Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

Two entertaining games saw seven goals scored, El Capitan for many Carlos Tevez striking a brace and Liverpool, in spite of the fillip of a completed takeover, continuing their terrible start to the season.

For many this weekends subplot was the captaincy debate – Tevez vs Nani. Overall Tevez (just) edged it with 12 points to Nani’s 10. If you didn’t captain either of them – awkward.

Bizarrely every one of the Sunday Knee Jerks’ that i’ve written have involved a Liverpool angle. For that reason, and given they still appear to be well and truely skewed on the pitch at the moment, I won’t harp on about how investment in Liverpool players at the moment seems nothing more than a complete folly. If the slipery slope were a theme park ride, Liverpool would be the spoilt kid pestering their parents to spend all day on it. Theories on how a change in owner would lead to a change in fortune on the pitch proved deluded. Liverpool were toothless and look a shadow of the team which came seventh last season – damning indeed. For every negative there is a possitive however, and from a Fantasy Football perspective this came in the form of the Toffees.

The consensus this season is that whilst the league table position would suggest Everton are struggling, performances have indicated otherwise. It was difficult to determine whether they were actually good today or whether Liverpool were just really really bad. Nevertheless there were bright sparks in the sign of Seamus Coleman who continued his fine recent form with an assist for the opening goal. Given Everton’s recent run of clean sheets, indication from manager David Moyes that Coleman has the right hand side of midfield as his own, his price (4.4 million on FPL) and the fact he’s out of position, the young Irishman is looking like a must for our Fantasy Football teams. Before we all run off to put him in our team however it is worth noting that Everton have a tricky away game at Tottenham in the offing but follow this with two home games and an away game to his former club Blackpool. Expect his price to rise in the near future.

The later kick off saw title contenders Manchester City travel to Bloomfield Road to take on Blackpool in only the Tangerines third home game since their return to the top flight. The key information to take from the Manchester City game was the reshuffle of the pack by City boss Roberto Mancini. Notable absences came in the form of  the Toure brothers who were no where to be seen either in the starting line-up nor on the bench. Whilst Yaya’s possible omission was noted in our Injuries and Ban’s section and didn’t come as a huge suprise, the absence of his brother was something of a shock. Yaya’s place was taken by the enigmatic Emmanual Adebayor who to be honest was pretty rubbish. At first the consensus was that the revertion to a 4-4-2 was exactly the right move for Manchester City. Certainly if they were to smash some of the lower level teams a more attacking mentality would need to be adopted rather than the continued three defensive minded central midfielders. How wrong that thought process was.

City continually laboured throughout the opening 70 odd minutes of the game with that formation, and it wasn’t until David Silva was brought on to replace the aforementioned Adebayor and the formation was tweaked that things turned round for the better for the Citizens.  Silva’s introduction saw an assist for Carlos Tevez’s opening (dubious) first goal and the Spaniard topped it off his influential cameo with an exquisite finish which turned out to be the winning goal. Unfortunately for Fantasy Football enthusiasts his place in the starting line up is far from guaranteed, however one mans place who is certain is Carlos Tevez and with 7 goals in 8 this season and 28 goals in his last 30 games for Man City its difficult to not try to find a way to get him into your team.

Apologies for the use of Ian Evat’s name in the title, bar the “foul”/tackle on him that led to Tevez’s second goal he really did nothing of note – i’m just a sucker for a pun.

Tevez is good, but Fabregas is more important. Save for him.

This is my team for this week, just wondering who to start any suggestions?

    cech, carson
    terry, konchesky, coleman, o'shea, richards
nani, gerrard, bale, de jong, adam
    tevez, berbatov, odemwingie

i thought of going with: cech, terry, konchesky, o'shea, nani, gerrard, bale, adam (c), tevez, berbatov and odemwingie

should i put coleman in for konchesky? what do u reckon???

      Uh...

      Your team needs some work.

I'd start with downgrading defense. Richards, O'Shea, Terry, and getting some money on Gerrard, Bale and De Jong.

