A soggy 0-0, an injured Spaniard, an off the rails centre-forward and a bargain full-back. Monday brought a variety of notable events that had me scribbling…

There’s little to take from last night sodden stalemate, other than more evidence that Sunderland continue to be an impotent, ineffective force away from home. Steve Bruce mentioned in his post-match comments that his side were more accomplished before the dismissal of Chris Samba for hauling down Danny Welbeck; he was right. Down to 10 men, Blackburn showed defensive resolve and in Paul Robinson had a keeper inspired to repel the little that the Black Cats threw his way.

Sunderland have now won just 2 of 33 matches away from the Stadium of Light – at Bolton and Hull. Three consecutive draws and a defeat at West Brom have added to that record. Defensively they promoted themselves further as a source of Fantasy assets; the game brought a third clean sheet of the season and with that stat and his endeavours at Ewood, Elmohamady will continue to rise in popularity and price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Home comforts against Aston Villa in the coming Gameweek may even offer the opportunity for attacking returns from the “out of position” Egyptian.

As for Blackburn, they earned only their second clean sheet of the season and they did it with the normally reliable Samba showered in the stands. He will miss the trip to Anfield this weekend. As we will see later in our “Frisking of the Fixtures” article, that’s just one of a several tough-looking fixtures ahead of Samba and co, making Ewood a likely no-go area for Fantasy Managers for the foreseeable future, despite the return of former favourite David Dunn from the bench and the maximum FPL Bonus that came Paul Robinson’s way.

Mikel Arteta revealed yesterday that he was a doubt for Sunday’s Merseyside derby, a game which he illuminated with a superb long-range goal to seal the win. The Spaniard was withdrawn on 74 minutes with a recurrence of the injury

“I felt it again in the second half and I had to come off. We’ll have to look at it.”

That makes him an early doubt for the trip to White Hart Lane this weekend which will surely temper any Fantasy interest. Everton and Arteta have more appealing fixtures to come with Goodison encounters with Stoke and Bolton, with a trip to Blackpool sandwiched in between, over the Gameweek’s that follow.

I’m not sure what to make of Andy Carroll’s Monday morning. Charged with an alleged assault, the striker was bailed to go and live with club skipper Kevin Nolan. With Nolan having been “rested” by Chris Hughton for Saturday’s draw with Wigan, he’s likely to be in no mood for guests. Carroll is facing up to a court appearance next Monday on an alleged assault charge for “occasioning bodily harm” in a club last year. Then of course there was a previous incident involving team-mate Steven Taylor. All in all, it’s not a pretty picture and, switching to the trivialities of Fantasy Football for a while, his owners will be worrying whether Chris Hughton will put him out on the pitch at West Ham and what frame of mind he’ll be in if he does play.

Staying with Newcastle and you may have missed the tweet that brought you news of Danny Simpson being included in Newcastle’s reserves for this afternoon’s game with Bolton. If he’s spared the 90 minutes, that should give us all the indication we need that he will be likely to slot into Hughton’s defence at Upton Park. James Perch, Newcastle’s current right-back, came in for a round of criticism following the Wigan game making it seem inevitable that Simpson will get his opportunity eventually. The former United man is available for just 3.9 in the FPL – the cheapest price you can pay for a Defender. If he regains his starting role he will offer an excellent bench option which will free up much-needed funds elsewhere.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi guys,

Is Drogba a must? For example if i get Drogba my team will be
Fabregas Drogba Tevez Adam but if i dont i will have Fabregas Gerrard Berbatov and Tevez

Which will you have in the long run. ( I prefer Gerrard as less people have him and he can be my differential )

differentials are only good when they are scoring points and noone else has them. For his price tag Gerrard currently isn't scoring enough points, maybe in the future though.

i agree. get the core of vdv/malouda/nani/fabregas/drogba/tevez/a.cole/elmohamady then get cheap differentials around this.

my cheap differentials are n'zogbia/coleman/(simpson soon)/(odemwingie soon)

      Maybe Milner.

I don't think Milner is THAT bad. 4th highest scoring midfielder (although he is being beaten by someone that started at 5m). He's been a tad unlucky imo. Hit the bar against Blackpool and saw quite a few crossed in other games that just weren't converted.

I hate the emergency captain rule almost as much as I hate Marmite and the Go Compare bloke.

Why should the leader of the game get an extra 12pts (Tevez) for captaining Drogba? I know its to keep the masses happy as some of them don't check their teams for a while but surely the second wildcard addition was enough to appease that side of things.

Perhaps he did check his side and captained him just incase he played.

I played him (wouldn't have captained him anyway) knowing he was more than likely not playing but had my subs set up in the order I wanted them to come on.

So did I. I also know people who are clued up and captained him just for the hell of it because they knew he was not going to play. I have no issue with it this season, its the rules for now so thats the way we have to play it. I just really hope they change it next time round.

I guy in my league captained Drogba....the captaincy switched to Etherington on form and all his glorious 2pts. Some benefit, some do not. I agree though, I wish they'd scrap it...this would help those like us who play the game. If people don't check their teams they should be punished not rewarded.

...having said that I was one of those last year that benefited from that week Lampard came on as an auto captain with about a million pts. I wasn't quite so fascistic about the auto capt rule then.

wow you almost had a clean sweep of the key mega pts week captain choices.
I too had Tevez as captain that week where hardly anyone played. It was the start of a mega comeback for me from 300,000th odd in winter to my final tally of 11,000th.

I see that side of things Jonty, a rival of mine had his switch to Malouda for an extra 3pts so it helped in that sense.

