Aaron Lennon is facing up to the possibility of a hernia operation that could keep him out of the Tottenham starting lineup until Easter.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has revealed that Lennon, who is still at least a fortnight from a return from a groin injury, is also nursing a slight hernia which could require an operation once he returns to training.
“He feels he can get through it, so we’re going to continue to train him for a couple of weeks, work with the physios and see how it goes. If after that he needs the hernia operation, we’ll have it done. But he feels there’s a chance he can get through. He could be back in a couple of weeks for us and that’s what we’re hoping for.”
Any operation could rule Lennon out for a further six weeks, meaning that he may not be back in the Spurs lineup until April. Redknapp has been without Lennon since the end of December and his continued absence would likely see the right side of midfield occupied by Niko Kranjcar or David Bentley. The latter started again at Birmingham, doing enough in the midweek win over Fulham to hold onto his starting role and leave Kranjcar benched…
There’s uncertainty in the Tottenham midfield then, and this may take another twist with the confirmation of Eidur Gudjohnsen’s arrival at the Lane. The Icelandic striker gives Redknapp greater options and the Spurs boss has even hinted that he could deploy the former Chelsea man as an attacking midfielder, adopting a diamond formation…
“We’ve lost Aaron Lennon so we haven’t got a great deal of width. We can play a diamond formation if we want and he can be a big player in that system.”
With Younes Kaboul also arriving from Portsmouth, this is a time of transition for Spurs and us fantasy managers can only sit and wait for the dust to settle before assessing the impact on their fantasy talent. Jermain Defoe and Luka Modric should remain untouchable regardless of the changes around them but if there’s a change in the system, their role and fantasy output may well be affected. Tottenham have a very attractive run of fixtures from gamweek 26-33 (wlv wig EVE mcy BLA stk POR sun) and a good deal of interest could come their way as a result.
