When it comes to results, Roberto Mancini can be well and truly satisfied with the start to the season. City sit second in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Chelsea and that start, coupled with the victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s side, has led to claims that they are currently the biggest threat to Chelsea’s title charge. And yet news of a half-time spat between Mancini and his skipper Carlos Tevez in Sunday’s narrow victory over Newcastle, has led to the City boss acknowledging that changes are required.

It’s suggested that Tevez’ concerns, expressed so vociferously in the Eastlands half-time dressing room, concerned Mancini’s tactics. We’ve seen over the first seven games of the season that the Italian has adopted a cautious 4-5-1 formation, founded on a rock solid platform afforded him by a defensive midfield shield consisting of Yaya Toure, Gareth Barry and Nigel De Jong. In Fantasy terms this can be seen to have limited City’s appeal as a source of attacking points.

For a side that’s challenging for top spot, surprisingly only Tevez has presented a reliable Fantasy prospect, with Adam Johnson apparently threatened by the risk of rotation and James Milner rarely given the opportunity to get in goalscoring positions. City have scored 9 goals but our Members Opta stats show that they rank third bottom in terms of “Goal Attempts†– with just 59 efforts on goal; only Blackburn and Wolves have had fewer. That stat clearly illustrates the fact that City aren’t near firing on all cylinders as an attacking force.

That could well change in the near future. Significantly, yesterday’s reports stated that Mancini is looking to change the system, claiming that the current setup is “out of necessityâ€â€¦

“Adebayor has just recovered from injury, [Mario] Balotelli not so. Without flying full backs like [Jérôme] Boateng and [Aleksandar] Kolarov, who can push forward, I’ve had to adjust the team to get results and stay in touch with the leaders. But only until everyone is back and fit.”

Such a statement not only suggests that we will see a more attacking approach from City, heightening the appeal of the likes of Milner and Tevez, but also that both Kolarov and Boateng have key roles to play in his future system. This would not only hint that these two look likely first choice options at the full-back positions, but also that they will be given the freedom to provide an attacking outlet.

Both Kolarov and Boateng have stalled as prospects due to injury, but both are now close to kick-starting their City careers. Boateng has started the previous two matches and would now see installed at right-back. Kolarov meanwhile has returned to training and could be in line for a return against Blackpool a week on Saturday.

While Boateng has the likes of Micah Richards and Pablo Zabeletta as competition for the right-back role, Kolarov will have to see off the challenge from an out-of-position Joleon Lescott and in the long-term, the threat of Wayne Bridge. To my money, the Serbian looks to have the more secure role as a result. Kolarov is also arguably the bigger threat to opponents – possessing a hammer of a left-foot which will surely fire in efforts on goal if he is afforded the freedom and room to explore the opponents half.

Kolarov is currently priced at 5.7 in the Fantasy Premier League game, with Boateng at 5.8. They would both present a route to City’s strong defensive potential which has, to this point provided 4 clean sheets. Whether Mancini’s new system and tactics will lessen their defensive resolve is something we can only speculate on. However, it’s clear that both Kolarov and Boateng are firmly in his the City manager’s plans as not only key defenders, but also major components in a new approach which may well see City unshackles themselves as an attacking force.

If you feel the need for further research, you can of course read our full Scout Reports of Kolarov and Boateng carried out in the pre-season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Had a discussion about this last night, and I've now come to the conclusion that increasing value is more important than getting points early in the season. Controversial maybe, but I have reasons.

Points will come if you make good selections, good selections mean an increase in value. You'll want to be able to afford the best players at the best price, because it's so tough to make a good side with the budget, especially this year. A team with a value of 105 WILL beat a team with a value of 102 over the season barring transfer hits.

The only way that the team with 102 value can triumph is by choosing hidden gems, and when that happens, the team value will increase, and both teams are then on similar values.

The thing is, it is significantly harder to consistently pick out hidden gems than jumping on bandwagons. Ideally, you can do a bit of both, but the focus early in the season should be about increasing your squad's value. Having a high team value gives you more flexibility, and really, when the going gets tough later on, you'll want to be able to call on all the funds you've painstakingly saved.

