Spurs win over Aston Villa last weekend saw Rafael Van der Vaart once again grab the headlines for the home side, with his match-winning brace now meaning he has scored four goals in three games in all competitions at White Hart Lane.

The ex-Real Madrid man not only offers Harry Redknapp a boost in quality to his squad, his adaptability seems to be impressing the Spurs boss to such an extent that ‘Arry is even prepared to ditch his beloved 4-4-2 system in order to accommodate his array of attacking, creative talents. Redknapp spoke of this after the game, saying:

“It’s not easy to play with two strikers, it’s almost impossible really. Two out-and-out-strikers is difficult, because Rafa doesn’t play wide right, he floats off the line and Luka Modric does almost the same, so that leaves you very open.

You’re not going to keep two strikers on your team with Rafa and Gareth Bale. You have to change the whole shape of your team. It’s an attacking team that is very open to the counter-attack.”

In spite of this admittance, Spurs, nevertheless, began the game playing 4-4-2, with Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up front and Van der Vaart on the right. The Dutchman is not a natural right-winger, and as these chalkboards shows, he continually found himself drifting away from the wing into the middle to look for the ball in the first half, leaving Spurs somewhat unbalanced on the flank.

With Aaron Lennon replacing the Russian at half-time, Van der Vaart took his place behind Crouch as a second striker, and -with Lennon taking over on the right- was given freedom to roam as Spurs went looking for the win.

A look at our OPTA Members Stats shows that Spurs, with 88 attempts, have the third highest number of shots at goal, but have managed to find the net just eight times. Compare this to Man United, who have 85 shots and a return of 16 goals or Blackpool, with 11 goals from just 63 shots, and you can see where the problems lie for Redknapp’s men.

As the table below shows, Crouch, Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane have 19 appearances between them this season, and from their combined total of 27 shots, the goal-shy strike force have found the net just once. Van der Vaart alone, on the other hand, has managed 17 shots in his four league appearances, scoring 3 times.

PlayerAppearancesShots at GoalShots on TargetGoals
Peter Crouch7920
Roman Pavlyuchenko6731
Robbie Keane4420
Rafael Van der Vaart41793
Jermain Defoe2740

Redknapp is more than aware of his prowess, beaming:

He’ll score goals. He gets on the ball, he always wants to receive the ball, he’s always looking to score. When the ball goes up to Crouchy he’s always around there looking for it. He’s got a real knack for scoring.

Perhaps the most unfortunate player to suffer from this lack of poor Tottenham finishing, in terms of Fantasy points, has been Gareth Bale. On Saturday alone, Bale had 6 Key Passes that led to goal attempts from team mates, but left the pitch with just 1 FPL point for all his toils. Bale’s total of 20 Key Passes is more than any player in the league so far but he has, incredibly, not a single assist to his name.

The average position map below, taking Van der Vaart’s (number 11) first half on the right wing into consideration, shows just how far forward he played against Villa and if Redknapp continues to play him in his second-half position against Villa, the £8m man could, conceivably, be regarded as an Out of Position forward in the FPL game.

A quick look at the two top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders sees Nani has 18 shots in 7 games and Florent Malouda has 19 shots in 7 games. Indeed, Van der Vaarts goal attempts per game is not just more in line with top forwards, it is actually, per game, the highest in the league so far.

Dimitar Berbatov2373.28
Andy Carroll2273.14
Kenwyne Jones2163.5
Didier Drogba2173
Rafael Van der Vaart1744.25

While his away returns have been just (2,2) it’s hard to ignore his performances at White Hart Lane. Van der Vaart has scored (9, 15) picking up the 3 Bonus Points in both home games he’s played. He’s already risen 0.1m in price since Saturday’s game and, with the second two week international break of the season now upon us, expect plenty more managers take the plunge before Gameweek 8 commences.

I had to put VDV in, had no choice!

Stuck in Elmohamady and Coleman this week as well seeing as i'm top of my mini league and my rivals have made 2-3 subs as well. Hopefully in for the season!