Up front, you don't have Drogba, but it could still work if you get a really good midfield.

Your team for this week is right, but you need to start making some transfers or you won't be scoring many points!

I think there's a bit of moderation involved.

You have to make decisions, but other people can offer very good suggestions too that you shouldn't discount. Also, avoid getting attached. "I like Rooney, I don't care that everyone else says he's a bad buy, I think he'll come good" kind of mentality isn't going to get you anywhere. You've got to be ruthless. When players aren't performing, and you made a bad pick, just jump right off that ship. There's only time to look forward in this game.

Avoid getting attached, but also try not to be too jumpy. I've resisted a lot of Saturday night knee jerk transfers this season, and avoided dropping points as a result, and it's serving me well.

Also, play the fixtures, don't blindly transfer someone in on the back of a good week if they have a horrible run of opponents coming up. By the same token don't transfer out a player out who's served you well, and increased in value just because they have a couple of tough matches, take a deep breath and get through it!

For those who've not seen it yet, here's an article from todays Guardian about Rooney wanting out of Man Utd.

Could just be paper talk but sounds like his relationship with Ferguson has broken down pretty badly.

I have 11 players with home fixs next week and Albrighton and Carroll on the bench so I'm going to leave as is I think. I'm considering 4 changes for gw10 though for an 8 point hit. Wise? Which one is better?
Fabs, Nani, Simpson, Gilks for Gerrard, Larsson, Konch, Shwarzer or Fabs, Arteta, Colman, Gilks for same four.
I will have to keep an eye on price changes too though as I'm pushing my budget to the max.
Rest of my team is Foster/Mummy, Dann, Alcaraz, Baptiste
    Malouda, VDV/Drogba, Tevez.

What are you doing with players like Scholes, Larsson & Sagna in your team? Nani covers MU & you already have him. Stick to the basics & you will fix that rank up. Even Fran might be ahead of you.

TM is right, far too many risky choices in there.

Try and build a team with a core of Drogba, Tevez, Nani and Fabregas (GW 10) then get whoever the hell you want to go with them.

I've only got Larsson. Where'd you get Scholes and Sagna from? Larsson's cheap and on set pieces which brum score a lot from so I think he's a decent shout but now there are better prospects. If I do the changes I am proposing my team will be:
          Foster/Gilks,
Mummy, Dann, Alcaraz, (3.9mil defender and Baptiste)
          Fabs, Malouda, Nani, VDV, (Albrighton)
          Drogba, Tevez, Carroll
          Looks good no?

Sorry didn't realise it changed from year to year. All sorted no TM.
My defence is a bit cheap Cheggars which is why I was asking should I go for Arteta instead of Nani to allow me to get Coleman instead of a 3.9 defender to allow me the option to rotate. GW 10 fixtures Nani v Spurs, Arteta and Coleman v Stoke. But long-term Nani is the better prospect no? Or will Arteta start getting big points now Everton have got it together or did they just look good 'cos they were playing 'pool.

I've given up on Fabs for now.

I think a load of people on here are going to spend a load of money and a lot of squad changes to get in a player who is probably going to score you the same points most weeks as Adam, who is half the price and on a team that scores as freely as Arsenal.

Decided on Friday night that I'd go for Tevez instead for now. If I do get Fabs in it'll be for Malouda, but to be honest with you I'd say Cashley is a better player to spend your money on than Fabs.

I have Alex at the moment but am seriously thinking that I need Cole in my team. The guy scores as well as the top mids in this game and the bap judges love him.

Right now it just strikes me that Fabregas is the latest 'must have' based solely on his reputation. Be honest. Nothing he has done so far this season really justifies £11.8m does it?

Rooney and Lampard have left me wary of getting in big name players just because they're big name players.

I'd back Adam and Van der Vaart both to outscore him this season.

