Spurs win over Aston Villa last weekend saw Rafael Van der Vaart once again grab the headlines for the home side, with his match-winning brace now meaning he has scored four goals in three games in all competitions at White Hart Lane.

The ex-Real Madrid man not only offers Harry Redknapp a boost in quality to his squad, his adaptability seems to be impressing the Spurs boss to such an extent that ‘Arry is even prepared to ditch his beloved 4-4-2 system in order to accommodate his array of attacking, creative talents. Redknapp spoke of this after the game, saying:

“It’s not easy to play with two strikers, it’s almost impossible really. Two out-and-out-strikers is difficult, because Rafa doesn’t play wide right, he floats off the line and Luka Modric does almost the same, so that leaves you very open.

You’re not going to keep two strikers on your team with Rafa and Gareth Bale. You have to change the whole shape of your team. It’s an attacking team that is very open to the counter-attack.”

In spite of this admittance, Spurs, nevertheless, began the game playing 4-4-2, with Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up front and Van der Vaart on the right. The Dutchman is not a natural right-winger, and as these chalkboards shows, he continually found himself drifting away from the wing into the middle to look for the ball in the first half, leaving Spurs somewhat unbalanced on the flank.

With Aaron Lennon replacing the Russian at half-time, Van der Vaart took his place behind Crouch as a second striker, and -with Lennon taking over on the right- was given freedom to roam as Spurs went looking for the win.

A look at our OPTA Members Stats shows that Spurs, with 88 attempts, have the third highest number of shots at goal, but have managed to find the net just eight times. Compare this to Man United, who have 85 shots and a return of 16 goals or Blackpool, with 11 goals from just 63 shots, and you can see where the problems lie for Redknapp’s men.

As the table below shows, Crouch, Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane have 19 appearances between them this season, and from their combined total of 27 shots, the goal-shy strike force have found the net just once. Van der Vaart alone, on the other hand, has managed 17 shots in his four league appearances, scoring 3 times.

PlayerAppearancesShots at GoalShots on TargetGoals
Peter Crouch7920
Roman Pavlyuchenko6731
Robbie Keane4420
Rafael Van der Vaart41793
Jermain Defoe2740

Redknapp is more than aware of his prowess, beaming:

He’ll score goals. He gets on the ball, he always wants to receive the ball, he’s always looking to score. When the ball goes up to Crouchy he’s always around there looking for it. He’s got a real knack for scoring.

Perhaps the most unfortunate player to suffer from this lack of poor Tottenham finishing, in terms of Fantasy points, has been Gareth Bale. On Saturday alone, Bale had 6 Key Passes that led to goal attempts from team mates, but left the pitch with just 1 FPL point for all his toils. Bale’s total of 20 Key Passes is more than any player in the league so far but he has, incredibly, not a single assist to his name.

The average position map below, taking Van der Vaart’s (number 11) first half on the right wing into consideration, shows just how far forward he played against Villa and if Redknapp continues to play him in his second-half position against Villa, the £8m man could, conceivably, be regarded as an Out of Position forward in the FPL game.

A quick look at the two top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders sees Nani has 18 shots in 7 games and Florent Malouda has 19 shots in 7 games. Indeed, Van der Vaarts goal attempts per game is not just more in line with top forwards, it is actually, per game, the highest in the league so far.

PlayerShots at GoalAppearancesShots per Game
Dimitar Berbatov2373.28
Andy Carroll2273.14
Kenwyne Jones2163.5
Didier Drogba2173
Rafael Van der Vaart1744.25

While his away returns have been just (2,2) it’s hard to ignore his performances at White Hart Lane. Van der Vaart has scored (9, 15) picking up the 3 Bonus Points in both home games he’s played. He’s already risen 0.1m in price since Saturday’s game and, with the second two week international break of the season now upon us, expect plenty more managers take the plunge before Gameweek 8 commences.

Depends on your strategy. Some (like me) have a bargain bin of a defence, and will pay the price when the big teams turn out cleansheets - my gamble is to predict that cleansheets will be a relative rarity so points are more likely returned from midfielders and strikers.
However a good number of other people believe that the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City will churn out the clean sheets on a regular basis so will reward you with nice point hauls.
Two ways of thinking, both equally valid gambles - you just have to take your choice.

"Florent Malouda has created 19 chances for his teammates this season but he has been credited with no assists.

Steven Gerrard has created 19 chances this season but Sotirios Kyrgiakos' header v Blackpool was the first to be taken by a teamate.

No Premier League player has created more chances (20) than Gareth Bale this season. But he is yet to be credited with an assist."

U av a good amount of casy tied up in cashley but he is great to have.. n toure..u could downgrade to cheaper city player n givet at 4.4..but cashly could provide a good amount of assists, even goals this season on the back of 20+ cleanies n e is a guarenteed starter.. iv alex and vidic, which is a bit of waste as the dont have the same potential for points as cole 🙁

Im hoding on to Bale as I believe in two weeks Spurs will av their defence back n his passes are not being converted, but eventually they will be!!! On the other side Malouda is a big rotaion risk with european games etc.

To have Fab or do without is the big q.. im goin to hold out until gw if i can before I aquire his services again.

I could see it being a 0-0 or 1-0 to one of the teams.. could be a late goal deciding that game. I hope Man U can pick up the pace a bit but so far they have been shocking.

