Pre-Season

Friendlies Round Up – Wednesday

David Silva gets amongst the goals and Edin Dzeko is at the double as City hit Milan for five in yesterday’s Audi Cup clash. Christian Benteke takes his tally to four in two starts as Villa net five for the second match in succession, while Kevin Mirallas notches once again for Everton as Roberto Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 against Italian giants Juventus.

Man City 5 Milan 3
Manuel Pellegrini’s side gave Fantasy managers a hint at what may potentially follow in the season ahead with a scintillating display against their Serie A opponents yesterday evening. Stevan Jovetic was handed his first start since joining from Fiorentina in the summer and was named in the first XI alongside the likes of Edin Dzeko, David Silva and Jesus Navas, while Javi Garcia and Joleon Lescott were afforded a chance to impress at centre-half in light of Matija Nastasic’s enforced absence.

Jovetic needed just three minutes to make an impact after teeing up Silva for the opener before full-backs Micah Richards and Aleksandar Kolarov added further strikes, with Jovetic once again claiming an assist for the latter’s goal. Edin Dzeko continued his strong form by bagging a brace – with Navas and Yaya Toure providing an assist apiece – to take his tally to four in the last three matches.

Pellegrini made five alterations after the break, swapping Jovetic for Alvaro Negredo at half-time, but his side failed to find the net again. Sergio Aguero was named on the bench after a recent injury but was an unused sub alongside the like of Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta.

Dzeko’s form and upturn in confidence is already clear under the new manager after an indifferent period with Roberto Mancini in charge. Pellegrini’s show of faith at the pre-match press conference will not only have been music to the Bosnian’s ears but will surely pique the interest of Fantasy managers, given his relatively budget-friendly appeal as a route into the City attack ahead of a kind run of opening fixtures:

“The future of Dzeko has been decided a long time ago. He’s a top striker and a starter and he will have a high level of performance like he did all the years he played in Germany. I have confidence in him and the players who came in are only support for a squad that needs to have every place doubled up with top players. So there is no problem with the future of Dzeko.”

Post-match, the City boss called for his side to improve defensively after they almost let slip a five-goal lead against Milan. City arrived at yesterday’s game having previously registered back-to-back clean sheets but Pellegrini seemed none-too-impressed with the resilience of what was, essentially, his second-choice back-four:

“It’s not normal that we can be beating Milan 5-0 after 30 minutes. But I didn’t like the last 15 minutes of the first half because I thought we relaxed before the end of the game and in football you can’t do that. It’s better that this happens now though rather than in the Premier League so we can sort out these things before it starts.”

Walsall 0 Aston Villa 5
Paul Lambert’s side hit five for the second successive match as they pick up pace ahead of the season kick-off. The Villa boss rolled out first-choice forwards Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann in the front three, while Antonio Luna continues to look assured of his role at left-back after being named in the starting XI once again. With the visitors two goals to the good at the break thanks to strikes from Fabian Delph and Agbonlahor, Lambert made seven alterations to his line-up though afforded his front three until the hour mark before subbing them off. This gave Benteke enough time to notch his fourth goal in the last couple of matches – courtesy of a Weimann assist – before Jack Grealish and Gary Gardner completed the scoring late on.

With 10 goals in the last couple of games – albeit against lower league opposition – Lambert praised his charges as they gear up for a double Gameweek 1 away to Arsenal and Chelsea. The Villa boss also rolled out an injury update on a couple of new boys, going on to say:

“We play a passing game and we’re getting better and better. We definitely have goals in us, that’s for sure. It’s important if you can spread the goals around the team too, which we did. It could have been more. We were very good. It was pleasing that we kept a clean sheet too. We were solid throughout. We looked really good. The good thing was we were pressing throughout the game. We are getting better and better. There are a few weeks to go and it’s all about that Arsenal game….Hopefully Aleksandar (Tonev) and Jores (Okore) will maybe train Friday and then we will see how they are for the game. They are two big players for us who will hopefully come back shortly. Next up is Shamrock Rovers. We want to get more minutes under the belts of the players and hopefully get no injuries. Then there’s one more after that.”

