Moving Target

Moving Target – Scott Sinclair

West Brom boss Steve Clarke boosted his options on the flanks towards the end of last week by acquiring Scott Sinclair from Manchester City on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. Having previously been coached by Clarke during his five-year spell at Chelsea, the winger revealed the pair’s history played a major part in his decision to move to the midlands:

“I like the style of football Albion play and that’s why I chose to come here and play for Steve Clarke. I know him previously from my Chelsea days and I’m excited to be playing for him again. I sat down with my family and Steve Clarke being at West Brom helped us make the decision when we were discussing where the best place for me to come was at this point of my career. I’ve spoken to Steve throughout, we know each other well, and there isn’t a better place for me to come than here. Albion play good football and it’s great for me to come into this side.”

The History

Sinclair’s career began as a 15-year-old with Bristol City, where he became the club’s second-youngest ever first-team debutant back in late 2004. After making a couple of league appearances, he was snapped up by Chelsea the following summer but, despite his early promise, the winger found himself out of favour and made a mere five appearances for the west London club.

Indeed, much of Sinclair’s game time arrived via loan spells, with the Blues farming him out to a number of lower league clubs. Stints at Plymouth, QPR, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Wigan produced a total of six goals and four assists over 65 appearances before Swansea splashed out £500,000 for his services in the summer of 2010.

Finally guaranteed first-team football, the winger’s time at the Liberty proved a huge success. Handed spot-kick duties for the Welsh outfit, Sinclair racked up 22 goals and three assists in 46 appearances as he helped his new club clinch promotion to the Premier League via a play-off win over Reading.

The wide man’s first year in the top-flight brought him onto Fantasy radars, with eight goals and five assists for the Swans but after scoring in Gameweek 1 against QPR last season, Sinclair’s decision to up depart the Liberty for City ended his Fantasy prospects for 2012/13. Handed nine brief sub appearances and two starts under Roberto Mancini, he failed to find the net once in a hugely disappointing spell.

The Prospects

The move looks a perfect solution for all parties concerned, with Sinclair clearly a peripheral figure in Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team shake-up for the season ahead. Clarke, on the other hand, is desperate to inject some new blood into his side and is keen to help get the winger’s career back on track after a disappointing time at the Etihad:

“Scott understands he needs to play football and it will be good to work with him again. We’re delighted he feels this is the right club for him at this stage of his career. He is the type of player we were missing from the squad. He is a pure winger, who is quick, direct and scores goals – he has proven that over his career. He can play off the right or left and improves our attacking options.”

Much will depend on Clarke’s preferred formation as to how we assess Sinclair’s potential. So far this term, the Baggies boss has rolled out a 4-4-2 with James Morrison and Graham Dorrans handed the wide roles – if West Brom persist with this shape, Sinclair would also be vying for game time along with Chris Brunt for a role on the wing. Alternatively, Clarke may return to last term’s 4-2-3-1 and shift Morrison back into a central berth behind a lone forward, lessening the competition out wide. In addition, the midlands outfit also lined up in a 4-3-3 in one or two pre-season friendlies – potentially affording Sinclair a role in a front three.

Bearing in mind his side have yet to score over the first two Gameweeks, Clarke looks likely to freshen up his options ahead of the weekend home game with Swansea, perhaps handing Sinclair a debut against his old club. Listed in the mid-price bracket across the Fantasy games – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – Sinclair’s appeal would certainly be boosted if he’s afforded a share of set-pieces, while his impressive spot-kick conversion record may also persuade Clarke to hand him penalty duties.

While the short-term fixtures look decent (SWA, ful, SUN), Clarke’s side then face United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the following six – a schedule hardly conducive to Fantasy investment. With cheaper midfield alternatives such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham, Hull’s Robbie Brady or Everton youngster Ross Barkley not only far kinder on the budget but quick to pick up the attacking points, Sinclair is perhaps one to monitor until the Baggies’ agenda takes a turn for the better around the Gameweek 10 mark.

