When it comes to results, Roberto Mancini can be well and truly satisfied with the start to the season. City sit second in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Chelsea and that start, coupled with the victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s side, has led to claims that they are currently the biggest threat to Chelsea’s title charge. And yet news of a half-time spat between Mancini and his skipper Carlos Tevez in Sunday’s narrow victory over Newcastle, has led to the City boss acknowledging that changes are required.

It’s suggested that Tevez’ concerns, expressed so vociferously in the Eastlands half-time dressing room, concerned Mancini’s tactics. We’ve seen over the first seven games of the season that the Italian has adopted a cautious 4-5-1 formation, founded on a rock solid platform afforded him by a defensive midfield shield consisting of Yaya Toure, Gareth Barry and Nigel De Jong. In Fantasy terms this can be seen to have limited City’s appeal as a source of attacking points.

For a side that’s challenging for top spot, surprisingly only Tevez has presented a reliable Fantasy prospect, with Adam Johnson apparently threatened by the risk of rotation and James Milner rarely given the opportunity to get in goalscoring positions. City have scored 9 goals but our Members Opta stats show that they rank third bottom in terms of “Goal Attempts†– with just 59 efforts on goal; only Blackburn and Wolves have had fewer. That stat clearly illustrates the fact that City aren’t near firing on all cylinders as an attacking force.

That could well change in the near future. Significantly, yesterday’s reports stated that Mancini is looking to change the system, claiming that the current setup is “out of necessityâ€â€¦

“Adebayor has just recovered from injury, [Mario] Balotelli not so. Without flying full backs like [Jérôme] Boateng and [Aleksandar] Kolarov, who can push forward, I’ve had to adjust the team to get results and stay in touch with the leaders. But only until everyone is back and fit.”

Such a statement not only suggests that we will see a more attacking approach from City, heightening the appeal of the likes of Milner and Tevez, but also that both Kolarov and Boateng have key roles to play in his future system. This would not only hint that these two look likely first choice options at the full-back positions, but also that they will be given the freedom to provide an attacking outlet.

Both Kolarov and Boateng have stalled as prospects due to injury, but both are now close to kick-starting their City careers. Boateng has started the previous two matches and would now see installed at right-back. Kolarov meanwhile has returned to training and could be in line for a return against Blackpool a week on Saturday.

While Boateng has the likes of Micah Richards and Pablo Zabeletta as competition for the right-back role, Kolarov will have to see off the challenge from an out-of-position Joleon Lescott and in the long-term, the threat of Wayne Bridge. To my money, the Serbian looks to have the more secure role as a result. Kolarov is also arguably the bigger threat to opponents – possessing a hammer of a left-foot which will surely fire in efforts on goal if he is afforded the freedom and room to explore the opponents half.

Kolarov is currently priced at 5.7 in the Fantasy Premier League game, with Boateng at 5.8. They would both present a route to City’s strong defensive potential which has, to this point provided 4 clean sheets. Whether Mancini’s new system and tactics will lessen their defensive resolve is something we can only speculate on. However, it’s clear that both Kolarov and Boateng are firmly in his the City manager’s plans as not only key defenders, but also major components in a new approach which may well see City unshackles themselves as an attacking force.

If you feel the need for further research, you can of course read our full Scout Reports of Kolarov and Boateng carried out in the pre-season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Dunno about Coleman, and no one really does to be honest.... It's hard to call whether he'll keep starting or not.. I personally doubt it... Everton have Osman/Bily who can also play on the right, and they're both decent players.

Looks pretty likely for the next few games at least. Osman will be playing on the left while Pienaar is out injured, so the only other challenger for the right mid spot is Bily, who I can't see starting.

How important would you say defence is in FF? Ive gone for the budget option with rotating. Currently its, Hart, Carson, Mummy, Jara, Dann, Faye, Perch.

But the person at the top of the mini league im playing in has a defence of: Van der saar, toure, sagna, evra, samba, ridgewell.
2nd place has sagna, cole, evra, jagielka.
3rd place has, Almunia vidic, cole, sagna, young.

They seem to be doing well on an expensive defence, quite worrying looking at mine!

I'm top of my mini league with Konchesky O'Shea Williamson Foley and Elmo (had Alex 2 weeks ago). Currently on 408 points.

Can't comment on previous years but it just depends on that week I guess. Didn't expect many points last week with Sunderland and Utd playing against each other. But a 0-0 gave me 15 points between Elmo and O'Shea. A 1-1 result could have changed that.

