Spurs win over Aston Villa last weekend saw Rafael Van der Vaart once again grab the headlines for the home side, with his match-winning brace now meaning he has scored four goals in three games in all competitions at White Hart Lane.

The ex-Real Madrid man not only offers Harry Redknapp a boost in quality to his squad, his adaptability seems to be impressing the Spurs boss to such an extent that ‘Arry is even prepared to ditch his beloved 4-4-2 system in order to accommodate his array of attacking, creative talents. Redknapp spoke of this after the game, saying:

“It’s not easy to play with two strikers, it’s almost impossible really. Two out-and-out-strikers is difficult, because Rafa doesn’t play wide right, he floats off the line and Luka Modric does almost the same, so that leaves you very open.

You’re not going to keep two strikers on your team with Rafa and Gareth Bale. You have to change the whole shape of your team. It’s an attacking team that is very open to the counter-attack.”

In spite of this admittance, Spurs, nevertheless, began the game playing 4-4-2, with Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up front and Van der Vaart on the right. The Dutchman is not a natural right-winger, and as these chalkboards shows, he continually found himself drifting away from the wing into the middle to look for the ball in the first half, leaving Spurs somewhat unbalanced on the flank.

With Aaron Lennon replacing the Russian at half-time, Van der Vaart took his place behind Crouch as a second striker, and -with Lennon taking over on the right- was given freedom to roam as Spurs went looking for the win.

A look at our OPTA Members Stats shows that Spurs, with 88 attempts, have the third highest number of shots at goal, but have managed to find the net just eight times. Compare this to Man United, who have 85 shots and a return of 16 goals or Blackpool, with 11 goals from just 63 shots, and you can see where the problems lie for Redknapp’s men.

As the table below shows, Crouch, Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane have 19 appearances between them this season, and from their combined total of 27 shots, the goal-shy strike force have found the net just once. Van der Vaart alone, on the other hand, has managed 17 shots in his four league appearances, scoring 3 times.

Redknapp is more than aware of his prowess, beaming:

He’ll score goals. He gets on the ball, he always wants to receive the ball, he’s always looking to score. When the ball goes up to Crouchy he’s always around there looking for it. He’s got a real knack for scoring.

Perhaps the most unfortunate player to suffer from this lack of poor Tottenham finishing, in terms of Fantasy points, has been Gareth Bale. On Saturday alone, Bale had 6 Key Passes that led to goal attempts from team mates, but left the pitch with just 1 FPL point for all his toils. Bale’s total of 20 Key Passes is more than any player in the league so far but he has, incredibly, not a single assist to his name.

The average position map below, taking Van der Vaart’s (number 11) first half on the right wing into consideration, shows just how far forward he played against Villa and if Redknapp continues to play him in his second-half position against Villa, the £8m man could, conceivably, be regarded as an Out of Position forward in the FPL game.

A quick look at the two top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders sees Nani has 18 shots in 7 games and Florent Malouda has 19 shots in 7 games. Indeed, Van der Vaarts goal attempts per game is not just more in line with top forwards, it is actually, per game, the highest in the league so far.

While his away returns have been just (2,2) it’s hard to ignore his performances at White Hart Lane. Van der Vaart has scored (9, 15) picking up the 3 Bonus Points in both home games he’s played. He’s already risen 0.1m in price since Saturday’s game and, with the second two week international break of the season now upon us, expect plenty more managers take the plunge before Gameweek 8 commences.

Here's that beef and oyster pie recipe:

        http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/dec/05/northern-ireland-winter-warmer-recipes

Beef shin, stout & oyster pie

I love pies, especially this one. We use oysters, because back in the day they were cheaper than beef and helped bulk out the pies. The combination of oysters and Irish stout is just wonderful. This is pictured on page 55, minus its lid. Serves four.

        For the filling
500g shin of Dexter beef, bone and marrow included
        Salt and pepper
        Vegetable oil
        4 shallots
        1 sprig thyme
        1 tbsp sugar
        ½ litre stout
        1 litre brown chicken stock
        8 Strangford oysters, shucked

        For the pie case
        50g lard
        50g butter
        200g plain flour
        A pinch of salt
        2-3 tsp chilled water
1 egg yolk, for egg wash

        For the lid
        200g strong flour
        A pinch of salt
        A squeeze of lemon juice
        125ml chilled water
        150g butter, cut into cubes

First make the filling. Cut the shin into two steaks, trim off any excess sinew and season. Heat a little oil in a pan and brown the beef on both sides. Add the shallots, thyme and sugar; cook for a couple of minutes. Add the stout and stock, bring to a boil and reduce by half. Pour into a roasting tray or casserole with a lid.

