The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game has already sparked the emergence of the so-called “template team”, with squads made up of a small pool of favoured targets. This has prompted a raft of discussions in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as many search for that little bit of flair to help smash the template. Bonus points, as well as rotation strategies, were also the focus of much chatter and we look back on all these discussions, whilst also bringing up to date with the community leagues on offer:

The Community Articles

There’s little doubt that Billy Gilmore’s detailed look at the tweaked FPL Bonus Point System was amongst the most popular articles posted over the past seven days. In his extraordinary analysis, Billy takes a sample of games from last season to show how the revised BPS would have influenced the bonus point allocation. The results will certainly prove happy reading for those looking to invest in full backs and wingers.

Another issue vexing our community writers this week has been the abundance of choice in the game, with the major teams investing in a raft of new, potentially high scoring, players. The Puntmaster was on hand with an update of his new Premier League player analysis while Parm took a closer look at some key dilemmas such as the dilemma presented by the Arsenal midfield, now bolstered by the significance presence of Alexis Sanchez.

Rotation continues to come under the spotlight among our community scribes, with The Sarjeant being the latest to assess whether home and away rotation or focusing on fixture strength is the best policy for the season ahead. Another slab of essential pre-season reading.

The Hottest Topics

Each year, shortly after the launch of the FPL game, a similar pattern emerges; teams are drafted, template squads emerge and the urgent call for individualism selections turns from a whisper to a full blown battle cry.

Among those calling for the early template to be broken was Portsmouth Bubblejet via this cautionary post warning against following the herd and sticking up for our most maverick of Fantasy managers. Courtois in the Rye was another calling for Fantasy managers to go against the grain with his look at just why the consensus squad is doomed to fail.

Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly a template favourite that’s already commanded huge ownership across the Fantasy games. At the time of writing he was the most owned player in FPL so far. But, asks Cynical Steve, is he really worth his £10.5m price tag?

At the other end of the scale, Hull’s new midfield recruit, Robert Snodgrass, is a popular target for those adhering to the template. However, according to our man on the Humber Jaizinho, the former Norwich player has a long way to go to justify his selection. Going by his man in the stand account of Hull’s friendly game against North Ferriby this week, Curtis Davies is far more deserving of template status.

A Chelsea defender is another prime asset and already a popular route, thanks, in no small part, to an eye catching set of early fixtures and a strong record of clean sheets under manager Jose Mourinho. The template dissenters arguing against their inclusion include Il Gladiatore, who wonders whether the likes of John Terry are deserving of essential status. Meanwhile, Mr Anonymous questioned whether new full-back Filipe Luis is nailed on to start.

At the time of writing almost a third of those who have registered to play FPL had drafted in £11.5m priced Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, to cement his place in template forward lines. Irish Madrista took up the mantle of front line template buster this week, urging Fantasy managers to ignore expensive strikers and look to cheaper, lesser owned options such as Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud.

Promoted sides also offer the chance for Fantasy managers to take a punt. The Sarjeant returned to look at the three promoted sides’ clean sheet potential to put forward a good case for investing in QPR defenders as part of a home and away rotation strategy. He also took time to look at the potential hot prospects up top offered up by the promoted sides.

I even found myself, a renowned “Dullard” when it comes to squad selection, scanning the player list for alternatives to help break from the early favourite targets. My hot topic looked at creating a team focusing mainly on players from the ranks of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. This strict focus on title contenders becomes a differential in itself, with few Fantasy managers attempting such a collection. As Innsie pointed out, though, such a tactic would dramatically reduce interest in Burnley v Hull fixture. We can’t possibly have that.

Whether your team can be described as “template” or “maverick”, the FPL does, of course, offer us all a chance to start the selection process all over again thanks to the Wildcard. In our discussion on the best time to use the wildcard Fantasy Genius and Billy Gilmore revealed they plan to lay it down during the first international break of the season at the Gameweek 4 stage – a popular window. However, Moin is determined to cling on to it and use it after January to take advantage of the incoming double Gameweeks.

The Community Tournaments

Not surprisingly, we’re seeing a whole host of community leagues crop up as we head into August. Be sure to drop us a line at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you’ve got a league or tournament to plug.

First up this week, Keith Kiely is looking for community members to join his High Flighters FPL league (18100-24576). He is also running a H2H version (18100-90838). Meanwhile, Evilfuk has created a 2006 Veterans League (27-317) in FPL for those who have been playing the game since the 2006/7 season.

In addition, Thomass is running an FPL competition this season. For more details click here.

The more I spend time tinkering and looking at different player combinations the more I realize how few captaincy options there seem to be. As a moth drawn to flame, and foolish as it may be, I am starting to come back around on Aguero as he is coming into the season allegedly "fit".

With Suarez gone he is arguably the best goal scoring striker in the prem *when fit* and playing in a completely settled squad from last year, something that United and Liverpool cannot boast, making him also arguably one of the best captaincy options. I was badly burned by him last year and finished up with a strict no-Kun policy but I am now not so sure.

He will assuredly get injured when I have him captained somewhere between weeks 1-10 and give me a two for my captain that GW but it is just a simple downgrade or upgrade away from him to Sturr or RVP. Simples.

    Thoughts, DZ?

I am sort of hoping he just plays 65 quiet minutes and gets subbed off with no posts of "OMG was he limping to the sidelines????"

