In gameweek one many people took a wild stab at the continental flavours of Mauro Boselli as their candidate for captain – we all know how that turned out. In gameweek two Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie drew more than their fair share of takers, only for Arsene Wenger to shackle them to the bench for an hour. So far then, gambling with the award of your armband has proved a mug’s game.
The safe and let’s face it, the most effective option so far has been to stick the captaincy on Didier Drogba and wait for the points to roll in. It’s no surprise to find the Chelsea man leaving all contenders in his wake in our poll right now then. The visit of Stoke to Stamford Bridge and the imperious form of the Cote D’Ivoire star speaks for itself. Chelsea won the corresponding fixture 7-0 last season. Chelsea have won 6-0, 6-0 so far this season. Throw those stats in with Drogba’s performances of three goals, three assists and five Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points and the maths add up to a simple solution – Captain Drogba….
Thankfully it’s not a complete one horse race. A new candidate is finally sticking their head above the parapet this week and he happens to be the most owned player in the FPL game. Fresh from using the skills he picked up this summer at the Javier Hernandez school of scoring with your face (and to be fair to him, scoring an absolute belter too) Gareth Bale is “the other horse” this week, currently trailing Drogba by a huge margin but keeping his team-mate Frank Lampard in third. Bale is unquestionably electric right now; a seemingly unstoppable runaway train of a left-winger who is unlikely to be slowed by the dubious buffers presented by the Wigan defence. Further returns for the Welshman look likely.
If you’re willing to look beyond Chelsea and their six goal-a-game average, or Mr. Bale, then there are some other appealing fixtures this week that could draw you in. Manchester United will be looking to put the sword to the stuttering Hammers and Roy Hodgson will be looking to bounce from Monday’s defeat with the visit of “The Albion”, for starters.
Facing off against Ian Holloway’s Blackpool has attracted armband punters so far this season, but not too many appear to fancy Fulham’s assets against them this week. Their best candidate, Bobby Zamora, currently sits -at the time of writing- in only 9th place of our poll with just 30 votes. A handy differential perhaps but then anyone who has the balls to look beyond Drogba and Bale deserve a rich reward.