There will be times when you've jumped on a bandwagon too early and it crashes due to injury, but for the most part, you're working towards getting a squad that will be able to compete with the other high value teams, because if you get left behind there, you won't be able to catch up unless you can consistently see in advance that players like Chris Brunt will score a hat-trick against Liverpool.

    Thoughts?

I'm thinking the high value teams will have a advantage come January when most will be playing their second wildcard. We shall probably still see near-identical teams though - a 0.5 difference will equate to a couple of upgraded defenders - not much more.

I did that last season, but came back to bite me cause even though I had some serious money to buy all the key players, the large majority of them were injured, which meant that everybody ended up picking up the same players and had to scrounge around for gems...

so although I agree with you, I would temper that approach with the above warning...

Maybe in previous years where there have been some expensive players who have brought in the points. But only one 10+ mid is in the top 10 point scoring mids (ok 2, Gerrard just sneaks in) and 2 10+ forwards in the top 10. There are two less-than-5m defenders in the top 5 list so far.

Fabregas will hopefully get going, but there is no dominant big money player (Lampard, Ronaldo) this year, so I think it's looking like value is not too important.

Drogba, Malouda, Tevez, Fabregas aren't cheap. They are most people's predicted top 5 scorers this season right?

Big difference between Malouda at 9.5 and Ronaldo at 14.0. There's also only a couple of mids 6.5-8.5 worth getting, and only Bent in the 6.5-9.0 forwards, so you can easily budget for those big names with cheapies.

Don’t agree – seen plenty of teams last season in the top 50 with values of 104/105 at the end of the season (whereas the higher value teams were at 109 or more)

It helps but it isn’t that important

Yeah but how many of the higher value teams took big point hits for transfers? If you can get a team value that high without point hits, you're doing something very right, and most likely, you have a pretty darn good team.

Ah... Might not have made myself clear.

I'm not suggesting taking point hits for transfers. Just that you should jump on bandwagons early to get price rises even at the risk of injury.

The argument last night was that you should not get Van Der Vaart until the day before the next gameweek in case he got injured. I argued that a 0.2 increase in value is more important than potentially losing those points.

        +1

it helps avoid the situation where you want a player in but are 0.1m shy and have to wait a week to get him in but having too much isnt neccesary has loads of bargain players who will envitable do well.

Just basically enought money to chop and change not neccesasry to get the most expensive players.

Missing out on samba and nani last few weeks explains it all for me but then i didnt have most of price risers from the start.

I did say "early in the season". Of course, the main aim is to get the most points, but you need to have the money to be able to do that. We'll see who comes out on top at the end of the season, and how much team value factored in.

You are correct that good selections will increase your teams value over the course of the season .
The extra £`s may help future selections easier but a higher valued team wouldn`t necessary mean it would beat a cheaper squad coz picking the right (c) & strongest scoring XI definately helps ( have cocked this up several times so far including having Carroll as 3rd sub when he scored 17 )
I`ve stick to a no hit policy which served me well a few seasons ago .

I totally agree with the no hit policy.

I'm not suggesting spending points just to increase team value. What I'm saying, is that jumping on early bandwagons to increase value is better than waiting the night before making transfers so that you don't "lose potential points" if there's an injury. It's worth risking an injury to get a 0.2 increase.

But if you're not taking points hits, you're using your very precious single free transfer hopping on a bandwagon to chase last week's points. I just can't see that this is a good strategy.

Well I guess I'll be chasing last week's points for a while then. If it means I get a price rise and a potentially great player, it'll be worth it. Trying to pick a hidden gem, like a truly hidden one (Walcott for GW 2), is really hard, and more times than most, bandwagons take off with good reason. Obviously, you've got to be smart with which bandwagons you get on, but keep climbing aboard, and a few of them will carry you somewhere.

In any case, you can get off early, and at worst, you can still pocket a price rise. It's safer and will likely score you more points than if you took a "I'm not getting Van Der Vaart, everyone has him, I'll get Steven Pienaar instead, he's a hidden gem, no one knows him and he's got better fixtures" approach.

In theory it's a great idea, but in theory you don't have players injured, suspended, out of favour with their manager, or turn out to be plain rubbish.

You're doing very well so far, and so perhaps you can afford for your transfer strategy to be determined just by chasing value. Believe me, it's not the case for everyone...

