Six Premier League matches, not a single clean sheet. Can someone at the FPL approve a 1-7-3 formation?

We went into Saturday’s matches with United facing West Brom at fortress Old Trafford, Arsenal up against a Birmingham side low on confidence and without Cameron Jerome, Newcastle hosting a goal-shy Wigan. It didn’t look too much to ask to expect at least one clean sheet from that lot.

Instead investors in Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Tim Krul, and the one-week budget offer that is Johan Djourou, were left empty handed. Arsenal’s fragility was again exposed, this time by the towering Nikola Zigic, Van der Sar uncharacteristially blundered two points against Di Matteo’s refreshingly cavalier Baggies, and Newcastle were undone by a proper Charile N’Zogbia performance.

As this is typed the league’s best defence is largely unoccupied, while Chelsea’s midfield dominate the second period at Villa Park. Perhaps Carlo Ancelotti’s side will once again be the Fantasy Manager’s saving grace?

Then we have Man City to come on Sunday as they hop on the bus to Blackpool. They can expect waves of attack at the seaside; the word “cagey” doesn’t exist in the Blackpool vocabularly and I can’t see Holloway involving himself in a game of chess with the cultured Roberto Mancini. City won’t have it easy then, but maybe they can join Chelsea as the two continue to run away with the clean sheet count.

Aside from that pair of defensive dependables, Fantasy Managers are left scratching for returns at the back. The trend towards mid-price or cheap defensive options who can offer the threat of attacking points – Seamus Coleman of Everton, Elmohamady of Sunderland, Chris Samba of Blackburn and perhaps Gary Cahill of Bolton, is surely set to continue.

Can anyone really back the Arsenal defence until Thomas Vermaelen returns from injury? Do we expect Untied to travel to Stoke or indeed, to host Spurs the Gameweek after, and keep them at bay? Not even the mid-price defences, who have provided a modicum of efficiency in previous seasons – Aston Villa, Stoke, Birmingham, Fulham – seem to provide any real potential that can be relied on.

Find me a defender out of position or at least one who can offer a real threat from set-plays. After today’s heavy load of dirty laundry, I’m beginning to give up on the hunt for clean sheets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Tevez has toiled non-stop to lead City into second place in the Barclays Premier League table but manager Mancini is aware he will need to take a breather if the dynamic striker is to keep up that pace all winter.

The Blues now kick off another demanding three-game spell at Blackpool tomorrow, and City's boss could rest Captain Carlos for Thursday's Europa League tie with Lech Poznan before Sunday's visit by Arsenal.

Mancini said: "I will wait until Sunday morning and then I will speak with Carlos and we will decide. Out of the three games, there will probably be one for which Carlos will stay on the bench, because he needs to recover."

The Blues boss will also appeal to Argentina coach Sergio Batista to excuse Tevez from the squad he will name next month to play great rivals Brazil in a Doha friendly on November 17, five days before City's trip to Fulham.

Mancini said: "It's a problem for Carlos. Argentina don't play games in Europe, but in Japan, Australia, Brazil ... this makes it difficult for a player. Carlos arrived back on Thursday, tired. He needs to recover.

Rest him for Poznan please, Mancini.

Actually no, that's probably exactly what he'll do. No way he's going to have Arsenal coming to City with Tevez not on the pitch, wearing the armband. He should be involved tomorrow (difficult to say in what capacity), then I'd say it's very likely he'll be rested for the Euros, to be ready for Arsenal on the Sunday.

If it was a lesser game maybe he'd rest him in the league, but he'll want him against Arsenal.

For sure. If he is going to sit out one of the three it makes sense that it would be the one in the middle (and arguably the easiest of the three games), especially as the Arsenal game is 3 days after the Europa tie

I'm very tempted to bank my cash and jump ship. Did anyone on here watch the whole spurs game today? Can't garner much from a few minutes of footage on MOTD, and if he looked as lively and electric as he did earlier in the year, then I'm tempted to keep him in...

He scored the other day in the champions league...

I just cant help but think that the day I get him out is the day he gets a brace and everyone goes "oh shit, that's why I had him in!"

        Do you mean unlucky?!

Squillaci wasn't offside for his goal, and someone (Djourou I think) missed a sitter from a Nasri cross. Plus Nasri was infinitely better than Maroune '3BPs' Chamakh today, and should have got more than 1 BP.

I actually think that is a penalty anyway. Despicable dive from Chamakh, but Dann does clip his foot, and is nowhere near the ball.

P.S. I wasn't being serious anyway. I hope you know that....

Much the same from me, choose between Berbs and Nani and go from there. There's no obvious quick fix unless you swap for Fab but you'll want him from gw10 provided he's fit.

          Not for a while Torres.

It's about getting Fabregas back in. That's more important than Malouda, whose returns have dried up of late.

Of course, if he's starting against Wolves, he's going nowhere.

There's logic in that train of thought.

