Scout Notes – Gameweek 27 – Sunday

Arsenal strengthen their grasp on a top four spot thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Tomas Rosicky. Liverpool continue their rapid ascent up the Premier League table as Manchester City’s title charge hits a roadblock. Chelsea claim the first silverware of the season, while Everton struggle to stay afloat in Roberto Martinez’s toilsome sophomore season.

Gunners march on

Arsenal bounced back from their midweek defeat to Monaco in the Champions League with a 2-0 home victory over Everton, propelling them to within four points of Manchester City in 2nd place. The Gunners look well placed to capitalise on a favourable run of upcoming fixtures (qpr, WHU, new, LIV, bur, SUN) and further strengthen their hold on a Champions League berth.

Arsene Wenger made two changes from the side that faltered last Wednesday, drafting in Gabriel Paulista to replace Per Mertesacker in central defence and handing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a start over Danny Welbeck. The Frenchman’s decision to keep faith in Olivier Giroud – who spurned a raft of chances against Monaco – paid dividends, as the 28-year-old frontman recorded his fourth league goal in six outings. Tomas Rosicky replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 81st minute and made the most of his late second-half cameo, doubling the North London outfit’s lead in the just prior to the final whistle. Elsewhere, Mesut Ozil’s two assists means he has delivered attacking returns for the fourth match in five, whereas Alexis Sanchez has now failed to pick up the points for four successive league outings.

Theo Walcott remained rooted to the bench for the second week running and looks to have slipped further down the pecking order upon Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return from injury. Just two starts in Arsenal’s previous five league ties give us little confidence that Walcott will emerage as a viable route into their midfield any time soon.

In defence, Hector Bellerin (4.6) retained the right-back berth amid rotation concerns, as Arsenal registered their fourth clean sheet in seven league fixtures. The 19-year-old Spaniard was rewarded with three bonus points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), boosting his points per game average up to 4.1 – second only to the 6.0-priced Laurent Koscielny (6.0) in Arsenal’s rearguard.

Everton plummet to new depths

With both Crystal Palace and West Brom bagging three points this Gameweek, Everton dropped to 14th  and now sit just eight points off the relegation zone. Although the Toffees squad is still likely to stave off any threat of relegation, manager Roberto Martinez will be deeply concerned by their run of 11 matches with only one victory. Mercifully, the Merseysiders’ upcoming fixtures (sto, NEW, qpr, SOT, swa, BUR) provide ample opportunity for Everton to get their season back on track, yet they’ll need to get Romelu Lukaku – who’s only netted once in his previous 13 league appearances – firing again if they stand any chance of achieving that.

Martinez made three changes to the side that drew to Leicester City last time out, with Leighton Baines, Aaron Lennon and Steven Naismith making way for Luke Garbutt, Kevin Mirallas and Gareth Barry. Garbutt earned his second league start for Everton by virtue of Baines sustaining a quad injury in training on Friday – which, incidentally, is likely to keep him sidelined for their next match-up against Stoke City.

Liverpool’s streak continues

Liverpool extended their unbeaten league run to 11 matches following a 2-1 home victory over Manchester City. Philippe Coutinho was the standout player for the hosts, scoring the winning goal with a pacy, curling effort from outside the box – his second in as many outings for the Reds. Raheem Sterling also delivered attacking returns for the second week in succession, assisting both Coutinho’s and Jordan Henderson’s strikes. The latter notched his third goal of a campaign that’s shaping up to be his most productive in a Liverpool jersey – Henderson’s already matched his assist record (seven) for a season and is just two goals shy of his 2012/13 tally (five).

Wing-back Alberto Moreno came in for the injured Jordon Ibe in the only change enacted by Brendan Rodgers from the team that beat Southampton last Gameweek. Daniel Sturridge had to settle for a 15-minute spell in the latter stages of the match as Rodgers continues to ease the England international back into contention following his lengthy injury layoff.

City’s faltering title charge

Manchester City’s hopes of securing back-to-back titles were dealt a hammer blow on Sunday afternoon when they lost at Anfield. If Chelsea can secure the win against West Ham next Gameweek, they’ll be eight points clear of the champions with only 11 matches left to play.

