending on if we sign a LB it'll likely be Vertonghen + one of Kaboul/Dawson apart from West Ham/Stoke where Vertonghen will go LB.

really doubt it'll happen but Abidal could be a good signing for you guys, and would probably be pretty cheap too

Last season I took tons of hits transferring players that'd been injured, often for them to play the next game and have a points bonanza or really only miss one match. But even when they really were out for a couple weeks, I think I made a lot of mistakes by not being more patient.

How long do you hang onto an injured player who's expected to be out for more or less 2-3 weeks?

Depends how first team they are. A 5th defender can rot until the next wildcard/end of the game. But you can't carry a crocked elite striker for more than 2 weeks.