I just think that if there is a 50/50 chance your captain doesn’t play, whether it be through injury or potential rotation, there is either a conservative approach to take or either a ballsy decision to make. If you keep someone as captain and he plays and it pays off then fair play – You enjoy the reward. But if he doesn’t then you shouldn’t get the ‘back up prize’ or someone else coming in.

I hope that overall though it will even out. My friend who saw the captain switch to Etherington deserved that poor luck, as his most expensive back up was Arshavin...it shows how much it pays to have at least two, maybe three good captain choices each week.

that's certainly why Nani, Tevez and Drogba take pride of place in my team.

Of course if it happened at the moment I would benefit. However, I’d rather we played a game where a big fat zero was the result – The potential is then there for bigger rises and falls in position.

          Glad to hear it.

Nah i see your point, it's just alot of people round here talk as if they deserve to do better than everyone else just because they come on here, or do more research - and some seem to get visibly annoyed when things don't go their way.

I personally think it's good that there is a failsafe for people who don't always have the time every week to sort their team out. In much the same way i find the idea of paying money to get ahead in the game (members section etc.) pretty much against the point of what the game is about.

In fact in the same way the BP's and the sense of entitlement some people have towards them. I think all these things contribute to making the game a bit more interesting.

Who will reap better fantasy points from gw 10 till gw 12

Bent or Berbatov. Currently my team has berbatov and not bent so i would be transferring out berbatov for bent if bent is likely to get more points.. so any advice guys ?

All the players are scared to play and give gerrard the ball waiting for him to unblock the situation. He needs to be further up to inspire that.

yeah if you take a 16pt hit how can you expect to get a good score? stop taking these hits. Make 1 change this week and then get fab in for wk 10. job done.

      1) dont panic
      2) dont get desperate 8 GW's in 🙂
      3) try to do 1 transfer a GW thinking long term
      4) start with the question "how do I get in Cesc for GW10 without further pts hits"

Hi guys need some solid astute advice for this one.

Who will reap better fantasy points from gw 10 till gw 12

Bent or Berbatov. Currently my team has berbatov and not bent so i would be transferring out berbatov for bent if bent is likely to get more points.. so any advice guys ?

    Bent has : Newcastle(a) Stoke (h) Tottenham (a)
Berbatov has: Spurs (h) Wolves(h) Man City (a)

Reposting as i didnt get a reply

I wouldn't say Berbatov is consistent. At least going by previous years. He's been doing ok recently but it's still yet to be seen if that will continue.

What do you think the answer is? (its Berbatov by the way) The answer may also be dependent on what other players are in your team (ie nani)

I have nani in my team so wouldn't need nani and berbatov as man united cover tbh. that was my thinking.

in your opinion. its carlos' that counts.

And he has already said he wants Bosingwa to bomb forward like Ash does on the left.
Bosingwa is a better RB than Ivanovic but Ivanovic is a better defender therefore, as has been suggested, it is easy to see a scenario where Bosingwa will play in the easier games and Ivanovic will play the tighter games.

I had Arteta early in the season but transferred him out the other week and have doubts of getting him back. It would have to be at the expense of Malouda/Fabregas/VDV/Nani so Malouda would be the one to make way...

Chelsea have some nice fixtures coming up too, so think I'll hold off on that move for now. If I had to select one then Cahill is better value.

Just for the craic, i was wondering who is the best FPL manager on the forum. what i've done is worked out the average final position over the years i've been playing. My average position was a pretty poor 38930. You must have played more that one year and not include your current position. Just add up all your final positions and divide by the number of years you have played. Who is the best of the best?

Good news for us new Simpson owners
    http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20101018/simmos-hot-to-trot_2281670_2188119
He's in a reserve match this afternoon and has declared himself fit for the trip to the Spam. Can't really add more to the news by Mark (above) but from last season he looks a good right back who will certainly get forward more than Perch and is a much better bet in that position. His goalscoring record is pretty paltry though. Good value at 3.9 in my opinion.

It was a little yes, still sort of feel I've sold the family cow for a few 'magic' beans. I just had to get Tevez though, he was the reason so many of my rivals in my private leagues were catching me. I'd had three poor weeks on the trot so seemed like a good idea at the time. It gives me this provisional lineup for Gw9
        Al Habsi
        Konchesky / Bosingwa / Elmo
        Nani / Malouda / VdV / Fabregas / Ferguson
        Tevez / Drogba
        Subs: Gilks, Jara, Varney, Simpson.
Which has more firepower than any North Korean mentalist could wish for 🙂

Don't really like the ultra bargin basement approach Attila, and Bos sounds like a bad idea to me.

It would look a lot better with Arteta and Brunt (say) instead of Mal and Ferguson.

Those magic beans may yet bear fruit.

Curious as to why you chose Bosingwa? He's a bit crap in the "rear gunner" dept.

Yep I know the risks of Bosingwa - he is a short term measure (unless by a miracle he suddenly becomes nailed on). From what I gather he is likely to start V Wolves where he should do well, after that game he will make way for either Kolarov/Boateng, Samba again (if I forgive him) Jagielka, or some other player around that bracket.
Been thinking about Arteta a lot, his ongoing hamstring injury worries me, so going to keep an eye on that.
Ferguson is a total shitter granted, but he often scores pretty well, I was considering getting Ameobi instead of Varney thus freeing up some extra £££ but that is simply replacing one problem with another. I think Ameobi will get much more pitch time in light of Carrolls ongoing tomfoolery but it isn't guaranteed enough to risk my 3rd striker slot on, whereas Varney is doing pretty well for Blackpool.