Despite providing an exquisite through ball for Edin Dzeko’s first-half equaliser, Sergio Aguero didn’t match up to his customarily high standards, failing to force a save out of Simon Mignolet with any of his four attempts on goal. From a Fantasy standpoint, the Dzeko/Aguero strike partnership proved effective once again, with the pair combining for four assists and three goals in their last two league fixtures.

Manuel Pellegrini stuck with the same XI that breezed past Newcastle last Gameweek but was forced into a formation change at the hour mark to counter Liverpool’s midfield dominance – James Milner was subbed in for Edin Dzeko as they adopted a 4-2-3-1 set-up with Yaya Toure and Fernandinho sitting. Wilfried Bony’s arrival late on saw the Sky Blues revert to a 4-4-2 formation, but the Ivorian centre forward failed to make an impact during his brief spell on the pitch.

Chelsea triumphant as defence impresses

Chelsea secured their their fifth league cup trophy as they triumphed 2-0 over Tottenham in a largely incident-free final. In the absence of midfield stalwart Nemanja Matic, Blues boss Jose Mourinho fielded Kurt Zouma in a holding midfield role alongside Ramires. The ploy seemed to work, with Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen unable to find the pockets of space he usually thrives in. Whether Mourinho elects to employ the same tactic in midweek against West Ham – as Matic serves the second match of his ban – remains to be seen.

Diego Costa was back on the score sheet for Chelsea – having drawn a blank against Burnley and Paris Saint-Germain – with John Terry providing the other goal. Remarkably, the Blues’ rearguard (Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Kurt Zouma, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta) have now tallied 16 goals and 13 assists between them in the 2014/15 campaign, bringing into focus what an attacking threat they’ve been this term.

Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino handed Nacer Chadli and Andros Townsend starts ahead of Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela in Tottenham’s midfield – although neither winger offered much support for lone striker Harry Kane, who was isolated up front for the majority of the tie. With Spurs now facing a double Gameweek (SWA, qpr) that rounds off a period of four matches within 10 days, Pochettino will doubtless rotate his squad for the next round of Premier League fixtures.

    GW28 – Captain stat attack!

So after the matches at the weekend, coupled with not including Austin/Eriksen last time I thought I’d update my captain stats a little.

For me the choice is Kane and only Kane this week. Even if you are looking for differentials I think the potential Kane has for scoring is too risky to punt elsewhere.

One of the main arguments for Aguero is that he’s playing Leicester and Kane MIGHT not get decent game time in both matches. For me it’s worth the risk. Even if he just plays one game there’s a chance he outscores Aguero and if he plays both who knows what might happen. There’s also the possibility of Aguero getting hooked early too which many don’t seem to be considering. We could be looking at another Berbatov 5 goal haul for Kane…..or maybe even Austin! 😀

Here are some stats I've pulled up for their scoring:

PPG over course of the season (55+ minute matches)

    Aguero - 7.1
    Kane - 7.25
    Austin - 5.43
    Eriksen - 5.34

Form - PPG over last 5 games (55+ mins):

    Aguero - 7
    Kane - 8.4
    Austin - 5.2
    Eriksen - 5

This season they've scored a point every:

    Aguero - 10.9 mins
    Kane - 11.71 mins
    Austin - 15.88 mins
    Eriksen - 16.96 mins

    Double figure hauls:

    Aguero - 4
    Kane - 5
    Austin - 3
    Eriksen - 6

    Hauls above 15 points:

    Aguero - 2
    Kane - 1
    Austin - 1
    Eriksen - 0

As we can see from this over the course of the season Kane has actually surpassed Aguero for points per game (Kane has played 16 and Aguero 18 with 55+ mins played). In recent form Kane has also beaten Aguero over the last 5 games. He also has more double figure hauls in less games although Aguero is slightly more explosive.

Austin and Eriksen are trailing behind these two options but they do have 2 games and I fancy them to both play a large amount of minutes in both so they do have the potential to outscore Aguero as well. Aguero does arguably have the best fixture out of all of these players though and could easily score a hat trick vs Leicester (or not start because Bony is being given a chance!)

Makes of these stats what you will but remember……your rival will captain Kane, do you want to risk it? 😉

            Aguero because of Leicester.

Then other DGW players - Austin and Eriksen.

I think most will opt for Kane eventually but at least this gives them some food for thought.

