Chelsea coasted past Championship Preston at Deepdale this afternoon, setting up their double league fixture in gameweek 24. Carlo Ancelotti’s side progressed courtesy of strikes from Anelka and Sturridge but the win came at a price with Belletti and Lampard suffering worrying knocks.

Us Fantasy Managers will be on alert given the potential offered by the Chelsea ranks for gameweek 24 with fixtures at Burnley and Hull. However, while Anelka is set to gain further heavy investment, the injury to Lampard will likely temper interest in him for a day or so.

Lampard requested to be withdrawn late in the second-half and, according to assistant boss Ray Wilkins, he is set to be assessed on Monday…

“Frank felt a little bit of tightness in his calf, so we got him off early as a precaution…we will know more about that tomorrow.”

Belletti meanwhile was subbed even earlier – after just 18 minutes to be exact. Details on his injury remain scarce so we can only sit and wait for further details to emanate from Stamford Bridge over the next 24 hours. Belletti may not be a big name player for Chelsea, but he was looking tempting as a short-term defensive option for the double gameweek given that he is currently occupying the holding midfield role.

The injury to Lampard will have plenty of early investors worried. Frank has already been brought in by over 25,000 managers in the Fantasy Premier League game, while Anelka currently boasts transfers in of over 70,000. That’s perhaps not surprising with Rooney and Tevez missing gameweek 23 due to Carling Cup involvement. Anelka looks by far the best prospect as a replacement for the next two gameweeks and today’s performance and goal will have only compounded matters.

We can expect further investment in both Anelka and Lampard over the coming week then, leading up to the tricky home game with Birmingham on Wednesday. Lampard could well be a doubt for that game and Ancelotti could even contemplate resting him in preparation for Chelsea’s two away trips to Burnley and Hull in the space of four days in gameweek 24.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
