Tuesday brings the usual refresh of our Watchlist player rankings. You can view our current thinking in your right-hand menu on the frontpage.
You can read more on how these work right here but in a nutshell these are player recommendations based on a number of factors and based roughly on the next five Gameweeks.
Pretty self-explanatory but, as always, here’s a rundown of the major movers in the rankings this week…
The City defence, fresh from keeping out Chelsea’s previously rabid attack, have not surprisingly climbed our rankings with Joe Hart toppling Pepe Reina at the top of the Keeper’s table. City have strong fixtures, coupled with a tactical approach from boss Roberto Mancini that has helped them to four clean sheets so far this term. Hart, always a significant barrier when the defence is breached, looks good value right now and, aside from Kolo Toure, looks the most secure root to potential defensive returns from City.
Reina’s demise down the rankings is the result of a disappointing result at home to Sunderland and an injury to Paul Konchesky that will like force Roy Hodgson to field Dan Agger at left-back once again. Liverpool also have a local derby trip to Goodison to come after the international break and a home fixture with Chelsea in Gameweek 11. Drops all round for Hodgson’s previously fancied defence.
A whole host of keepers have jumped above Reina this week with the likes of Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer, Boltons Jussi Jaaskelainen and West Brom’s Scott Carson all offering decent potential with strong fixtures to come.
The Defender rankings show the aforementioned Kolo Toure topping the bill with United’s pairing of John O’Shea and Patrice Evra both climbing in second and third. While United’s defence remains under question, their fixtures look set to provide a strong platform to help them rectify recent problems. The return to fitness (albeit gradual) of Rio Ferdinand should also help matters.
Chelsea’s Ashley Cole remains high, despite testing opposition – his attacking potential keeping him simmering at the top. West Brom’s Gonzalo Jara and Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz are the big climbers – both offering strong value with fairly decent attacking potential. Fulham’s Brede Hangeland and Bolton’s Gary Cahill are new entries lower down with fixtures on their side. A word here too about Sunderland’s Elmohamady who has to contend with tough fixtures but has begun to present decent value with his attacking potential from the right-flank. You could argue that with clean sheets at a premium across the board, Elmohamady is worth the risk even with United his next opponent. Look for a big climb up the rankings for the Egyptian once Steve Bruce’s side find a kinder run of opponents.
In attacking terms the top places remain largely untouched. United’s Nani justified his placing on top or our Watchlist with further strong returns against Bolton on Sunday, whilst Chelsea’s Florent Malouda holds in second, despite a tough run of opponents to come. Fulham’s Clint Dempsey returned just a single Bonus Point from the Everton game on Saturday but the promise of further returns playing up front against kind opponents, keeps him in third spot.
James Milner almost makes into the top three and looks a strong high-to-mid price option with his fixture list. City’s lack of goals is a concern however. Steven Gerrard and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri all climb below him although Nasri’s position will likely drop once Cesc Fabregas becomes a factor once again. Bolton’s Martin Petrov, fresh from his first significant contribution on Sunday, is a new entry along with Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia. Both have the fixtures to boost their tallies over the next five Gamweeks and offer some strength as mid-term differentials.
Man City’s David Silva is another notable new entry – a rotation risk, Silva does appear to be constructing an understanding with Carlos Tevez which could be both profitable and provide the Spaniard with greater security within the competitive City squad. Again the lack of goals from Mancini’s side make him a gamble.
Carlos Tevez is himself a significant climber in the Forward’s rankings just failing to displace the established top two of Dimitar Berbatov and Didier Drogba. Liverpool’s Fernando Torres and West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie follow the City striker as their weekend returns and smart fixture promote them in our thinking. Darren Bent’s double at Anfield promotes him up the table, despite facing United, Blackburn and Villa next. Andy Carroll’s stock is falling despite the assist against Stoke; with City next for him, the home clash with Wigan may well be a make-or-break weekend for some Carroll owners.
Bent isn’t the only notable climber with West Ham’s Victor Obinna and Bolton’s Kevin Davies rising as their forthcoming opponents fall far more kindly. Kenwyne Jones also makes big progress with his four goals in four game run for Stoke and, despite having fairly mixed run of games, he climbs above Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh who has stalled of late with just one goal in four.