Prior to the game, summer signing Luna spoke of his determination to nail down the left-back role this term. The former Sevilla man – who was the only Villa player to be handed the full 90 minutes last night – also started the previous match against Crewe and continues to look a cut-price alternative to Matthew Lowton for those looking for a cheap route the Villa defence, with a Sky Sports price of 4.0, compared to Lowton’s 5.7, particularly appealing:

“I feel I have the characteristics to play here. I think I have good athletic abilities – I am quick as a player and that is important in a division like the Premier League. But I believe it’s good for me. Training has helped massively too, it is very intense and great fun. All the ball work is intense but it’s really, really enjoyable. It’s so, so fun. Football here in England is very quick, very rapid. It’s a complicated league. For my own view, regarding my skills, it’s great that this league is fast. I still need to adapt to things, of course, and feel I am all the time.”

Juventus 1 Everton 1 (5-6 pens)
Roberto Martinez started with a 3-4-3 system for the first time this summer as the Toffees edged out the Serie A champions on spot-kicks. Leighton Baines recovered from a slight knock to take his place on the left of midfield, with Seamus Coleman fielded on the right and Marouane Fellaini and Darron Gibson in the centre. Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar once again got the nod for the flank roles in the front three, though Martinez handed Victor Anichebe the chance to lead the line, having afforded Arouna Kone and Nikica Jelavic 45 minutes apiece in the weekend win at Blackburn. Mirallas – yet again – was Everton’s goal hero and continues to flourish in his new position, having scored for the third match in a row.

After the game, though, it was youngster John Stones who Martinez singled out. With Antolin Alcaraz omitted from the tour due to a hamstring injury, Stones was fielded in the back-three alongside Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin and impressed throughout, heading against the post earlier on before coolly converting a chipped sudden-death spot-kick in an assured performance:

“I knew he was going to do it because the last three he has taken in training he has done that. The question was could he do it after Andrea Pirlo and at his age. It was incredible and I thought it was an example of his performance. He was composed throughout and it was a very useful game for himself and (he could be) a very important ‘new’ player for us going forward.”

would bale leaving mean EVERYONE has rvp?
yep there would be plenty more money to do so but surely rvp is being ignored by some for a reason. bale leaving doesn't change rvp's fixtures (how many times would you captain him early on?), similarly bale leaving doesn't change tottenham's fixtures. it could turn out soldado is tottenham's main source of points for 4.5mil* cheaper than van persie, with the jucier fixtures for sure, even the toughest early one of the north london derby is historicly very fruitful for attacking players.

essentially i'm arguing that the reason some don't have rvp is more than purely a money reason. of course his ownership will go up if bale leaves but i'm not sure it means it's an obvious move. upgrading 2 to 3 more punty 6-7mil picks to more banker 9mil picks could make more sense

*i'm predicting 9.5, yep he's arguably better than negredo but there could be some top2 club infaltion which elevated negredo's price slightly which wouldn't apply to soldado.

      Short answer: no
      I mentioned this earlier
The players i think are most important to have are (assuming Bale goes)

      Hazard
      Coutinho
      Silva
      Walcott
      RVP
      Soldado

Not having RVP makes it easier to get the rest of those players into your team and so it might be worth not having him.

Risk free with RVP. Try getting him when he's 14.1 or higher. Might as well be 14.5 then

          GJ/Mert (Pieters/Murner/Aaylor)

          Haz/Silva/Mirallas (Jarvis/Kim)

          RVP/Giroud/JRod

of course, of course. a player will always be less likely to score well in easier fixtures though, one of rvp's biggest strengths is he can score v anyone, like any striker though the killer scores (hattricks etc) are infinitely more likely in easier matches

      No RvP for me.

Am considering taking Rooney or even Kagaw instead. The fact that our early fixtures are so poor gives us an aid in some ways as it gives us an idea of hw Moyes is setting up, who looks nailed on and who looks dangerous. We can then make a call in GW4.

From GW2 Uniteds fixtures are -

CHE liv CPL mci WBA sun SOT STO

Id happily captain him 6/8 there

      Only times i wouldnt -
GW 3 City have HUL so either Silva or Dzeko
GW 5 Arsenal have STO which i'll captain Walcott

I dunno, I thought about it, but I may not have RVP.

      Look at this draft:

      Mignolet, Harper
      Cole, Luiz, Coleman, Parr, Turner
      Walcott, Hazard, Silva, Coutinho, Thomas
      Soldado (9.5), Dzeko, Rodriguez

If he was the same price as Bale then it'd just be a case of downgrading a midfield slot and upgrading a forward - but he's a whole 2m more. Having Bale weakens your team, so even if you ship him out then having RVP weakens it more. I'm still going to go without.