I might take a hit just to get Malouda in for a week if I know he will start. Need Gerrard to do well as he probably should have been sold instead when it comes to team value etc.

Yeah, Malouda could really tear it up at home to Wolves.

But if he's not playing and Kalou is then that's a different story. Kalou might be used in the CL in midweek, but that seems less likely than a routine league game at home to a struggling side.

i can understand why bale's assist wasn't given, even if it was remarkably similar to hart's rogue assist the other week. but i am really struggling to see how kevin davies got an assist. the stoke defender gets a tackle in which then deflects off lee's shin and into his path for him to score. there was an occassion last season where berbatov got an assist where despite a tackle coming in he was deemed to still be in possesion of the ball. on that occassion the defender got a pretty weak toe in, this time the stoke defender slides in and gets the ball, even if the tackle simply went straight to lee again.
basically i think davies' assist was very dodgy

Apple, I thought of the Hart assist when I saw the Bale corner today. It's the same thing, surely? I can't see how the FPL can't rule Bale's as not an assist. The precedent's been set.

exactly either give both or give neither. bale was trying to pick out huddlestone and his corner was heading straight to him, the defender got a slight head to it but only managed to alter the height of the ball slightly, not the direction at all.
just watched the davies one again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4doXc0q49tU

The rules should be straightforward on this.

If there's any kind of deflection, no matter how (in)significant, no assist.

That might be harsh but at least it'd be fair. There's a huge grey area the FPL are dancing around in now.

Is it sensible to have 2 top strikers & 1 back up or can you get away with a top midfield & 1 top striker?

Only i've got Tevez, Drog & Carrol at the moment. Looking at the stats Tevez has 1pt more than Elmander & is £5m more expensive.

If i took Tevez out I could do Malouda > Fab, Bale > Nani & Ethers > Arteta

I could then have a main mid 4 of Nani, Fab, Arteta, VdV & still keep A. Cole & Drogba

    Thoughts?

Keep in mind, Tevez has played one less game than Elmander, and many expect tomorrow to be a very big day for him.

That said, MANY people do your strategy, with one big striker, an all around great midfield, and Ashley cole, and it seems to work very well.

Your idea totally works, but I think Tevez is a keeper, and will hardly be comparable to Elmander as the season goes along.

I captained Tevez this week so i'm one of those expecting (hoping for) a big score from him tomorrow.

The point about him hardly being comparable to Elmander at the end of the season is a very good one. I may look at where else i can free up some cash.

I was looking at a potential replacement for Tevez in GW10 (mainly to afford Fabregas back) and quite a few teams have back to back home games. Arsenal, Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton, Fulham and United to be exact so may look to one of those. My (very) shortlist consists of Dembele and Elmander/Davies at the mo

Yeah me too. Wigan and Villa looks a little easier than Liverpool and Tottenham plus Dembele seems to catch the eye of the bonus judges (see the ridiculous 3BPs he got at Ewood Park for evidence of that!) although saying that Elmander has been picking up regular BPs all season.

the temptation is there but remember you are transferring out a fit player. with sundays' games and a round of champions league/europa league games to come, plus flu/virus inducing weather it's too risky for me

Really hope so, we've had the hardest fixtures in the entire league so far and we find ourselves in 6th. Would be typical of us though to start to lose now we start playing the likes of Blackpool, Wigan etc.

Can see why most think we will stay up easily and even why our own fans are confident but having seen us yo-yo for the past 8 years I still won't get to optimistic until we have 40 points!

wasn't sure about the match of the day comments saying scholes and giggs have been united's 2 star performers this season. a mr nani and berbatov have more than pulled their weight too. scholes seems to still be living off the community shield and first 3 to 4 games

Can see why their struggling though if some of their 'better' performers so far can't play every game and are approaching the end of the career. Really do fancy Man City to finish above them this season.

Ahh, i hate this frustrating feeling that fpl brings! I have 11 points in the figure of Brunt sitting on my bench, and chose to play Kolo instead of him!! Now I have to hope Jones doesn't play (maybe Emerton or Dunn will play instead of him, please!), Coleman, or Kolo get rested.

    Sigh.

I'm also thinking about getting rid of Arshavin, thinking bout Ireland or Arteta. Thoughts? Prob leaning towards Arteta but Ireland at times looked reminscent of Man City vintage today.

Yeah it's a very faint hope. Jones has been pretty good this season, so I think he'll prob start.
Even Coleman is very likely to start, the only threat comes from Billy. I really wanted to put Brunt in my team but went for the sensible move instead!

He's been a casualty of the way we've been playing (and to some extent Dunn being out). Kalinic is being flanked by the two Dioufs and then it is a central 3 which has usually been Pedersen, Jones, N'Zonzi/Grella. Olsson excelled on the left of midfield when we played 4-4-1-1 with Dunn off a lone front man. The 4-3-3/4-5-1 we've been playing recently doesn't suit him plus El-Hadj has our most consistent attacking player recently on the left wing.
