Man City confirmed the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor yesterday evening for an undisclosed fee.
Adebayor joins recent signings, Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez, to form what now appears to be a near embarrassment of riches up front for Mark Hughes. For us fantasy managers, we have to consider that all three players – former fantasy favourites the lot of them – now carry a significant element of risk when it comes to rest and rotation throughout the season…
The cast to this expensive production of uncertainty doesn’t stop there. Despite temperament, injuries and a lack of consistency, you’d also have to count Craig Bellamy, Valeri Bojinov and, of course, Robinho, in the mix for starts in a central attacking role. You can even call on Felipe Caicedo and Benjani when the leading men start failing. When you consider that Hughes has the service of Shaun Wright-Phillips and Martin Petrov in the wide positions, you just can’t see an obvious route to City’s preferred formation and lineup…
It will take a good few pre-season games for us to decode the City formula, particularly given that Hughes gave starts to Bellamy and Bojinov in yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates, with Caicedo and Benjani also figuring.
We can’t question that Adebayor has the ability to produce for City. It’s another swish of the cheque book that will have Hughes beaming with excitement, if he can steer Adebayor away from the serious lapses in form suffered whilst at the Gunners. Neither can we question the merits of Tevez and Santa Cruz. How the hell all three are going to work in the City lineup, in combination with Robinho and Wright-Phillips, is another matter entirely. Can we really take a punt on City’s strikers for the opening gameweek now?
