The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's illuminating! People so casually captain the same player every gw, and have a standard team yet are so high up. I struggle, and go through the whole tortuous decision making process and manage about 90 points behind them in total. I think...where did they go so right and I went to wrong..

Some people are in denial saying the new BP system doesn't favour defenders. Yes, there have been more clean sheets, but take this fact as an example:

Sturridge has scored the winner and only goal in every game. He's never had 3bp. In week 1 he got none, always outscored by defenders.

In seasons gone by, he'd have got 3 everytime.

And it isn't just 1-0s. Defenders got bonus in 2-0s and even in 4-0s.

Defenders in the 2nd and 3rd Liverpool games provided the assist and kept a clean sheet. This won't happen every time the striker scores. In the first game Mignolet saved a penalty, they kept a clean sheet and Sturridge was quite wasteful.

It's slightly more skewed towards defenders but it's not worth restructuring to a 4-3-3 before we see how midfielders scoring affects bonus distribution.

Precisely. Which is why you should spend more on your midfield. A combo of a 6.5m mid and a 5m defender will probably outscore a 5m mid and a 6.5m defender.

Yep it's definitely bringing a different dynamic into the game... but I'm not convinced it will continue in the same vain... we saw it last year where teams were struggling to keep CS all over the place, I can't accept that now the reverse is true just yet... I need a few more weeks until I decide to pump another 2-3m into my backline...

Just an addition, with the exception of Chelsea's 2-0 win over Hull (where Cole, Terry and Cahill all got 2BPs), no defender has received more than 1 BP without an attacking return in any game that finished higher than 1-0...

Yep, this is why I'm seriously considering the 4-3-3. In the past I think a midfielder assist + clean sheet was about equal to, if not better than a defender clean sheet. Now it's looking like it's not. Lamela/Lampard are another two names in midfield who I feel can benefit.

          yes

the main message of the new system is assists have been devalued
(although I'm curious if getting 2 or more assists in a game will get some bonus - haven't really had occasion to see that yet in the low scoring start to the season)

with assists devalued, players that got a lot of points previously on assists are devalued (Coutinho) and being the main person on the team that takes corners is devalued (Mata)

midfield options are narrowed, but not gone

Even if they score, they get 6bps iirc, but when a forward scores, he gets 8bps. In order to get the bp the mid needs to score more goals in the match or the only goal of the match. This isn't even taking into account a CS for the defenders. Mids have been given a shit deal imo.

            Three reasons:

            1) My league hated my guts and kept changing the rules to keep me from winning again, and yet I did.

            2) I told other people I know this, and no one else wants me in their league.

            3) I was insanely obsessive, my wife didn't think the money I won was worth it, and I like my marriage.

    sins of fantasy sports

Being a homer - maxing out on players from your favorite team without regard to their fantasy prospects

Buying looks - getting players in that you "like the look of" without regard to their fantasy prospects

Impatience - chasing who scored fantasy points last week instead of trying to get who will score more the next few weeks

    what else?

      1. I always get more players from my favorite team.

      2. I always buy good looking players (just did Altidore out, Giroud in - he's way better looking)

      3. The past is certain and the future is uncertain, so I always take players that scored well last week.

Hmm.... maybe this is why my team is doing worse and worse.

To do dzeko to benteke I need to find 0.7.

    Scez boruc
    Coleman toure zaba Chester MTurner
    Hazard Walcott mirralas paulinho Kim
    Soldado sturridge dzeko

Who would you sell and for who?

Looks like a lot of last minute transfers in the pipeline, who are the current fantasy players in danger of warming the bench?

    Who will Ozil replace
    The new palace winger
    etc etc

Could be some major upset in the next twenty four hours

It not often two sides as big as Arsenal and United are so desperate, plus Bale has freed up millions

Is there anyone who is wild-carding and not putting Bentenke in their team? Why?

perfect, but I can't understand why except for

RVP plus the last two goals seen before the int'l break

(since I'm sure we all know that players who scored goals in 3 consecutive games are, in reality, less likely to score again in their next game)

          I really don't know. I like Archie's post on this matter: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/09/01/the-knee-jerk-sunday-2/?hc_page=22#hc_comment_5455744

I like Benteke more because I'd be more likely to captain him throughout the year.

I feel that's a very undervalued aspect to a players worth.

I would rarely, if ever, feel confident in handing Giroud the armband.

i doubt collins will rise 0.2, but if you like WHU defense, you won't mind

why lamela? just a good feeling? I can't make heads/tails of tottenham... I figure it will be November before I buy back in (about to trade in Soldado; i'm not convinced)