That's true enough. Maybe I'll have to take a point hit here and there for injuries that just screw up the balance of the team, but I'm going to continue using my transfer strategy to chase value whenever possible.

So far, I've transferred in Malouda, Nani, Bale, Konchesky, Walcott to chase value. Walcott and Konchesky were mistakes, but the other three I consider a success. Bale might not have scored particularly well, but he gave me 0.2 profit which has helped me get Van Der Vaart in this week with my WC.

      Found this thread quite interesting

Ive "progressed" (perhaps that's not the right word) my team on the make some cash and buy Galacticos ethos so far and I'm sort of regretting it now.

I was doing fairly well last season until I realised I could cash in and pick an attacking dream team, thanks to Rooney and Febregas and Torres injuries that sort of fell apart.

But glutton for punishment Ive done it again, I'll go into the next GW with Drogba, Rooney, Torres, Febregas, Van der Vaart (granted it has the potential for Huge returns, but just a couple of injuries absolutley cripples your team and the potential for "value growth" pretty much grinds to a halt as people tend to Jump from one big name to another meaning if one of your players rise another drops).

It also leaves very limited transfer options for the rest of your side and also turns you into a bit of a lazy manager as far as your form / fixture assessments.

I agree in the sense that yes, you build your team around several quality key players early and stick w/them so long as they're not injured or way out of form (i.e. rooney). You look for the early buys and/or right sells w/their given form to boost team value, that can make the difference whether you can snag and afford players at the right time.

I'm happy to have bought the likes of Carroll and Adam from gw 1 and even Arteta as I think he'll be a consistent long term midfielder that will reach back up to his start value of 8.5. Also happy that I got Elmander early as he's been in good form and see him as the primary goal threat for Bolton this season.

My only two big mistakes that have costed me early in team value were Malouda and Drogba. I should have gotten them much earlier, but never liked the idea of having three players from one team unless it's a double and they're a top 5 side. But seeing as though they'e relatively stable players that you won't really be rotating out and build your team around, I'm not too upset about it.

For me the real dilemma in fantasy terms is avoiding bias based on the team you support. As a United supporter it really hurt having to drop Rooney so early for Drogba and stack my team w/Chelsea players. This is also part of the reason why I never really have any Liverpool players other than a defender at most. Part of why I did so poorly last season (other than being a rookie), was because I refused to have Lampard on my team as I can't stand him.

I find that the people who do best in fantasy are those who aren't die hards for any particular team and just like watching all of the games for what they are. My apologies for the lengthy post- sometimes it's necessary to clear the air and speak your mind.

Glad to hear your take on it.

I'm actually a huge Rovers fan, but I don't think that inhibits me at all in my team selections. The only thing I insist upon is having at least one Rovers player in my team. I also don't hate any footballer per say, so I can pick the likes of Nani, Drogba, Barton without feeling bad. They're just players for a team, and in fantasy football, numbers on a screen.

Try your best to be impartial, and don't get attached to a player. If a player starts going through a rough patch, and doesn't look like he'll come out of it anytime soon, get rid of him. It doesn't matter that they scored 20 points in the last 3 games, that they've come through for you in the past, if everything points to him being a bad choice, get rid of him.

He's not lazy at all, just smarter and more methodical than your avg. player, especially for a forward. Part of why he gets such criticism is because he's not your prototypical forward. In terms of his vision and skill, I like to compare him to a next generation Bergkamp. He's that same type of player as a forward- more playmaking and enjoys the art of the pass up front in tight situations. Obviously nowhere near his kind of accomplishments or overall class yet as Bergkamp is a legend, but has the potential. One reason why Henry was so great was because of Bergkamp next to him.

Evening all..stuck working in the lib but wanted to see if anyone has opinions on these changes..Im considering doing them soon as it would leave me with nothing in the bank!

    Torres-Elmander
    Bale-Fabs
Dempsey-Arteta (also consideedr VDV and Zog...)

It would be a 4 point hit which I want to avoid, but if I go for Arteta I need to go soon as one of the three Im getting in will rise...or Bale maybe fall?

Plus...if do Zog instead of Arteta or Odemwingie instead of Elmander I will have enough to upgrade Kochesky to Kalorov...a poser!

