Good news for Pompey and fantasy managers – Jermain Defoe will avoid surgery on his troublesome calf and will not be sidelined until the New Year – indeed, there’s an outside chance he could line up against Blackburn this weekend….
Defoe picked up the calf injury whilst on international duty with England but had been troubled with cramps and discomfort for several weeks. However, surgery is not required and it sounds as though he could be back in action very soon. Portsmouth’s Head physio, Gary Sadler, broke the news today…
“Jermain went for tests in London but his injury doesn’t appear to be as bad as we thought it was…We’ll put him on a programme and constantly monitor him but there’s a chance that he could be able to play at the weekend”, remarked the sponge man.
“There’s a minimum risk of him picking up a further injury, so if he feels capable of playing then we don’t see it being a problem.”
That’s a major boost for Defoe owners and a likely frustration for the 52,000 FPL managers who have already transferred the striker out of their squads this gameweek. Defoe is due a price drop in that game by tomorrow as a result.
There’s every chance that Defoe will miss Sunday’s game of course, but if fit, he has the fixtures (BLA, wba, NEW, bol, WHM) over the coming weeks to contribute some decent returns. If he does start against Rovers and looks over his troubles – he could well be worth risking going into the Christmas period, particularly if your rivals have already shipped him out.
The Pompey physio also offered news on the rest of the queue in the Fratton Park treatment room. Diarra is another who will avoid surgery on an ankle injury – he is due to return in “a few weeks time” according to today’s report.
Sol Campbell is nursing a sore toe but sounds as though he’ll be in the mix for a return against Rovers. Kranjcar has stepped up his training having picked up an ankle injury. According to Sadler, “there’s a chance that he could rejoin training at the end of the week.”
A doubt for the weekend then but Kranjcar is another that needs monitoring over this “blue period” of fixtures for Portsmouth.