Cook in an oven heated to 140C/ 285F/gas mark 1 for three to four hours. Once done, lift the shin from the stock, remove any excess sinew and flake the meat. Remove the marrow from the bone, dice and set aside. Strain the stock, reduce to a sauce-like consistency, check the seasoning and add the flaked meat, marrow and shucked oysters.

For the pie case, rub together the lard, butter, flour and salt, add the cold water and bring together into a dough. Leave to rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out as thinly as possible and use to line four large dariole moulds or similar. Rest in the fridge for 20 minutes. Heat the oven to 160C/320F/ gas mark 2½. Line each mould with baking parchment and blind bake for 20 minutes. Remove the parchment, cook for two minutes more, brush with egg wash and bake for another minute. Trim off any excess pastry.

For the pie lid, sift the flour and salt into a bowl, and add the lemon juice, water and butter. Use a knife to mix into a dough, then press gently together – don't overwork it. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes, then roll out as thinly as possible. Cut into discs to top each pie, then leave to rest in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Spoon the filling into the cases, top each with a lid, brush with egg wash and pierce to let steam escape. Cook for five minutes at 220C/425F/gas mark 7. Serve with champ, cabbage with bacon and – for a touch of class – angels on horseback: season 100g beef fillet with salt, sugar and thyme, wrap in clingfilm and refrigerate overnight; next day, remove the clingfilm, pat dry and cut into four very thin slices; wrap four shucked oysters in the beef slices and serve.

It was steak pieces (cost me around €5 for 450g) but well worth it. Wasn't too bitter, I also put wholegrain mustard in there and a couple of tablespoons of tomato puree. I was worried about the bitterness factor as it is much stronger tasting than Guiness but honestly, it worked an absolute treat. Really flavourful.

I think I used brisket, but because I was aiming for the recipe above I really wanted beef shin. My butcher is too bloody posh though, so they only sell stuff like steaks and lamb cutlets >___>

I'll see if I can find that stout where I live.

Well its an easy make (apologies to those becoming annoyed that it has turned into Fantasy Food Scout)
            Roughly you need
400g of Beef steak pieces (a bit of extra fat is fine)
330ml of Oyster Stout (any ale or strong stout would do)
            300ml of water
            2 Carrots
            2 Small onions
A handful of roughly chopped mushrooms
            2 beef oxo cubes
2 tablespoons of good tomato puree
salt & black pepper and a pinch of caster sugar

Chop the carrots into 2cm pieces and finely chop the onions
Cob the beef, ale/stout, stock cubes, water, onions, carrots, sugar, salt, pepper, tomato puree (basically everything BUT the mushrooms) into a large saucepan
Bring to the boil briefly then turn down to a bare simmer and leave partially covered for 2 - 2 1/2 hours.
When there is about 30mins to go roughly chop your mushrooms and lob them in so they stay quite firm.
If it needs thickening add 1 tbsp of plain flour with 40g of melted butter and it will thicken up a treat.
Thats all there is to it. A monkey could make it and it tastes fandabidosie.

Hmm, the meat adds a lot to the flavour. Generally I've tried sticking other veg in but they all dissolve over the two hours. You could maybe try reducing cooking time, or by using robust veg like carrots, parsnips etc early doors and add softer veg like spuds with only an hour to go. Worth an experiment anyway Garg

It already has mushrooms in it, but if you can get some chunky dried muchrooms (not the expensive ones like Porcini), that would be the best sub for beef by far.

Yep, I've hybridised it a bit from the original and its always been great, and aside from a bit of chopping at the start its a very easy make.

OOOO forgot to add that you should put in a tablespoon of good quality wholegrain mustard in at the start.

Yes he did, annoyingly. He's still beating me in our mini league too....