Here's a dilemma linked to this article...

Once Fabregas is back and fully fit, who would you leave out of your squad:

    Fabregas (want)
    Malouda (got)
    Nani (got)
    VdV (got)

Or I could fit all 4 in (plus Drogba + Tevez) but that would leave me with an uber cheap defence e.g. Krul, Foster, Williamson, Jones, Faye, Jara, Gouhouri!!

Choosing only 3 of the above allows me to have a bit more quality in defence, but which one do I leave out???

    Help please!

Weirdly I jsut came on to ask exactly the same question:

VDV, Malouda or Nani OUT to get Fabregas IN

I'm thinking Malouda>Essien and Etherington>Fabregas (I'm wildcarding so no points hit)

I'm leaning towards Malouda. Interestingly, I did a poll with my work colleagues (the ones who do well in the FF) and their consensus was to keep VdV, Malouda and Nani and forget about Fabregas saying that hes too injury prone and he'll be off pens once Van Persie is back...

So far not bad...almost the same as last year[except the new team mates]..through passes and chippin the ball are harder now but i've found a way around that - same with dribbling. Harder to score goals and penalties also..but with more practice i'll get better. Been getting used to the game for the last few days..only started playing online last night and as usual you get the f*ckers who disconnect their system when you score too many goals...how u finding it?

Have got it yet, have it ordered through Amazon so it should be here sometime through the week. To be honest I was always more of a pro evo fan, but I heard the last one was terrible so took a punt on fifa instead and was relatively pleased. I also thought the graphics on Pro Evo and the way it moved looked really clunky judging by the ad.

The new pro evo is good, 100% passing game, takes skill to score a goal, as opposed to holding down sprint with messi and ronaldo for the length of the pitch (thats what happened in 2008,2009 and 2010).

                Black Ops looks fantastic

I'm pro evo through and through, i've continued to buy the ps2 versions and sacrificed graphics in favour of playability and fun. Pro Evo's have all been terrible on the next gen consoles, really disgusting. Fifa still feels wonky to me, haven't enjoyed a fifa games since fifa '95 on the megadrive, that was quality.

It'll also be interesting to see what happens when Defoe comes back for Spurs. VdV seems to profit the most playing in behind Crouch...who acts as a target man etc. Problem is that Crouch doesnt score enough and you cant rely on VdV for all your goals.
What happens when Jermaaaaaaain come back...esp given how much 'arry loves 442!

    Guys,

For a 8 point hit is it worth changing Konch/Gerrard/Etherington & Bale to get

    Jaaskelainen/Carson
    Huth/Elmohamady/Simpson/Coleman/Jara
    Malouda/Fabregas/Etuhu/Nani/Van der Vaart

Dunno why you'd want to get rid of Etherington... 5 assists in 7 games, he's unrivalled in that price bracket and invariably does something when Stoke are at home. He also takes virtually all of their set pieces including possibly penalties.

He could have easily scored more than 9 points on Saturday...

I originally planned to get of him this week, but have realised that that would be madness!

'Essential' gets lobbed around willy nilly. For me the only 'essential' players are Drogba and Fabregas. While Valencia is out Nani is 'near essential' and with a good run of games Malouda makes the grade.

Hate it when there's a major bandwagon during an international break. VDV will probably go up by 0.5m before the next gameweek starts. Crap.

Very tempting to sell VDV if he goes up 0.4 or 0.6 then buy the next bandwagon, then will be able to quickly afford all the essentials that are fit i.e. Malouda, Nani, Drogba, Fabs, CAshley without compromising the team.

          Not in my book.

Bale is getting more chances in my side, there is however a chance that I buy VDV as well if he continues to do well.

Don't get swayed by the crowd! 3 away games in 4 for Spurs coming up, and Bale might finally get his bit of luck with the points.

im sure vDv is going to be good option for the season...but dont see why you need to buy him RIGHT NOW. It's always nice to buy these players cheaper but if you really need him later you can afford that extra 0.5m he's going to cost

With the following Mid & Fwd how do I squeeze in Fabs?

        Malouda, VDV, Nani, Etherington, Albrighton
        Drogba, Wingy, Tevez

I have 3.7 in the bank and 6.3 tied up in Alex in Def.

Option 1: Malouda & Etherington > Fabregas and 7.6 or less mid.
        Option 2: Nani > Fabregas
        Option 3: Malouda & Alex > Fabs & Cashley

What do people think about this team - looking to get a top class midfield, with 2 decent strikers and a cheap defence...any improvements??

        Foster, Jaask
Mummy, Dann, P Jones, Williamson, Jara
        Fabs, Malouda, Arteta, Nani, Etherington
        Drogs, Bent, Jarvis

Looks good but you must replace Jarvis. He plays as a midfielder and even when classified as a midfielder last year he was a rather poor option.

Spend 5.2 on Wingy instead of Jarvis and see if can save 0.7 elsewhere. Albrighton or Adam instead of Arteta?

Adam, Penalties and direct free kicks will see some returns for his budget price.

Albrighton is good though, my Spurs friend saw him first hand last week and said he was very impressive, future england international-style

Can anyone explain how price protection works when a player is injured? I'm considering selling Konchesky as he looks like he's about to drop 0.1. Does it last a certain number of days and when does it happen?
