Spurs win over Aston Villa last weekend saw Rafael Van der Vaart once again grab the headlines for the home side, with his match-winning brace now meaning he has scored four goals in three games in all competitions at White Hart Lane.

The ex-Real Madrid man not only offers Harry Redknapp a boost in quality to his squad, his adaptability seems to be impressing the Spurs boss to such an extent that ‘Arry is even prepared to ditch his beloved 4-4-2 system in order to accommodate his array of attacking, creative talents. Redknapp spoke of this after the game, saying:

“It’s not easy to play with two strikers, it’s almost impossible really. Two out-and-out-strikers is difficult, because Rafa doesn’t play wide right, he floats off the line and Luka Modric does almost the same, so that leaves you very open.

You’re not going to keep two strikers on your team with Rafa and Gareth Bale. You have to change the whole shape of your team. It’s an attacking team that is very open to the counter-attack.”

In spite of this admittance, Spurs, nevertheless, began the game playing 4-4-2, with Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up front and Van der Vaart on the right. The Dutchman is not a natural right-winger, and as these chalkboards shows, he continually found himself drifting away from the wing into the middle to look for the ball in the first half, leaving Spurs somewhat unbalanced on the flank.

With Aaron Lennon replacing the Russian at half-time, Van der Vaart took his place behind Crouch as a second striker, and -with Lennon taking over on the right- was given freedom to roam as Spurs went looking for the win.

A look at our OPTA Members Stats shows that Spurs, with 88 attempts, have the third highest number of shots at goal, but have managed to find the net just eight times. Compare this to Man United, who have 85 shots and a return of 16 goals or Blackpool, with 11 goals from just 63 shots, and you can see where the problems lie for Redknapp’s men.

As the table below shows, Crouch, Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane have 19 appearances between them this season, and from their combined total of 27 shots, the goal-shy strike force have found the net just once. Van der Vaart alone, on the other hand, has managed 17 shots in his four league appearances, scoring 3 times.

Peter Crouch7920
Roman Pavlyuchenko6731
Robbie Keane4420
Rafael Van der Vaart41793
Jermain Defoe2740

Redknapp is more than aware of his prowess, beaming:

He’ll score goals. He gets on the ball, he always wants to receive the ball, he’s always looking to score. When the ball goes up to Crouchy he’s always around there looking for it. He’s got a real knack for scoring.

Perhaps the most unfortunate player to suffer from this lack of poor Tottenham finishing, in terms of Fantasy points, has been Gareth Bale. On Saturday alone, Bale had 6 Key Passes that led to goal attempts from team mates, but left the pitch with just 1 FPL point for all his toils. Bale’s total of 20 Key Passes is more than any player in the league so far but he has, incredibly, not a single assist to his name.

The average position map below, taking Van der Vaart’s (number 11) first half on the right wing into consideration, shows just how far forward he played against Villa and if Redknapp continues to play him in his second-half position against Villa, the £8m man could, conceivably, be regarded as an Out of Position forward in the FPL game.

A quick look at the two top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders sees Nani has 18 shots in 7 games and Florent Malouda has 19 shots in 7 games. Indeed, Van der Vaarts goal attempts per game is not just more in line with top forwards, it is actually, per game, the highest in the league so far.

Dimitar Berbatov2373.28
Andy Carroll2273.14
Kenwyne Jones2163.5
Didier Drogba2173
Rafael Van der Vaart1744.25

While his away returns have been just (2,2) it’s hard to ignore his performances at White Hart Lane. Van der Vaart has scored (9, 15) picking up the 3 Bonus Points in both home games he’s played. He’s already risen 0.1m in price since Saturday’s game and, with the second two week international break of the season now upon us, expect plenty more managers take the plunge before Gameweek 8 commences.

    Any suggestions for my GW8 transfer? (Team linked).

    Thinking either

    a) Gerrard -> Nani
    b) Gerrard -> Fabs
    c) Tevez -> Rooney
    d) Alex -> a 4.5m Def
    e) Bale -> VDV

            Yup- unlucky would have been missing out because Figueroa got taken off half a minute before getting the clean sheet bonus (I'M NOT BITTER ABOUT THAT AT ALL).

            Though even then, those 5 points would have likely helped other players get higher scores too. In summary, luck plays a massive part for everyone, so no one should blame it. However, I will continue to do so.

              that figueroa sub was crazy, he normally always plays 90 mins.

              58:59 Substitution Ronnie Stam joins the action as a substitute, replacing Maynor Figueroa.

    damn! have made no rushed transfers all season, no points hits, always been careful to wait until the Friday. So Sunday night in a knee-jerk I got rid of Evans for Alex, just to avoid a fall and rise. Serves me right. Oh well, I think Alex is a keeper for the season anyway but a bit of a pain. Lesson learned I guess.