Last year he made it far enough in the cup to be mentioned in the podcast. He was drawn against Pure Olivia, and Granville joked about that game being the televised match...

Please stop panic-selling Chamack (72% of the way to a drop).

He's got 3 home games in 4, then an away game at wolves. Against chelsea at the weekend most of arsenal's chances seemed to be falling to him. Fair enough he fluffed them all, but he'll stick one or two away soon enough.

I'm sticking with him, does everyone think this is stupid?

Yes and no. I don't have access to any kind of stats, but I believe he works really well when Nasri is playing in central midfield, less so when Fabregas is back.

Plus, I sold him last week for Tevez, so that was a good move, and on top of that I have Drogba and Caroll. So even if I did have a space, he's still got Berbatov to weigh up against in the same price bracket.

It's on the Guardian as well but without some details.

It only confirms two things we already knew.

        1. Tevez is a bit of a **** and should learn to listen to his managers or at least find alternative ways to express his opinions

        2. Mancini is a bit of a **** and should drop a holding midfielder so I can get more fantasy points from Tevez

No, he's principled. This is from what I know obviously, which is mostly an article in the Guardian, but I like that he's a family man. He grew up very poor, and I think he knows that he's lucky to be where he is, doesn't take it for granted.

Plus he didn't like the whole "wwelcome to Manchester" campaign, and publicly said so. I don't think many Man U fans hate him either after swapping sides. And I think he would have stayed if he could.

Fair enough if he is a family man but that was not what I was talking about.

I don't know if Man United fans like him or not but I certainly think they would agree that Tevez didn't really say things the way they were in that saga. He gets caught up in emotions and then runs of to the press to vent his fury far too easily.

If he wanted to stay at Man United we will never really know because if SAF made a mistake he will hardly admit it anytime soon.

Basically I think Tevez should choose his fights a bit more carefully, because I think that he works hard and admirably on the pitch in every match.

I really don't know what to make of Mancini, going by what former players have said of him his player management skills leave a lot to be desired. And as for this bust up with Tevez at half time, I seem to remember the tv commentator suggesting that Mancini would have to give a thorough half time talk and then being perplexed as to why Mancini came out 5 minutes before the players to sign autographs.

I will be amazed if he does!! He has been forgotten by the masses because he hasn't played well since before the end of last season and clearly isn't right at the moment. Rooney is a phenomenal footballer when at his best but before last season was never a great FF prospect, he only really gets points when playing as a lone striker which is unlikely at the moment IMO. Plus his form is poor anyway which all adds up to a very overpriced option.
Berbs or Nani are the way forward in the Man Utd team, although I will probably eat my words after the next gameweek!!

                    Hey, that's a great idea.

Although, it would have to be independently judged, because Wenger could set Bacari Sagna to be fouled by Drogba and just keep them both out for the season.

                    Or something, you know.

I'm not too into that idea, but I really like the self policing done by Van Marjwick (sp?). It takes fellow professionals and managers to make a judgement call when the referees and FA fail. De Mong is a serial offender, hopefully by the Dutch (at their own expense) taking such a public stance the message will sink into his Neanderthal skull.

Would not work, since a perfectly good tackle might keep one out for a long time and still not be the real reason the player is out.

Say RVP or Torres are rushed back as they always are and then injure themselves when they get a fair tackle, should the tackler then be banned? The tackle was what pushed them over the edge, but it was not the real reason they were injured and it might not have injured other, tougher, players.

Oh Lord, 'mong' is hardly the worst word used on here on a regular basis. And I personally have expressed the contrary opinion, I also do not believe in the eye for an eye punishment.
I will continue to refer to De Jong as De Mong as he is an incredible f*cking idiot. In common parlance Mong is a term of abuse for somebody with below normal intelligence (at least that is how I use the phrase), so I believe I am literally accurate by using the phrase. Humourless politically correct policing on a opinion based site such as this is frankly p*ssing in the wind. Yes of course there is a line to cross, but for me, De Mong is very much on the safe side of that line.

                    Soop - yep that's right.

Here we go, 'he's a thug, blah blah blah'. He makes hard tackles that do go over the top sometimes but they are no different to a Stuart Pearce tackle for instance. Hopefully he will curb this in future.

I think Pompey fan is saying that it's unfair to compare people with a mental disability to De Jong.

