Arsenal. Double gameweek. Need more be said? Oh go on then… As highlighted in Greek Fan’s tweet service earlier this afternoon Arsenal’s previously pending fixture at home to Bolton has now been rescheduled to be played on Januarth 5th or 6th, and that means only one thing – another double gameweek for us to play with, and a really meaty one at that.

Many of us saw this on the cards when Arsenal lost to Man City in the Carling Cup this wednesday. We were already aware of the gap in the schedules thanks to the previously reported double taking part when Stoke host Fulham, but now the fixture has been set we can plan ahead with great confidence for gameweek 20. So what does this do to our thoughts when it comes to transfers, let’s delve deeper and digest…

Arsenal are obviously the key proponents of this here scheduling gift, and quite rightly so. Despite failing to score since Robin Van Persie fell foul to an injury on international duty our fantasy taste-buds are truly piqued thanks to Arsenals brand of offensive play. Fixtures around this added game are also pleasing, very pleasing indeed (HUL, AVL, por, BOL, EVE, bol).

This is the first top four team this season to have a double week scheduled and it couldn’t have fallen much better – playing away at Portsmouth and then hosting Bolton in the same week will look very tempting, so who should we be looking at? Alex Song would be the ideal cheap defender but he will be heading off to the African Cup of Nations so if we want to head defensively then William Gallas looks the best option, he won’t come cheap at £6.6m – but we saw early in the season he can get his bottom on the end of crosses to add goals to his fortunes too.

It is obviously Cesc Fabregas (who most of us must have now, surely?) who could bring in points by the truckload – I’ve already earmarked the captains armband, it’s never too early. All Andrei Arshavin owners are probably in a bit of a quandary, there’s been a winter of discontent setting around the diminutive Russian on these shores thanks to some not so stellar returns, so now the decision to sell (or buy for non-owners like myself) will be tougher as the prospect of two fixtures on the horizon is hard to ignore.

Arsenal have midfielders and options in abundance so beyond that it’s hard to see who could claim they will play both games. However up front (once he returns) I’ll be keeping a close eye on the battle between Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo over leading the line in the incumbent Van Persie spot. If the tall Dane can get back to fitness and take that spot (I see no reason why not, Arsenal are calling out for some height right now) then he poses brilliant value at just £6m even without a double gameweek, but with it – boy, oh boy.

Lest we forget there are two teams playing in this here fixture, so I’d be remiss to mention Bolton and their certainly pleasing set of fixtures as well. Their run in (WHM, wig, bur, HUL, ars, sun) doesn’t look half bad either. Bolton are the only team to not have yet keep a clean sheet this season so their defence looks a risky investment – however Gary Cahill is a rest assured starter, friend of the bonus and knows how to get his head on the end of a cross so looks like the wisest option were one wanting to take the plunge.

Again though, it’s the attack that looks like the options here – they might not know how to defend so far this season, but Bolton have been scoring goals. Recently highlighted addition to The Watchlist Matty Taylor jumps out as the best option. I (and a few others) personally have a few doubts about Taylor this year, but there is no denying he is integral to success at Bolton, so he could very well light up in these games, and has the track record to prove it.

Kevin Davies is the other obvious candidate, a bit of a card magnet but he serves his suspension for 5 yellow cards this weekend so he shouldn’t have that to contend with again (at least for a little while). Last year Davies was the seventh highest scoring forward in the Fantasy Premier League game (beating the likes of Defoe, Rooney & Adebayor to name but a few) and is continuing a reasonable level of return (if not emphatic) this season. If you need a budget striker and fancy Bolton to carry on scoring then he could be your man.

Anyway, I’ve gone on far too long – all you need to know is that gameweek 20 has got that little bit more interesting. So go get out your notepads and start seeing just exactly how we can capitalise.