For me, I won't be sticking too much into defense but I may well upgrade Konchesky to Kolarov

They won't bid for a player who's almost 28. If they'd have wanted him, they'd have bought him, simple. Everyone is wetting their knickers over Vdv, but just wait and see if he's still scoring 2 goals a game at the end of the season.

VDV is an attacking midf, mind you in his 1st two seasons at Ajax he played striker. He also has 84(!) caps for a team 2nd in the world. In Holland, with his form atm, he's currently regared as their best midfielder. Last year he singlehandedly kept RM in the race, when Kaka was injured. He then kept Kaka on the bench when fit, until the coach under pressure from the top to reinstate Kaka in the team. 'Arry will never play him oop, he'll play him at his best position. Leave him outof your team on your peril.

Everton v Liverpool. A meaningful merseyside derby. Bring it on!

My only disappointment at Liverpool's (expected) start is that Rafat is not there to enjoy the fun. And a potential England manager is gonna get ruined.

Totally agree - would love to see Rafa huffing and puffing over it. Really dislike him - he and his shite brand of football is the primary reason I now dislike Liverpool more than Man Utd

With both Kolarov & Boateng attacking. It might make CIty susceptible to conceding on the counter attack. Just a thought.

Richards and Bridge are pretty attacking too but they were still solid. Pretty much everyone in that team apart from Silva does a defensive job.

If Bridge ever gets back in expect the clean sheets to dry up. I still have nightmares after sitting behind the goal in the England v Croatia match where he time and again got skinned - defensively inept.

Might I direct peoples' attentions to an article on Mancini's defensive set-up thus far this year...

    http://sportingblogs.wordpress.com/2010/10/02/mancini%E2%80%99s-man-city-italian-industry-and-the-yaya-toure-factor%E2%80%A6/

The gist is that it may well be beneficial for City to keep their three central mids as in seven of the last eight years the title has been won by the team with the best defence. But, as a neutral, with all that money at his disposal I'd like Mancini to be putting out a stonkingly attacking side that blows everyone's minds. With his financial backing, it'd be rude not to...

I would imagine the long-term plan is a fluent attacking side (I doubt the sheikh is going to be happy with a defensive team having pumped so much money in) but whilst the players are still gelling as a unit and getting to know each other then a defensive approach may work best for them as they won't yet have the fluidity to beat the best teams with all out attack.

The move from a defensive to attacking side could be the thing that undoes man city this season. I do think if they keep with the current set up they will pick up enough points to be challenging for the title at the end of the season.

Boateng also got right back in their first 11, despite not having a pre season like Kolarov did. I think there is a good chance Kolarov will start against Blackpool.

    RMT

    Hart Carson
    Koncheskey Coleman Jones Shawcross Enrique
    Bale Gerrard Malouda Yaya Barton
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

I am doing Gerrard -> Fabs this week.

I am aware I am severely lacking United coverage.

Future plans include getting in one of Nani / VdV for Bale and Elmo. Think this will have to involve getting rid of Hart. Will do this over a few weeks.

Always disappointing when the players on your radar are publicised to everyone else but I guess it means you must be onto something!

My plan for the week (2 free transfers) is to do:

    Bale to Fabregas and
    Torres to Tevez

    I'm also thinking of doing:

    Harper to Krul
    Alex to O'Shea and
    Konchesky to Boateng

How does that sound? Worth a 12 pointer for all 5 transfers?!

So pretty much the only way krul gets you back the 4 point hit is with a clean sheet, otherwise you lose out

Foster could still get save points, I’d just keep him.

Every season the top midfielders outscore the top attackers. Even last year when Drogba and Rooney had very good seasons.

I am a fan of having the best midfield possible. Even started this year with two budget strikers and (at the time) the best midfield I could.

Also I don't think there are many good attacker options now. Torres and Rooney out of form. I'm not convinced about Berbatov either yet. For me Drogba-Tevez-Carrol looks like the ideal strikeforce at the moment.

Sorry if this has been done, but it amused me. Macheda calls Rooney a chav:

He goes beyond chav – and his (soon to be ex) wife is the uber chav of chavs

He called him a 'coatto', which my Italian colleague says translates more like 'scally' than 'chav' - I don't think Rooney would mind being called a scally so much, it's pretty much a compliment in Liverpool.

When you take a quote like that, you have no idea of the context. I call my mates everything under the sun but it's in jest and it's just banter.

But we're not mates, so that's just an insult. 😉