    Shameless repost

My natural tinkering inclinations usually lead me to taking a 4 point hit. This week though, I wouldn't mind hanging on to Ivanovic and Lampard. Is this sane? And if it is, is this a good lineup? (Only switch made is Anelka to Bent)

    GK: Mignolet
    DF: Coleman, Zabaleta, Clyne, Garrido
    MF: Walcott, Silva, Mirallas
    FW: Giroud, Soldado, Bent

    S: Davis, Kim, Lampard, Ivanovic

      Good strategy,

I am going for something similar but with rvp, 1 mid priced striker, 1 cheap

As soon as the big hitting mids start hitting goals (which is inevitable), this whole defender BP theory gets blown to smitherines. By which point, you would have completely ruined your squad.

Hi all - just my twopence worth :
There were three 0-0 games in this gameweek

    Everton 0 - 0 WBA
    Baines 3 , jagielka 3 , Foster 3 , Jones 3.

    Newcastle 0 - 0 West Ham
    Colocinni 3 , Santon 3 , Collins 1.

    Man Utd 0 - 0 Chelsea
    Vidic 3 , Ferdinand 2 , Evra 2 , Cahill 2 , Terry 2 , Cole 2.

    A few observations :
    - The Baps system is a different animal this year.
    - Defenders have become more valuable with a clean sheet.
    - anything from 3-6 (so far) players can be rewarded
    - the old 3/2/1 system is dead , 3points and 2points rewards are easily shared

There will be more points on offer this year for Baps and warrants attention and should be part of your strategy.
I for one am a little unhappy with the allocation , I think 3-2-1 was better ,
But it's the same rules for all and I feel WE need to adapt and quickly.

So from this I've developed this Theory :
We cannot afford Rvp as at the moment a decent pairing of Soldado / Sturridge / Bentekke / Dzecko / lambert will equal Rvps returns and also allows you to have say Terry / Zaba / Ferd / walker etc in your team as with rvp your also looking at a case of an uber cheap defence . I have Rvp but first chances comes I'm out , I want to spread the cash on my defenders , In the past IMO - your defence just wasn't worth it . My Strategy / Rvp dilemma sorted.

Any other thoughts or theories ?

        IMO - Benteke is essential.
        - Studge till Suarez returns
        - Giroud
        - Aguero
        - Soldado
        In that order

So when RVP is at home to Palace in GW4, who are you going to captain? The problem is you need Utd cover, and unless Rooney becomes genuinely viable, you'll be watching each game from behind the sofa without RVP.

I will have Rvp for that game.
I personally have been in a major dilemma all season to go with / without Rvp ,
I brought him in wk 2 cause I was afraid but now after some research I'm going without soonish ...
IMO the cumulative score of other strikers (as listed) will far outweigh rvp and allow you to chase the defensive cs / Baps.
I don't think Rooney is an option.

I think we need to wait until the midfielders start scoring properly before we make any judgements about where all the bonus points will be going.

It isn't reasonable to think the midfielders won't be scoring goals this year. The goalscoring in these first two weeks has been a weird anomaly; just one possible but unlikely roll of the dice.

My thought is that 0-0s and 1-0s have been much more frequent than usual. This means while you're correct, the effect will be less than you think by extrapolating 2gws results. Big teams will often score a few and I don't think defenders will do well in 3-0 or 4-0 wins, nor will bonus be shared when more goals and assists are on the board.

So no, don't start a revolution just yet but I am prepared to eat my words. PS captain rvp gw4!

Things don't get any better bapswise for midfielders at 3 or 4-0 though, unless they're scoring the goals.

There will be games where defenders do well and games where forwards do well, but there are very few plausible scenarios where a non-scoring mid can come out of a game with baps.

Every time Silva makes an assist to a striker he is giving himself -5bps compared to that striker.