Shame you couldn't have Barton in, he only just went up a few days ago. perhaps Morrision at 4.5 for West Brom will turn out well.

Great article. He has to play as the support striker. He is their best player & is best suited to a free role. If the Netherlands didn't have Sneijder VDV would play in Sneijder's role, enough said.

Malouda...might get rotated wi champs league, no certainty though.

Fabregas...might not be at his best against brum, Arsene Wenger is unpredictable too so he might start on the bench in a game Arsenal can surely win without him

VDV is essential now, no question about it

Bale could go either way, he's one of the best left sided players in the world already and isn't having much luck. If VDV and bale develop an understanding, I think i'd want both then

Is there a compilation of Van Der Vaart's best bits available anywhere? A sort of vdvdvd? 😉

I'm more and more convinced that it's going to be impossible for him to maintain those stats. Not enough data as yet. I think his returns to date are anomalous. Or maybe I'm just justifying my faith in Bale.

I think there's hope for Bale-owners in those comments from Arry too. He's not just reformulating to accommodate VDV, but Bale on the wing too from the sound of it.

I agree, I'm sticking with Bale, it's only really fair to judge him playing at LM as he doesn't get clean sheet points for playing LB, I think he could score big in the coming weeks, I thi j he's just been unlucky that his quality service hasn't been put away. With Spurs fixtures Bale to VDV seems a waste, I'd rather just stick with Bale for a couple weeks more, if he doesn't do the business or gets moved to LB then he's gone but he's only just started playing at LM, give the guy a chance!

Crouch, Pav and Keane are good strikers, though if good offers came in for any of them I think Daniel Levy will terminate them

A key pass is a pass that someone creates a goalscoring opportunity out of - so someone gets on the end of it to have a shot, header, etc.

So it's definitely not that, it's just the strikers not taking the chances he's currently providing. Could all change easily if they find their shooting boots.

I know the feeling, I am monitoring quite closely as, barring injuries I am going to do Gerrard out Fabs in and Salcido out Elmohamady in....

Elmo rose last night which means that as long as either he or fabs don't rise again and either Stevie G or Salcido don't fall then I can just about afford it!

        What's your plans?

    My midfield right now is

    Arteta Bale Nani Malouda Adam

VdV is clearly an essential but not sure who to take out? If it was Bale I could do Adam > Albrighton to raise enough funds but would take an 8 point hit

    Any thoughts?

Hey guys, currently my WC team is:

    Foster, Jassi

    Konchesky, Toure, Alex, Hutton, Ridgewell

    Arshavin, Malouda, Nani, Petrov, Dempsey

    Chamakh, Bent, Elmander

i know that there are some people i have to get in, but im trying to be a bit different... but is there anyone in here i really have to get out?

For an "alternative" team selection I think it looks good. I would possibly be a little worried over Hutton - Has been starting but for how long still and Spurs haven't been the best on defense so you're relying on his attacking quality...fixtures coming may be a bit tough on him. Konchesky...you know the murmurs are that Liverpool will keep a clean sheet sometime soon and he is an attacking player...but you have to wonder when that will happen for them...Arshavin and Chamakh may be good but perhaps not consistent...The rest looks good and well...if you're picking such an alternative team then consistency would be your saving grace surely...and you may not have that yet in those players..But I commend you on the direction you're taking...I'm certainly not brave enough for that yet...

Read that as well and I don't like it. He's a bloody idiot, Tevez, who should learn to get along with hit managers.

Then again he does have a point, Mancini should be able to play a more attacking formation with that squad.

...who seems to be on his way out now that VDV is "essential". it's ridiculous, some people must be taking 8 point hits every week to get all these people in and out and in and out.

I dunno what change to make for next game. original plan was stockdale to krul but i can prob get away with playing foster for saves against arsenal. if chamakh is anything to go by, he'll head the ball to foster hands loads of times. so that leaves me with changing either a defender or chamakh. candidates are phil jones (blackburn) or faye. who to change? i'm leaning towards p jones but rivals in my league have robinson.