Also Leicester are not the whipping boys people are making them out to be - they've not taken many hammerings this season, mainly losing by the odd goal.

still. aguero is not a choice as your stats say they are very close but kane has 2 games so no contest. if i was desperate (last GW of the season) i would cap eriksen/austin but still so many GWs to go, no reason to captain anyone else.

      You'd captain Kane v QPR.

      You'd captain Kane v Swansea.

Given he didn't start v Fiorentina, he'll play one of the above, and at least a wee bit of the other.

      Easy.

This is the 2nd time you have posted this same lengthy post. In which you offer little analysis whatsoever beyond some basic mathematics like counting and dividing.

"I wanted to update this because Aguero has now played an extra game (and it improves his form) and because I didn't include Eriksen and Austin who I've seen people mention as potential captains for them. Will be easier to just link this post than answer all the captain questions."

You don't have to answer every question, do you? Are you trying to get Jonty to offer you a job or something?

I fundamentally disagree with your conclusions but I have said why before and can't be bothered to go through it all again.

        Hey Ruth,

Thanks for the feedback, its really appreciated!

You're right about the analysis part although that wasn't necessarily the point of my post (maybe it should be at that length?).

While you're right about "basic maths" as I'm sure you've observed on the site a lot of people don't necessarily want to go and work it out themselves and would like to see the basic stats in front of them. This post was aimed at people who want a few stats to make a decision they may be finding tricky. It's certainly been asked enough times!

On the job front I'm not looking for a new career opportunity currently and already have a full time job I'm happy with, however if someone did want to pay me to comment on Fantasy Football then I'd be all for it but it seems unlikely 🙂

No, I don't have to answer every question but it is nice to be able to answer a lot considering the amount I probably ask myself. This is a community that has served me well over the years and I like to give back where I can.

Lastly I'd love to see your thoughts on the captain choice - I don't recall seeing them previously. You don't need to write them again but do you have a link so I can read them? Always nice to see others opinions.

I actually have a hunch that Kane won't be the top scorer this game week but am playing safe by opting for him.

          Hmmm...

I suppose you didn't ask for it to be hulked.

Sometimes when things are hulked they take on the appearance of something more than a general comment and maybe I have reacted to that to some degree.

Indeed, it might be a different situation if I had the power to hot topic things myself.

As I say I spend a lot of time on here and do like to answer a lot of questions if I can and sometimes it's easier to just re-link posts for common questions.

This was intended to be a general comment (albeit a lengthy one). One thing I do want to improve on is my analysis so I do appreciate the feedback. In the future I would like to provide more in-depth posts as I'm sure it will be more helpful.

Oh Ruth stop being such a cynical old witch and just enjoy Andy's glorious enthusiasm for the DGW. What you have to realise is a lot of us play this just for fun and it's not all about analysis and statistics. The first Double Gameweek of what's been a pretty turgid FPL season is something to be celebrated and Andy is a ray of light amongst an otherwise dark period.
In short - Andy great, Ruth bad - apologies in advance for such basic analysis.

A good way of assessing the liklihood of a reasonable dgwk score from a player is how often they have blanked over a two game block of games.

Austin and Eriksen provide a good example of this as both are on the same points 125.

Looking at blocks of two games where they have played and not been unavailable through injury or suspension Austin looks the better bet.

Eriksen has failed to score above four points across two games on seven occasions.

Austin has failed to score above four points across two games on two occasions.

To me this says that Austin is a more reliable bet for those looking to get a reliable good score from a double gameweek player. Eriksen, as the figures show, is explosive. He is an all or nothing option with six double digit hauls under his belt compared to Austin's three.

    Personally I'm going for both.

I had 2FTs last week and took a risk and brought Rose in even though he didn't play. Scored 44 so around average.

Bit annoying that players I considered bringing in scored well like Wolly/Naughton, but had visions of them scoring 2pts. The player I took out was Hutton so at least that didn't punish me.

Anyways looking at caz > Eriksen and giroud > austin with my 2FTs this week.

I'll be taking a hit for Eriksen- but I feel I've already taken it by getting Silva in last week to get XI out in Gwk 27. Works out as a 2pt hit for me.

Fair enough. See above, I could have reduced the hit too but went the other way as it was defenders I was looking at and didn't want to bring in a budget def for one week. Turns out it would have paid off, but just one of those things.