          I've two free, thinking either:
          1) Torres & Cleverley > Fabs & Elmander
          Or
          2) Torres & Malouda > Fabs & Tevez

Ive gone back and forth on which one, basically wether I want Tevez or Malouda, cant have both if I want Cole Nani Fabs Drogba (which I do!) I'm leaning more to 1) at the moment but who knows, I've got a real feeling Elmander will come up with the goods in the next few weeks.

EA reset the world leader boards today becasue people were still using the flag glitch cheat, it's now fixed

So everyones online points and skill level reset to level 1 & 200 points.

Where is the PS3 scout league I'll get in the mixer?

It started in fifa10, if you changed your nationality to a tiny country with less than a certain amount of users you got the win and an obscene amount of points no matter the result.

i.e. when you play a flag glitcher you usually batter them 5 or 6 nil because they shouldn't be at your level (28 in my case) but they will take around 100 points off you and get the win.

It started happening again on fifa11 after they thought they had fixed it so they properly fixed it and reset eveyones points and they leader board.

When you up for a game then?

Hi guys, planning transfers over the next couple of weeks. Any thoughts would be kindly received.
for GW8: Malouda > Nani, Torres > Elmander (no points hit)
    for GW9: Figs > A.Cole
for GW10: Dempsey > Cesc, Givet > Simpson (4 point hit)
for GW11: Hahnemann > Carson, Konchesky > Kolarov (4 point hit)

    too many hits?
Alternatively I could use WC in GW10, in which case I would bring Tevez in now rather than Elmander

          Yep of course.
The name of the league is ScoutLeague and the password is ffscout. I think so far there are only
          Me (Real Madrid)
          Akers (Man Utd)
          Jamsie P (Chelsea)

Another chap called James said he would join on later as Arsenal as well. There are spaces for 10 with each team playing each other 4 times. So far I think only one game has been played where thanks to an own goal and a 90th min winner I beat Jamsie P 2-1 🙂

I'm pretty sure I don't need to be on for people to play their matches, although I'm not a 100% on that.

Yep, sorry. I took a while to get used to the finishing as well, once you get that sorted you'll be fine.

The scores were very flattering for me, the first two games (especially the second) were very close.

Myself and Attila had some epic games....

First one was a 3-3 thriller, Essien scored a screamer for me in the 85th minute, similar to that goal he scored against the Gooners.

Then I made some tactical adjustments, designed to stifle the creativity of Ozil and Ronaldo, which lead to a 0-0 stalemate at the Bridge.

Final game, Attila scored an injury time winner to win 2-1.. Couldn't believe it, so quit...

Like the game though, big improvement on the previous year's game.

Nice post match analysis there Jamsie, that first game in particular was a stormer. Seems like there are a few more characters in the league, I wont be able to get back to it until later in the evening - the missus and her mate have monopolised the telly and I've 5-a-side from 9.30-10.30.
By the way was that 0-0 a league match as well?

Yeah it was a league match... So I've already blown my quota of games against you!! Should have got some early practice in before that... Rookie error.

I was livid with the Mikel OG. One of your players blocked him off when he was trying to get across to Ozil, and then after that it was just classic FIFA madness in the 6 yard box.

I also never seem to get any free-kicks or penalties. Must be some sort of bug. 😉

Im surprised people are thinking of turning bale in, granted his points returns have been poor for 4 weeks running but the number of key passes he's attempting per game, its just a baron spell.

      "just a barren spell"?

Nobody is saying he isn't good. It's just that points matter, and if someone else can bring them in, who isn't having a barren spell, why not? Bales price could plummet soon if VdV scores again and Bale gets nothing. It's not impossible to buy him back later should things turn around...

Oh yes, something like that, there was a great segment on him on either MOTD or Premier Soccer Saturday, can't remember which, he seems a capable manager and he should recognise Albrighton's skill, but who knows?

    My team is:
    Jaask
    Jones Enrique O'Shea
    Malouda Nani Bale Barton
    Drogba Tevez Berbatov(c)
    Subs: Foster Cleverley Faye Alex
    0.2 in bank
    I have two free transfers

    I'm thinking:
Alex --> Salcido Coleman Elmohamady (which one?)
    and possibly
    Bale --> Van der Vaart
    any suggestions?
should I hold onto to one free transfer?