Staying away from Dzeko, myself. I understand the perceived value in him, just really hate the way he plays when Aguero is in there with him. If/when Aguero gets hurt, I will look at bringing Dzeko in.

Sir, this is one of the most overlooked aspects when evaluating a player.

"Points per Million" is very important & most heavy hitting forwards do pretty poorly when compared to their lesser priced peers, hence the "He's too expensive!" moniker.

We forget that players like Aguero or RVP are essentially worth double their PPM valuation as we can & do captain them most weeks...

Now, how many of these players can we own before it starts ruining the rest of our squad?

Personally, the RVP / Aguero home & away rotation always gets me at the start of each year...

    Sacriledge but:

I don't think Hazard is worth it

His points per game last season was a lot lower than i thought; the same as sterling. All the other big hitters like ramsey, mata were a lot higher.

Aguero had the best by far, I didn't even realise. He averaged 9 points per game last season if he had played 90 minutes.

Owning Hazard really bored me last year. Got him in after he dropped in value a bit, then rode that purple patch until his value was too high for me to justify selling him and then he was pretty crap for the last couple months excluding one 22 pointer against Newcastle if memory serves. Missed a couple games to boot. Gonna give him a rest at least from my squad from the start.

Some of Hazard's appeal is the fact that he grinds out those PPG each & every week.

No rotation. No injuries. Just a solid 190-200 pts per season...

He was shocking in the world cup, maybe he is in a regression phase for some reason.
Possible he will see more rotaion, some good alternatives at chalsea. Fabregas and Costa could well be point stealers in a big way

First, I put little to no stock in a player's FPL worth based on his WC performance.

Playing 5 games with 11 strangers, in a jungle or smog-ridden city half way around the world tells us little about a player's worth & why it is given so much credence is beyond me?

Following that, you're correct he could be rested more often this year however, with his underlying stats (great accuracy & conversion rates, coupled with exceptional amounts of chances created) I'm inclined to say he'll easily be able to follow up on his back-to-back 190+pt seasons with another shining effort.

He does not grind out points every week, he's actually very inconsistent. A handful of monster hauls made up most of his points, he actually had a lot of blanks last season.

Still, he finished with a lot of points both seasons so far. As long as he's fit keep him in and he should do you good overall. Can always downgrade to fab if he outshines him

I am starting to think that Costa is the way to go...at least for the opening fixtures. I don't like Hazard being hot or cold, and WC performance wasn't that impressive either...maybe will wait and see Hazard to get the form and then choose him. Any thoughts? I think Costa might well be the man bang goals in the opening game weeks...he's gonna be nailed on, unless Mou buys someone before season starts - which he said he won't do....

    2 questions..

    1. For TM or any of the regulars.. When are the mini leagues going to be up for this year?

Anyone started a league for 3rd year FPL players? 3rd times the charm, right?

    2. I saw some chatter earlier about Steven Naismith.. IF Everton doesn't sign any strikers.. He could really be a legitimate option.. Or do we expect him to split time with Kone?

May be nothing.. But it's fun splashing the extra cash with him in my team.

Hi guys! long time reader(stalker) first time poster here!
Very confused about whom to select from the many potential big hitters in mid and fwd so have gone with this team so that I have 2.0 in the bank which will allow me to upgrade in the 2nd week. Any suggestions?

    --------------------Bego---4.0----------------------
    Davies---Naylor---Chester---Reid---Upson
    Mata---Sanchez---Arnie---Delph---Taarabt
    -----------Rooney---Dzeko----Costa-----------

My reasoning is that De Jong, Tadic, Siggy have tough fixtures in the 1st week and after seeing there performance can upgrade one of Delph,Taarabt with the 2.0 in the bank.

dont fancy that you never know what other unforseen transefrs you will have to make due to injuries .As well as this it seems pointless having dead weights in your team who you are ineveitably gonna change anyways.... not all your players are gonna have gr8 fixtures every week you just gotta take the plunge at the beginnning ;p

Ward Delaney Dann absolutely nailed for us. Jerome Williams, an 18 year old with no prem experience, has been playing the first half with our starters this preseason US tour so far instead of Mariappa. If we open the season starting either of these two, I would be shocked, and I think TP will bring in a new fullback soon.

That's true but I've had lots of success rotating mid price attackers before. My def is cheap as chips anyway so still have Sanchez, Fab, Mata, Rooney, Dzeko, Bony in there. After gw4 I could downgrade Arn anyway if Sig is doing the biz

      I'm sure "Zamora" is a typo. 😕

I think 5 big mids is a little too excessive.

Put it this way, I'd rather have 3 premium forwards over 5 top notch mids. Forwards tend to score more and earn the bonus points.

Some players are play makers like Scholes, Xavi or Pirlo..who even inside the box would find a pass to the striker and some players just like to hit it and take chances..so I rate them in the latter bracket..

And if he moves to Newcastle? Is that the end of the De Jong Bandwagon?

BR says “It has to be the right type. If that means I have to wait until January then that’s what I will do,” he said. “In the midfield area and out wide we would still have a lot.

BR: "“Philippe Coutinho is the brain in our team - the continuity player. He might not score many goals, but he’s a wonderful reference for the team,” the Liverpool manager argued. “He is the one that gets this team ticking, gets the movement in front of the ball. He goes and gets on the ball. He’s a fantastic talent for such a young player and he’s still gaining his fitness, so he will only get better."

With Sterling/Markovic/Lallana/Ibe on the wings I think Coutinho is the one playing off Sturridge.