Cant agree! Got to go, but just to say, if Fabs is fit he'll outscore both of them-and I have VDV and Adam, so Im not bias, i think they will do well. He is the heart, total centre, of a top 4 side, I think if you look at the price of Drogs/Lamps, fabs is decent value!
I went for Tevez on Friday too, and glad I did, but when he's back fabs will be back for me, its just who for...its fun when decisions like this have to be made, you get different teams battling it out!

Injury history not good either. My point is that everyone on here immediately dismisses anyone who dares suggest that you might be able to build a good fantasy team without having him.

Well obviously, that is the nature of such predictions. But i think there is a fair bit of past form to back it up plus it helps being the best player in the league.

"And who is to say that Avram won’t try that tactic to nullify his threat?" And you don't think other teams have tried to "nullify his threat"? If it was that easy then every team would just nullify his threat wouldn't they lol

Arsenal this season are not the same team they were last season. The have a lot more options than they did last year when it was just Fabregas having to carry the team with a bit of help from Vermaelen and Bendtner.

The scouts even pointed this out early on in the season how Chamakh and Walcott have changed the dynamic of Arsenal's midfield.

They now have Walcott and Van Persie coming back, which now throws another spanner into the works.

I wouldn't be ditching Tevez just yet. If he puts a couple of games together of Nani-like proportions then fine, ball wash him till the cows come home.

But let's see that first before immediately rubbishing anyone on here who happens to think a degree of caution is wise before selling productive players, and passing up equally productive cheaper ones, in order to bring him in.

Could you imagine Rooney living in a foreign country?

United are skint, City are the only club who will pay silly money and they would take it, United are too broke to lose out financialy on this, the Glazers will over rule matters due to the financial situation.

Rooney walked out on his boyhood club, don't anyone kid yourself into thinking that he won't go City because of United.

As the kids say, mega lolz coming up.

Yes. Except that he's away to Spurs next week so I don't see a cleanie there.

Long term, Jagielka is probably a better buy. Cheaper than Baines, he'll benefit from Everton cleanies and is not a rotation risk when other players return, unlik Coleman.

I'm tempted by him, but my defence needs some stability now so I think I'm going to get Elmo in. The question is do I swap Shawcross or Konchesky.

My gut feeling is that Liverpool will play better, especially at home, so I may keep hold of Liverpool defender.

Shawx is a straight swap for me, although he's probably likely to score against Man Utd, their away defence is that bad.

The only sure thing in defence right now is Ashley Cole. But yeah, I wouldn't jettison out Liverpool defenders just yet.

Very few people scored well defensively this week, so avoiding the knee jerk on Saturday and Sunday night was important.

A load of people transferred Bale out on Saturday night. If they'd have left it a day they may have reconsidered it, especially as if got an assist and has a home game up next. They may still have gotten rid anyway, but who knows?

Hi nomar - good arguments up above. May I suggest that you look at Bramble instead of Elmohamady. I've had a good look at the stats in the members - he's classed as a midfielder(Al-Muhammadi) - and in fact there is no guarantee he'll get any attacking points at all, despite his position. What he is very good at, is winning the ball in the air - but Bent is likely to get the benefit of that - or Jordan Henderson. Bramble seems to manage 2 to 3 goals a season, plus occasional assists.

I’m considering 4 changes for gw10 though for an 8 point hit. Wise? Which one is better?
Fabs, Nani, Simpson, Gilks for Gerrard, Larsson, Konch, Shwarzer or Fabs, Arteta, Colman, Gilks for same four.

As far as I'm aware Drogs just had a bug and is back in full training, and Alex is rumoured to be in contention for Europe this week. I don't think either will miss the game through injury, but there's a chance they could be rested if either plays in Europe anyway.

I hope this Rooney talk about leaving is just contract negotiation tactics, surely he couldn't be that stupid to leave United when he is in the poorest form of his career and blame it all on SAF who he stupidly went against in that interview following the England game. In circumstances where SAF was protecting Rooney by saying he was injured it was retarded for Rooney to come out and say that he "didn't know" what Fergie was talking about when he spoke of his ankle injury.

Wayne, you are United, but wise up, do a few more hours on the training pitch, sign a new contract, and get on with it.