Adam West's point about captaincy is the best argument for getting him, but Wally, Soldado, and arguably some City players are decent substitutes.

Wakey has it right - I'll wager you'll have more fun not having him. Sick of trying to find bargain 5-5.5m players to pad my squad out.

Plus there's the fact that without Bale you can still get three big hitters and RVP so going without him isn't nearly as necessary. Current draft has Silva, Walcott, Hazard as well.

I think the comparison to last year is reasonable. Players like Ivanovic and Hazard held their value over the blank GW.

I think one of the reasons might be that transfers that happen when a player is red-flagged have a smaller impact of price movements. So when a player is injured, you need more transfers for the price to drop. If the players price is at or below their starting price, then I think this might also be linked to a proportion of owners (something like 10%).

If I have got this right (and it's a big IF), then it will need 20% of hazard owners to offload before he drops by 0.1 in price. To drop by the full 0.3m in GW3, this would need something in the region of half of his owners to sell him and I hardly think it likely that some many would do this simply because Hazard is missing one match.

Something odd is going on. There was definitely a sound for this one, and also for the Khawaja mistake (in addition to the bat hitting the pad). But on the side angle both sounds were after the ball had passed the bat. Good job Erasmus wasn't fooled for this one.

  22. Rooney and Soldado Video Analysis
    Brutus619
    • 13 Years
    11 years, 3 months ago

Following on from my series of video player analysis, so far including Carrick (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/30/friendlies-round-up-monday/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_5130830), Van Ginkel & Bony (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/30/friendlies-round-up-monday/?hc_page=9#hc_comment_5132117), I thought I would introduce a theme to my posts and for now that will be the “surprise package”. These are players I feel will rise above expectation and have a step up in their season long performance.

    ****Wayne Rooney****

Rooney has had many people question his ability due to his performance last season, with many doubting his entitlement to a world class label and his ability to perform both as a striker and also as a top drawer footballer in a more general sense. It should be kept in mind however, that Rooney has only broken the 20 goal barrier twice in his career but has consistently beaten the 20 goals + assist threshold (four seasons in a row & 6 out of his 7 seasons in the PL). Last season was no exception and with less minutes played than all of his previous seasons he still managed to serve us with 12 goals and 10 assists. No laughable tally for a player supposedly on the Wayne.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr3wa-o0mc0

    A. 00:15 to 00:24 (Classy back heel assist)

    B. 00:40 to 00:51 (Solid crosses leading to goals)

    C. 01:34 to 01:47 (Supplying RVP from a slightly more withdrawn role)

    D. 02:06 to 02:16 (Fantastic long range pass to RVP)

    E. 02:30 to 02:41 (Integral to build up play in final third)

    F. 03:21 to 03:27 (Another example of his crossing ability leading directly to an assist)

    G. 03:28 to 03:34 (More fantastic link up play with RVP)

    H. 03:46 to 03:55 (World class pass played with ease from deep into the feet of Valencia)

    I. 04:30 to 04:36 (Commitment to defensive duties)

    J. 05:03 to 05:14 (Great examples of his importance to United’s attacking movements from a withdrawn CF role)

    K. 05:24 to 05:31 (Absolutely ridiculous set up for what should have been a spectacular Paul Scholes volley)

    L. 05:35 to 05:45 (Again strong link up play with RVP)

    M. 05:54 to 06:20 (Architect to 2 of Kagawa’s 3 goals for the win against Norwich)

    N. 06:28 to 06:52 (THAT pass of the season that helped seal the PL for United against Villa)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjYlC6zBpnQ

    A. 00:15 to 00:25 (Sharing the defensive workload)

    B. 01:04 to 01:09 (Great cross onto RVP’s head)

    C. 01:51 to 02:05 (Good control whilst the ball was in the air before taking a quick shot on goal: sharpness/attacking instinct)

    D. 02:14 to 02:23 (Great link up play before tucking the ball away in typical striker fashion)

    E. 02:27 to 02:32 (Smart finish against City in the Manchester Derby, leaving Joe Hart left for dead)

    F. 02:37 to 02:42 (Another solid finish in the Manchester Derby)

    G. 02:48 to 03:01 (Another strong finish for a striker)

    H. 03:08 to 03:18 (And again)

    I. 03:20 to 03:38 (Fantastic finish from distance, can grab goals from a deeper attacking area)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJb_RfgR_ow