As it's such a hot topic...and if it helps...I was about the only regular poster last year who had a defence heavy team.....Vert/Kompany/Verm (all season) and even Baines for a while on top...Even without the favourable BAPS and in an RVPless team (again all season) i averaged 54 pts per GW...not bad....The new BAP system could easily push that average well up to a more respectable GW average..Just thought i'd throw in a bench mark...

early season defending. watch when team start scoring this theory goes out the window. So far you are right, but you had three 0-0 matches last week alone. Wait till the goals start flowing and we will be back to similar BPS allocation as last year.

Also, keep in mind that when a match finishes 0-0 under the new BPS system pretty much all the defenders get rewarded, but how often will that happen?!

Yes they will , all saying is the bigger teams are more likely to get cs and if a game finishes say 1-0 / 2-0 there's every chance the Terry's of this world will get Baps.

What do you guys think about getting Vidic in for GW4?

Utd's fixtures are very good from GW4-12 (except for City in GW5 and Arsenal in GW11).

Utd seem solid at the back and Vidic seems like the player that will get the maximum bonus when Utd keep a clean sheet.

    Lads

Some advice please on this dilemma

I can afford rooney or kun from GW 4 onwards as RVP would ruin my squad depth.

If you had to pick roon and kunas a long term which 1 and why ?

    thanks in advance

Myhill when fit again and apparently back in training this week. You might get one week out of Daniels.

Can someone explain how TotalFPL's price change table works? Am I right in saying that if a player is over 100% on 'Progress' they will rise in price at the next update?

Yes...but both price checking sites (fiso/Totalfpl) are having a spot of trouble getting it right so far this season...Just use it as a guide for now and not cast in stone.

Maybe he won't become a starter, Jol in big trouble trying to balance out Berba, Bent, Ruiz and Taraabt... and the rest of their attacking mids.

Someone must be given the bench role, Taraabt was good vs arsenal and i doubt he will be benched, Berba can't be benched, so i guess they will start simillarly to the arsenal match.

Ranked 340k overall, but averaging 65 pts per game week and no urge to wildcard at all. If this was a long distance race, I'd be sat in comfortably behind the leading pack ready to make a move!

    Cech Boruc
    Coleman Toure Chester Mbiwa Shaw
    Wally Silva Miralas Jorrison Lallana
    Soldado Benteke Dzeko

    1.9m in the bank

Thoughts? Have brought in Silva for Hazard this week to give me an escape plan for Dzeko while keeping Citeh attacking threat, and need James Morrison and West Brom generally, to start getting their act together. Cech to go for someone like Vorm is on the radar too.

Keeping an eye on how well defenders are scoring. Could be a viable tactic to go big at the back.

That's it really! Sitting content for the first time in god knows how many starts.

Agreed, long race and sitting comfortably right now. I still believe that the more expensive mids will bring returns this season. Keep an eye on some expensive defenders but there's always a cheaper route, I'm looking at Dawson at Spurs. 5 mil, pretty handy if he keeps getting minutes.

Sigh. People need to chill about this whole ultra cheap mids and very expensive defence lark. It's extremely early days. I know that the BP system is more favourable towards defenders who keep a CS but it's been 2 weeks, it's not definitive that every week will have so many cleanies. Oh and cheap defenders can still work, if I had picked my team a little smarter I would have had 4 CSs from 2 4.5s, 1 4.0 and Mig.

ok lads, with this Foster news I'd love to draft Michu in, but I'm left with a choice of him or Tekkers. and I think I'd rather have the latter.

So I have 8.3 to spend on downgrading Hazard, I have come up with, having been caught out by Lukaku's first price drop

    Paulinho
    Townsend
    Henderson
    Barfa

so, it's one of them and Tekkers or

    Michu and Bent

    boruc (Cech)
    Turner Toure Mert Collins (Parr)
    Silva Snod Kim Morrison (Hazard)
    RVP Lambert (Bentekkers)

Should I just bite the bullet and Wildcard?

or is there a transfer I can make to make up for the blank...Benteke out, Sturridge in? But then I'm still left with a v weak midfield...