      That is just unlucky. I think that is probably one of the first things like that to happen all season. I.E Brace then lots of people knee jerk but turns out he's injured a few days later. I have already taken a 4 point hit. I hope it doesn't bite me on the arse.

        if injuries occur over the break at least I still have the WC button to press rather than take too many hits. I got dempsey in for bale at the same time to avoid a fall and rise too. Are the US playing this break? Hope not....
        It is just unlucky and although I've been cautious with transfers, it was starting to hurt team value and I could see it restricting some moves in a few weeks, e.g. getting fabs or tevez in.
        Still, Alex was perhaps not the best starter for me in GW8 anyway - I've got 2 other home defenders and the mummy to play.

            there is a chance he will be rested for wolves, making his fixtures up until gw12 look not great. i'm sure those who got rid of malouda 2 weeks ago wont be regretting it.

            People know that Chelsea have a next four of avl, WLV, bla and liv.

            With this information, and the CL fixtures, they think if Malouda is to get his occasional rotation again, it will be in the WLV fixture which would mean he has avl, -, bla, liv.

            Given those (supposed) fixtures and trying to squeeze in the likes of Nani and Fabregas, is why people are entertaining their options.

            I don't think anyone is unsellable, and while I more likely to keep him that not... I would gladly sell Malouda.

              I think everyone will get rid of him GW10 when Arsenal have West Ham at home and Malouda has just been benched Vs Wolves. I am getting rid of him then. No transfer next week save it, have two transfers Malouda -> Fabs and downgrade elsewhere. Well that is the plan.

                I can see the fixture probs but there are ways round it..however I hope people ignore them!
                I agree no one is essential but he has no indication of dropping off form and to sell and rebuy would be prohibitvely expensive!
                Anyway if thats all their worries are I can live with that for what he produces the rest of the time, he could easily score at BB and AV.
                I like it when the game starts to diverge like this..it was all, innevitably, quite similar at the start...

            Tried to link it three times, but it crashed my laptop each time. Figured I wouldn't try it at work in case in brings the whole place to its knees.

                true true.

                andy makes basically my point below though- he gets rested, and your money is spent on great strikers, and fabregas, rather than malouda away at villa & rested for wolves- you make more points probably, and also save on transfers getting fabs in GW11.

                Not to be dismissed to lightly man-it is on such decisions that good scores are gained- moving away from the herd and making a logical and slightly ballsy decision.

        Honestly mate, I would get Call Of Duty Black Ops, looks awesome. However if it is like W@W then you are write/right holding off. I plan to do the thing in Morrisons. This was with Fifa so I think it will be with Black Ops too. Basically if I buy another chart game (Fifa 11) then I get Black Ops for 27.99. I want both anyways so 🙂 🙂

          yeah, good move there. Nah, I've had shedloads of Microsoft Points for free, and I've got loads of games I've barely played, and now I have more on the way.

          Then I got Blur recently, played loads, then dropped it for PeaceWalker on the PSP. Now I've still not 100%'d that (great game), and Ace Combat arrived. Now I've just started that, and I've been watching TV on my PSP.

          My gamerscore is pathetic considering the amount of games I have.

                I only really have time for one FPS, and it's whatever the rest of my friends are playing. Have to say, I suck, even though I have fun, but that was probably the first proper FPS I've owned since doom so maybe I'll have a head start.

                Killstreaks are not good for me though.

    How would people rate 27k as a position at the moment?? Quite consistent really. Gone up 5 in a row now. Don't really see myself dropping down to often either. Surely just 7GW'S gone this is good?? I haven't ever been this high before. Mainly because I didn't find this site until mid-way through my first season (last season) and by that point I was already 200k ish, from GW18 onwards though I went all the way up to 56k so the way I see it is that there is room for improvement and it is a long season and at this point it is quite good.

      No thanks, I felt Malouda would out score Lamps befor the season started, thus me goin for him and I stick buy that and I honestly can't see me ever getting rid of Drog, I don't doubt without injury he will be top scorer so why get rid?

      good side, nothing obvious that needs doing. maybe look at shipping kaboul, haven't kept track of if he's playing or not but pretty sure he's not a regular and even so spurs have tough games coming up.

    Anyone thought of using their wildcard now to make money on the risers before the next game? Has anyone done it before? Did it work?

      Your a bit late to be honest mate. You should have done it on Saturday when people go mad to transfer the players who done well in. If you dont need to make a lot of changes to your team i wouldnt bother wildcarding now.

      You should be doing that from Saturday night mate, maximises the time you have to get risers.
