Moving Target

Moving Target – Bacary Sagna

Manchester City kick-started a summer of restructuring last month by confirming the acquisition of Bacary Sagna from Arsenal on a three-year deal. After failing to agree an improved contract with the Gunners, the 31-year-old will arrive at the Etihad as a free agent and follows in the footsteps of Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri in swapping north London for the blue half of Manchester:

The History

A product of the FC Sens and Auxerre youth academies, Sagna made his debut for the latter back in the 2004-05 campaign. Over the course of three seasons, the right-back made 104 appearances and provided four assists for the Ligue 1 club – voted Auxerre Player of the Year in 2006-07, his displays persuaded Arsene Wenger to fork out £7m for his services in July 2007.

The Frenchman lasted seven years at the Emirates and with little competition for a first-team place, made 284 Premier League appearances for the north London outfit. Sagna’s raids down the right served up five goals and 27 assists and saw him named in the PFA Player of the Year XI on two occasions – 2007-08 and 2010-11 – though his only piece of silverware arrived just last May, when Arsenal defeated Hull City to lift the FA Cup.

On the international stage, Sagna made his debut back in 2007 and has subsequently turned out for his country on 40 occasions, though his fallen down the pecking order in recent times and remains second choice right-back behind Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy.

The Prospects

With a first full season at the helm now behind him, Pellegrini is clearly intent on replenishing his options at the back. Already this summer, Costel Pantilimon has moved to Sunderland, Joleon Lescott has joined West Brom, whilst Micah Richards is also set to leave the club under freedom of contract after failing to convince the Chilean he was worthy of a place in the first-team squad.

Sagna’s arrival affords City a proven Premier League player, who is also capable of filling in at centre-half if the need arises. While that may be all good and well for Pellegrini, from a Fantasy perspective it looks to have killed the prospects of both Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta for the season ahead. With Richards either struggling with injury or out of form, the Argentine was named in the first XI in 34 of City’s league matches last term – Sagna was similarly nailed-on at Arsenal, also starting 34 times, and it looks like his acquisition will merely allow Pellegrini the chance to rotate the spot with far more regularity. Indeed, one look at the City left-back berth, where Clichy made 21 starts and Aleksandar Kolarov managed 18, is perhaps indicative as to what we can expect.

With Martin Demichelis approaching 34 years of age and Matija Nastasic plagued with a back problem, it looks likely that Vincent Kompany will be the one City defender we can rely upon unless Pellegrini strengthens further. At the Emirates, though, Wenger tends to rarely rotate his defence – a potential move for Debuchy would bring him immediately onto our radars, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker remain strong routes into a backline that conceded just 11 times at home last term.

The recently-released Premier League fixture list has handed Pellegrini a tricky opening few fixtures. Showdowns with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in the first five Gameweeks suggest that many will steer clear of their defensive assets from the off but even when the schedule clears, Sagna and Zabaleta – with 133 points and 146 points in last term’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game respectively – both look set to be crossed off our Fantasy radars unless injuries allow one of the duo to nail down a regular role.

I think that £32 was about his buy out clause (€40M).

I have no idea why City wants to pay that much. Was there competition for him? Doubt there was that much of it at least.

On the other hand, City had that "can use €60M, but just for one player" transfer ban on them too, so that explains some of it, but I think they were going to pay that whole buy out clause anyway.

I think he's way overhyped because of that pricing, and you too are overrating him. Well, we'll see how well it goes. He might actually work out very well with Kompany, in the end, so maybe he is a complementary signing. like Fernandinho (not very good individually) for YaYa.

No one will read this I know, but to the odd geek who is interested (I posted this elsewhere by accident)

Regarding the 750 million United deal with Adidas, something in these numbers doesn't add up...

Liverpool's Warrior deal is £25m per annum if I remember correctly, over 6 years - total £150m. At the time the deal was struck it was considered to be huge, and was rated by most as very good work by the commercial team at LFC.

At the time of the deal, there was a news story with some spin from Ian Ayre, saying how Liverpool "stand to make £300m" from the deal - due to increased earning possibilities for the club arising out of new terms.

Basically, Ayre was saying that if the club's total income from clothing and similar merchandise amounted to 100%, then "football kit" was 50% of the total value and the remainder came from LFC-branded "other clothing" like t-shirts, jackets, hats and whatever.

Adidas had previously owned the rights to sell ALL LFC branded clothing as part of their deal. So, Liverpool were dependent on them doing a good job with the "other clothing" aspect of it.

Now, under the terms of the new deal, Warrior were paying a higher amount than Adidas had, but were only receiving the rights to merchandise "football kit" (including training gear). Liverpool FC themselves retained the rights to sell other LFC-branded clothing. If they do their job properly, you would imagine that they could earn higher profit on each item of "other" clothing now since they wouldn't have to let Adidas take a cut.

Ayre was saying that, assuming they get their act together, they could expect to earn another £150m from the club's direct sales of other clothing.

The newspaper then ran with a headline "Liverpool stand to make £300m from new Warrior deal" or something like that. However, if you read the quotes it is clear that only half of that amount is actually coming from Warrior, with the club having the opportunity to earn the other half itself based on Ayre's projections for clothing sales.

Now, reading the headlines and stories that have come out so far about United, it LOOKS like their £750/10yrs or £75m per season is all coming directly from Adidas. Assuming that is accurate, you would have to consider that they most likely have sold the rights to ALL club-branded clothing as well (similar to LFC's old terms with Adidas).

If you assume that the split of "kit" vs. "other" clothing at United is the same as at Liverpool - i.e. 50-50 - then you could say that the comparable value of United's new Adidas deal is more like £37.5m per season (i.e. 50% of £75m).

Still a great contract for them, and better than LFC's, but it doesn't quite dwarf other deals in the way that the headline figures make it look.

This above is a lot of guesswork on my part, perhaps some other member with inside knowledge could comment on whether it's accurate?

The source for the detail on LFC's own contract is this old news story from the Guardian:

Unbelievable amounts of money surround the merchandising part of footy. I remember watching a financial bod from Real Madrid saying they they stood to make 250 mill on the Ronaldo deal when all commercial activities were added up....astonishing...

united were earning 80 mill a year on just club merch back in 2010 though. so if this deal included that stuff too we would be looking at even bigger figures

Unfortunately I can't say any real specifics but absolutely everything I have read has identified the deal as solely for kits and shirts and nothing about other merchandise such as club branded clothing. The reasoning behind such a huge price is really to do with United's global position and marketing, especially in areas like Asia. Interesting conjecture but I feel if this was the case then every publication wouldn't be comparing it to kit deals of other clubs instead of kit+other earnings.

So the email would be useless?
Pretending not to know works in this case.

this susprised me slightly considering suarez scored about 300 goals.
bps: suarez 40, rooney 38. rooney played quite a bit less too

No. Suarez was actually a very untidy player, and never picked up bonus unless he scored.

In fact, can you name any forwards that got bps without scoring?

This system maybe helps us identify the quality of defenders, but not forwards

In fact, Sturridge contributes hugely towards the team, as demonstrated by my tables last year.

Not a member so no idea what your tables tables include but we'll see just how important Suarez was this season.

sturridge and Gerrard constantly getting big points didn't help. In rooney's case, there was no one to share points with

Rooney plays like a mid and gets points in other ways.
He didn't have much competition from his teammates either.