Which mid are you dumping for Eriksen, Jonty? My plan was to do Punch to Eriksen but that 14 pointer, general unluckiness not to score more in previous GWs, and good fixtures is putting me off. It somehow feels wrong to ship Cazorla or Sanchez for a -4 when they have QPR next.

Good way of looking at things, Jonty. Only Austin for me as I wouldn't be surprised to see Eriksen benched for one of the games. I might get Eriksen in GW30 or so when he is more rested, Spurs can focus on BPL and they still have good fixtures.

      More interested on Austin.

However to get him in place of N'Doye, I'll be needing 0.6m, which has to come via a downgrade from my midfield, since the other two striker I have are Kane and Aguero.

From my midfield of (Walters-Di Maria-Hazard-Silva-Ozil), if someone goes out then it is Di Maria (especially after LVG's comment that the Argentine is finding it tough to cope with the English game and also a not so promising next six).

Now here is the question :

Should I take Eriksen (Not really interested on a Spurs' double up for long term) or should I opt for some other midfielder instead ?

    15. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

There is another factor to be considered though. Do you want the player afterwards?

Looking at the DGW on its own is mistaken. It's about points scored over the remaining 11 GWs.

I don't want Austin after the DGW and I don't want to use 2 FTs (or even worse, hits) to get in a player I will only want to remove again. Eriksen, on the other hand, I am happy to keep for the next 6 GWs. I don't mind if he doesn't play 180 mins this week because he's a good pick for the duration now that Spurs only have the PL to contend with. From GW 29 onwards he will probably start every game.

Slightly random statistic how often they blank twice in a row IMO.

Eriksen averages 4.8 ppg. Expect him to play both games and get 10 points (4.8*2 plus a bit extra because they're decent fixtures). But could easily score a lot higher.

Austin averages 5.4 ppg. Expect about 10 points from him too.

I don't really agree with this, I think the pattern you're describing is more coincidental than anything. Going with your logic anyway, the chances of Eriksen exploding in the Gameweek is higher because he has two chances to do so. What if he explodes in both games?

For me it's basically a case of does a player generally look likely to score points or not? I don't think a scoring pattern is particularly relevant as there are so many external factors which affect whether a player does or doesn't score in a given week that it's just too difficult to predict.

I think what it does show is that Eriksen has shown remarkable consistency all season in scoring at least one goal every 4 games at an overall rate of one goal every three games.

Other players have been less consistent and their goal scoring has been more streaky, either starting well and then drying up or starting poorly before hitting a purple patch.

He has scored 7 goals in 17 matches against bottom 13 teams, but only 2 in 9 matches against the top 7. So, since his two DGW matches are both against bottom 13 teams, we should expect him to score one goal this GW, and it will probably be accompanied by 3 BPs.

I think I've just convinced myself that he's worth a 4 point hit, so the next problem is whether he should replace Sanchez or Cazorla.

    Wenger loves giroud
    Wenger publicly praised giroud
Giroud offers perfect style to compliment arsenal midfield

Not sure it's worth it this week. If you don't have Ivan I'd be looking at find the extra funds to get him instead.

No, Saints have decent home fixture. I'm sure you can spend your FT better than that during DGW.

With Defoe falling I now need to do Sanchez to Eriksen to afford him and Austin for the double game week..... Is it worth it

So would be .... Defoe and Sanchez ---- Austin and Eriksen

    Cheers

I'm giving sanchez a couple more weeks, but in your position I'd be very tempted to just ditch now. His price is likely to fall again this week, so you shouldn't lost to much value if he does find form again.

The worry is that they'll sacrifice a little at the back, in order to start scoring, however once alderwerield is back and they have the first choice back 4 I still think they'll get pleny of CSs.

Everytime you've asked this (that I've seen) the consensus has been Austin.

So if you're asking again I reckon you've probably already talked yourself into Costa instead?

    Hey guys! How's it going?

Finally the DGW is upon is... it's a bit less exciting than initially hoped since Chelsea doesn't have a double, but still, it's a DGW!

I currently have Kane and 2FTs. My thoughts are Giroud -> Austin for one FT, then Downing out for the second. I had initially thought Eriksen... but Silva is more tempting. Am I letting the double 90 minutes for Eriksen blind me?

    For FT this week...

    A) Eriksen
    B) Silva
