Arsene Wenger faces further injury concerns as Arsenal near their Champions League clash with Porto next week. The Gunners suffered injuries to both Alex Song and Andrey Arshavin in last night’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

Arsenal take on Porto in the away league of their Champions League tie on Wednesday before returning home for the Emirates encounter with Sunderland three days later. That home clash will be one that’s targeted by Fantasy Managers as a fixture that could bring rich returns for the likes of Fabregas and Arshavin, should he be fit. Song owners would also be hoping for a clean sheet. The injuries sustained last night now cast doubt over that however. Wenger certainly seems unsure…

“Unfortunately we have lost Alex Song with a medial knee ligament problem…I hope he will be available for next week but it is not for sure. Arshavin looks to be a hamstring problem. We have to assess that too. So the questions marks will be about Arshavin and Song. We’ll know more tomorrow. Arshavin has a scan today and Alex Song has come in for treatment. He is very sore today so we’ll have to see how he responds.”

We can only wait on updates from the Emirates then, but any period of absence is likely to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Arshavin owners. The Russian has delivered just one goal and one assist in his last 11 league starts, a hugely disappointing output given his price and the opportunity afforded him by a central attacking role.

With Nicklas Bendtner back from injury and installed as centre forward last night, Arshavin shifted to a wide position. It’s difficult to stay whether that change in emphasis will see an upturn in the Russian’s fortunes; this hamstring injury may have killed off the chances of assessing that.

Despite his lack of recent form, Arshavin is still owned by over 13% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers but that’s likely to drop considerably, along with his value, should he be ruled out for a number of weeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