    A. 03:00 to 03:20 (Cheeky reminder of his class)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8LxaCIVDXU

    A. 01:53 to 02:00 (Ball played into near post rather than far post by Valencia, Rooney was also available & ready to tuck it away)

    B. 03:00 to 03:04 (Again ready to take on a shot at goal from a tasty position. That chance came down to a decision in the end which paid off for RVP. However, it is quite possible that Rooney could have stolen the headlines in this instance)

    C. 03:23 to 03:30 (Again in a fantastic goal scoring position only for the ball to travel to the feet of RVP. Unlucky here.)

    D. 04:44 to 04:48 (A better cross could have led to a direct effort on goal from close range)

So what can we glean from this visual presentation of Rooney’s season? Well what seems obvious is that Rooney is still very capable of getting the goals to match and beat other great – but lesser – goal scoring talents such as Defoe and Ba. But as well as having a reasonably strong season as a striker, Rooney has thrived in United’s attack from a more withdrawn position too. He has been integral to their build up play in the final third and is very often involved in the final few touches of the ball before a goal – much like David Silva in his breakthrough season at City. He thus is very much a world class CF who can take on a goal scoring responsibility whilst helping his team in their attacking endeavours even when behind the ball itself.

Furthermore, Rooney has shown flashes of brilliance in his link up play with RVP and there is the hope that his second season could see him thrive as the supply man to the lethal Dutchman whilst being a goal scoring talent in his own right. It should also be noted that RVP also had numerous instances in the season where he scored a goal Rooney could have scored if the ball dropped to him at the exact time it came to RVP or another player in the box, I was only able to find a few examples of this as it would be too arduous a task to sift through every other United player’s highlights.

Having already compared him to Silva, I do not think it would be completely unreasonable to compare him to Valencia or Navas in his crossing ability and he should be able to provide ammunition for goals both from set pieces and from drifting runs out wide. It should be noted that he should benefit from Vidic’s return to fitness as the Serbian has a tendency to capitalise from set piece goal scoring opportunities.

Without going on too much of a tangent I do personally believe that Moyes made a bit of a mess which was publicly misconstrued as him downplaying Rooney’s importance to the team. I feel as though Moyes, as any manager worth his salt would, recognised that RVP was United’s main outlet for goals whilst Rooney was the overall engine of the United attack who also could score goals and has the possibility to take on a greater goal scoring responsibility should RVP get injured.

Will he be in my team from GW 1? No (partly because of the DGW but also because of my plan to get RVP). Do I believe he could be in for a great season and make his price look generous come the end of the season? Of course, hopefully he doesn’t have injury problems like the last season.

It should also be worth pointing out that whilst a reasonable percentage or players see Aguero as one to keep an eye on, this out and out striker produced only 12 goals and 3 assists in comparison to Rooney’s 12 goals and 10 assists. Even Suarez only scored 11 goals and 6 assists in 2544 minutes (compared to 2014 for Rooney in the 2011/2012 season). For two players who many argue to have had disappointing seasons, Rooney certainly looks to be a safer and smarter choice as an FPL prospect when taking rotation and previous season performances into account.

Will he ever break the 20 goal barrier again at United? I personally do not believe he will, however, as long as he is not benched (come on, would Moyes really bench him for enough games to make him the new Dzeko?) Rooney will provide a potent source of goals and assists combined to serve up a tasty prospect at just £10.5m (he was even £11.8m when he ended the 2010/2011 season with 11 goals and 11 assists – stats which are comparable to the season that has just passed).

Finally, I feel he was on the cusp of challenging RVP last season. Even matched him in fpl points output when they played together. This season he may completely outshine RVP on value plus captaincy option combined due to that massive difference in price. captaining Rooney or Sturridge is a much more potent choice than RVP and Anelka! BAPS should also be taken into consideration, as I understand it, there is less emphasis on goal scoring and much more on overall team involvement. I feel Rooney would shine here as he is a strong passer (pass completion "PPI") and also is very involved defensively.

