Three gameweeks in and still Wenger’s teamsheet dominates our Saturday morning thinking. The form of Gareth Bale, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba has been great and all but it’s starting to create template Fantasy lineups.
We need some differentials; we need Wayne Rooney, Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and the Arsenal pairing of Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie to offer us some form and shake things up. The Gunners pair are not going to give us options from the bench though and once again, with just a few hours to go before Arsenal kick-off at Ewood Park, we wonder whether we’re going to get run the rule of the mercurial pair from the first whistle.
Let’s take a wander with the Saturday morning rags and find out…
Will Wenger throw in both Robin Van Persie and Cesc Fabregas against Blackburn’s bullies?
For three weeks now Wenger’s selection of this pair has been a burning issue. The Gunners boss has come out this week to state that both are “available normally” which would seem to indicate that they are in line for the first starts of the season – however, Wenger has also been quick to point out that he expects a battle at Ewood and has called for protection for his players. With this in mind will he throw his fragile World Cup pairing straight into the lineup?
The Sun: Yes – they both start with Rosicky and Wilshere dropping out and the Sun deciding to relegate hat-trick hero Theo Walcott to the Arsenal bench to make way. Van Persie partners Chamakh up front then.
The Guardian: No – Van Persie starts here but there’s no place for Fabregas with the Guardian assuming that Wenger will keep him protected on the bench. Walcott and Chamakh start, Song shifts to midfield with no start for Wilshere or Rosicky.
The Times: No – neither of them start according to this paper. Wenger shifts Song to midfield and Wilshere, Rosicky and Walcott maintain their starting roles.
The Telegraph: No both are spared the Ewood battlefield as Wenger keeps faith with Wilshere, Rosicky and Walcott. Bizarrely however, the Telegraph seen the Gunners boss omitting Song from the lineup. Not very likely. Worse still, apparently some fella called NameName will be playing across the back four for Arsenal. Shoddy Mr Telegraph, very shoddy.
We say: The time has surely come for Fabregas. I don’t see starts for Rosicky or Wilshere for this away game and although Song will shift into midfield, that still leaves room for the skipper’s first game of the season. I’m less confident on Van Persie who for me, will start on the bench with Chamakh keeping his lone striker role.
Will Marc Albrighton continue to offer value and start for Villa?
The young winger enjoyed an outstanding start to the season in the opener against West Ham but has since suffered a frustrating time and has failed to make an impact. With thousands of Fantasy Managers jumping on his budget potential after Gameweek one, does the Villa man still offer value now that Gabby Agbonlahor is back in contention?
The Sun: Yes – Albrighton starts for the red-top with Carew and Agbonlahor clearly considered major doubts by this paper. Neither of that pair start so it’s Emile Heskey leading the attack.
The Guardian: Yes – another start for Albrighton is on the cards as Carew returns up front with Ashley Young played up in a central supporting role once more. There’s no sign of Agbonlahor despite his return to training on Friday.
The Times: Yes – this paper also backs another start for Albrighton with again, no sign that Agbonlahor will be present on the Villa teamsheet on Sunday.
The Daily Telegraph: It’s unanimous; the final broadsheet also backs Albrighton for a start here with Carew returning to partner Ashley Young in attack.
We say : We beg to differ. Agbonlahor made an instant impression on Thursday and if fit, and we’re told that he is, he looks certain to play. With Villa and McDonald needing a result, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Young shifted out wide and Carew and Agbonlahor restored as a pairing.
Will we be graced by the timeless genius of Paul Scholes when United take on West Ham at Old Trafford?
Two games gone and we’re told that Scholes is front runner for player of the year. It seems ridiculous but he’s started so strongly there’s every chance that he’ll deserve that gong in a few months. Can he offer Fantasy Managers long-term potential however? With Ryan Giggs also looking to display his talents and Carrick and Anderson in the reckoning, will Alex Ferguson continue to rely on Scholes in his engine room when the Hammers come to visit?
The Sun: Yes, Scholes starts alongside Fletcher with both Nani and Valencia on the flanks.
The Guardian: Ditto. The coppertop playmaker earns another start as the Guardian go with an identical lineup to the Sun.
The Times: Yes, the Times agree – it’s a Scholes/Fletcher pairing once again with the two wingers, Nani and Valencia, offering supply to Berbatov and Rooney in attack.
The Daily Telegraph: No, this paper opts for a Carrick/Fletcher pairing in central midfield and also recalls Gigg’s to one of the flanks with no place for Nani.
We Say: We’ve changed our minds on this one. With the international break to come, there’s every chance that Scholes will be given another opportunity to show his considerable worth to United leaving Giggs and Carrick on the bench. Pitch time might be limited should United establish a lead though.