The poor chaps probably saw the tackle and just gave each other a knowing glance - "oh great, now we're gonna get lumped in with THIS thug".

    Carlos Salcido:

I am a current owner and admirer, but contemplating shifting him out in favour of Elmo.....

Looking at the heatmaps and average starting position plus restricted highlights it appears he is a playing a fairly attacking role for a (fairly) solid team.

What do you guys think, hold or sell? - anyone watch fulham regularly or have an insight into his likely fantasy performance based on his role....

Call me a cynic, but isn't there a good chance that this is a tactical withdrawal? He could be out just for 2 weeks, the international weeks, and conveniently be back for Chelsea's next league match.

This happens all the time doesn't it. If a player is "injured" then the international managers don't lose face by appearing to be bullied by club managers not wanting their players to go to every international game. Or, it's the club managers pulling the wool over the international managers' eyes. Alex's hobbling around efforts at the very end of the Arsenal game give the story, whosever it is, a bit more credibility.

We won't know of course, but I bet if I sell him he'll start against cilla.

For me, Malouda, I am doing Malouda OUT Arteta IN on my WC next week, Arteta is coming into form, Lampard will be back soon adding another name into the scoring hat at Chelsea, and Arteta frees up 1.5m at the moment. Drogba will always be essential, people will captain Drogba for good fixtures, if you don't have him, you miss his double points. Not so many will captain Malouda, and you are therefore only missing his "single" points rather than 20-30 from a big Drogba (C) haul.

I say Malouda is the least "essential" of that bunch

Agreed. Made this exact transfer myself this week. Sticking with the Berb ahead of Tevez for now though, next four fixtures look good and as long as Rooney isn't firing on all cylinders Berb will look very good. Plus he's not doing anything this international break.

Not too early IMO. I have done my transfers already. And took a 4 point hit. Risky but I wouldn't have been able to afford it by the end of the International break.

          Torres -> Tevez

          Bale -> VDV.

          Hopefully my team stays fit.

i really dont think rooney is a differential, there are a lot people that can get two points lol but seriously as AP said above most of his goals last year came from tony V and rooney himself praised him for not being like ronaldo and cutting inside instead of crossing he said he could have counted on tony V to deliver the 'early' cross. With tony V out nani plays right side and he plays like ronaldo (cutting inside for the occasional shot) Also his head isnt in the game with all this family stuff so i think rooney is a huge gamble

              Groan. Cheers for that.

No hassle if it's the case, though. Got Bale on the bench - I could throw him in. Swapping Alex for Elmo was just to get some cash to get Fabs back in a few weeks.

i actually did the opposite bandwagon and transferred him out on saturday evening in order to afford my transfer strategy over the next few weeks which included getting toure in before his rise.

i obviously felt a bit silly as alex delivered me a 14pt parting gift and toure conceded, so this news has really brightened up my day!

So now Alex is out... waiting for news about Konchesky, or it will be Jara at OT (brrr...).

Yeah presumably anyone who is playing their WC will have an advantage in the first round of the cup.

But then it's the FFS Cup. Anything can happen! 8)

It's going to be awesome (although I'll blantantly go out in the first round)

Would anyone care to take a look at my team and suggest where they think I should go with it (no rude suggestions please)? I have no problem with the odd hit, as I'm profiting from them so far.

As a starter, would Malouda > Arteta be absolutely freaking mental?

Mental? No. Would I do it? Probably not.

I’d be looking at shaking up your lesser lights, like: Perch, Etuhu or Thomas.

Not the most exciting transfer, but that would be my port of call.

            Cheers. Was looking at maybe:

            Perch > Steinson
            and
Thomas > Barton if there's a doubt of him starting.

I just struggle to see where I'm going the week after:

            Carroll > Odem maybe.

It's not exactly the series of swift dynamic transfers I'd like to undertake to halt my slide.

Yeah I think you need more oomph in your midfield. What about a progressive move, changing Toure to Boateng (later Kolarov) giving you an extra 0.5 to add to your 0.6 in the bank. Bin Etuhu and you should be able to get someone better for 5.6 ish

Chelsea have the potential to win 7-0 at home. You would be spewing if you sold Malouda and he grabbed 2 goals and an assist a week later.