    ***Roberto Soldado***

With the official news this morning that Soldado has joined Spurs, I thought I would take a look at this prolific striker who has scored 88 league goals in 161 games for Getafe & Valencia combined (a scoring record that compares favourably with strikers such as Negredo getting 102 in 209 for Sevilla & Almeria, and Aguero with 74 in 175 for Atletico Madrid). He has come 6th, 5th, 6th & 4th in La Liga top scorers table in the last 4 seasons. A consistently strong record in a league which has been graced by the likes of Diego Forlan, Ronaldo, Messi, Higuain, Falcao, David Villa & Ibrahimovic.

    A. 01:40 to 01:50 (Pacey striker with a cool head in 1 v 1 situations)

    B. 02:21 to 02:35 (First time volley on the spin and under pressure, fantastic goal)

    C. 03:09 to 03:15 (Stunning volley)

    D. 03:44 to 03:52 (Another comfortable volley)

    E. 04:04 to 04:11 (Another quality finish, this time against Atletico)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLLu3h8CFPg

    F. 00:10 to 00:16 (Good finish from an angle)

    G. 00:22 to 00:32 (Great poacher's finish, separates him from other good poachers like Bent)

    H. 00:37 to 00:48 (Great diving header using his pace to get in that position, comparable to the quality of Chicarito right in front of goal)

    I. 01:08 to 01:17 (Classy finish)

    J. 01:38 to 01:44 (Brilliant effort from distance)

    K. 02:19 to 02:32 (Great header when under pressure)

    L. 02:36 to 02:46 (Incredible set up and volley from close range)

    M. 02:50 to 02:59 (Strong volley from an angle)

    N. 03:00 to 03:05 (Great control and classy chip)

    O. 03:50 to 04:00 (Great skill in tucking it away from a close range rebound off the keeper)

    P. 04:14 to 04:20 (Fantastic volley from an angle)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDraK6Hl6jc

    Q. 02:21 to 02:25 (Stunning finish whilst running into the box)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBHnymaOBe4

    R. 01:30 to 01:40 (GREAT poaching header from an angle)

    S. 01:41 to 01:54 (Setting himself up well before a great finish into top corner)

Well, after finishing this analysis I simply cannot contain my excitement. Watching these clips I was trying to come with a label for Soldado but I feel it would be a disservice to just give him one. Out of the numerous clips I did not include he showed excellent timing in his runs to score without pressure from the defence, really similiar in the way Chicarito capatilises on his own movement to score. However, Soldado also has great pace and uses it to great effect to leave defenders, combined with his excellent timing he goes above and beyond a player like Benteke as he really understands how to stay just onside before applying the finishing touch to a goal. Numerous clips I have seen showed him grabbing a goal where the defenders near him were behind him but he spotted an opposition full back out of place and allowing him to remain onside. The clips I have included show you he truly is a lethal finisher in addition to being an excellent poacher. A combination of RVP+Chicarito+Bent as a description of the type of player he is would be appropriate here (fantastic volleys and shots from angles + fantastic runs into the box to leave the defender clueless as he scores from close range + great positioning to score a tap in). Finally, it must be noted that Soldado is NOT a dribbling striker. He is not similiar to Aguero or Suarez in the way that they create their own chances and so he is very much just a lethal finisher who can occasionally set himself up for a great shot (not a bad thing at all!). In a team like Spurs he should thrive of the supply given to him and I feel he will be a significant upgrade to Defoe. In terms of value I see him rivaling Aguero in his breakthrough season by scoring at least a return of 16 goals when being modest (with a lower price tag expected - around the £9m mark).

At the moment my plan is to look at Cisse & Wanyama + Lovren next. Trying something different by trying to see how Southampton's defensive solidity will improve via their new signings.

Yeah I realise now I should have made 2 separate posts for Rooney & Soldado. But wasn't sure if I would get 2 "hot topics" together as I wanted to share this with as many people as possible. Similiar to my Van Ginkel + Bony post.

Bloody hell guys, forgot there was one other crucial bit of analysis I really wanted to make clear. Everyone's wary of new talent because of the physical nature of the PL. From the clips I went through I couldn't tell how strong Soldado is but he WILL thrive imo simply because he has such great positioning and makes fantastic runs into the box. Players like Chicarito, Michu & Bent don't really rely on their physicality to score goals. I feel Soldado will thrive as he is in this bracket.
