Having started the campaign with two heavy defeats -conceding ten goals and scoring none- Wigan were marked by many as doomed for the drop even before August was finished. Add to the mix their star man, Charles N’Zogbia, was looking for a way out, and it’s fair to say the start of the season was something of a nightmare for those around the DW Stadium.

Two months on and Roberto Martinez has turned the club’s fortunes around impressively. Having subsequently tightened up at the back, Wigan have lost just one of their last six games and, over the last couple of games, are now starting to play again. The Latics found the net only twice in their first six games but have now netted two goals in each of their last two games, with N’Zogbia’s return to form being fundamental to the upswing in their attacking fortunes.

Whereas last season saw N’Zogbia used predominantly as an inside-out right winger, Martinez is utilising his talents on the winger’s natural left flank this time round, too. With Hugo Rodallega dropping to the bench last weekend at St James‘ Park, N’Zogbia played as a left-winger in Wigan’s 4-3-3 set-up and silenced the home crowd with a quickfire brace as Martinez’s side took the game to their hosts.

As the above passing heatmaps show, against Newcastle 90% of his passes came down the left hand side of the pitch at Newcastle whereas in Wigan’s previous game, the 2-0 home win over Wolves, it was near an even split as the Frenchman attacked Mick McCarthy’s side on both flanks. A third of his passes against Newcastle were in the final third, whereas two-third of all passes against Wolves were in the final third, showing just how much of a menace he is to the opposition.

Regardless of where he plays, however, N’Zogbia (number 10) -as these average position maps from the two aforementioned games illustrate- tends to be the further forward of Wigan’s players, and with other similarly priced midfielders Chris Brunt and Charlie Adam scoring similarly so far this season, this fact may swing the odds in his favour for those considering budget midfielders.

Of the four goals Wigan have scored in these two games, N’Zogbia has played a part in three of them, scoring two and assisting one, in a pair of performances that have seen him pick up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in both games. Having picked up 5 Fantasy League Points in Wigan’s first five games, N’Zogbia’s price has plummeted from £6m to £5.4m, but the winger has subsequently racked up an impressive 28 points in his last 3 games.

Wigan have something of a mixed bag of fixtures in their next six (BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun) but as he begins to replicate the form that saw him bag 5 goals, 7 assists and a fantastic 31 Bonus Points last season, Charles N’Zogbia is showing just how important he is to Martinez’s side as they continue to climb the league.

Tough one....but on current form I would edge it to VDV...I am going to bring him for Bale....Bale is decent, but has slacked off in recent weeks and VDV offers much more than Bale, effectively playing as second striker.

Go for VDV for now...but keep eye on Arteta...after a poor start, he seems to be getting into his stride now...

Telegraph game makes the question a lot more difficult though as he's down as a defender so even when out of form he has the chance of goals and clean sheets. Still tempted with Vdv though..

Looking at my team, I feel that I don't need to trade but I had 2 freebies so decided to take out useless Boyata and bring in bandwagon Seamus. I've still got Stevie G but will probably trade him out for Fab sooner or later.

    Cech (Carson)
Baines, A Cole, Vidic (Gohouri, Coleman)
Arteta, Yaya Toure, Gerrard, Nani (Adam)

Im having a really good look at my team and the big question thats shouting out at me is this. Is malouda worth keeping? He seems to represent a huge rotation risk and with his price almost certainly better spent on fabregas hes looking less appealing every day. Yes he inevitably will pop up and score a brace or get a few assists when chelsea are thrashing someone but for all the games in between and the games hes rested his price is just sitting there wasted. What does everyone else think? What are others doing in this position?

I'm wondering exactly the same thing. Most of us (I imagine) are trying to do the Fabregas shuffle in time for GW10, which for me either means a straight Malouda --> Fabs shift then, or a Tevez downgrade and an Etherington upgrade. Really don't know which way to go as my main rivals have Malouda, and it would cost me about .5m to get him back, but at the same time his fixtures are a bit stiff.

In short, I have no idea 🙂

Fair question, but Malouda is staying in my team. I see him as a "must have" and is now Chelsea's star midfielder (ahead of the fading Lampard) The fact he plays effectively as a striker seals it for me.

In fact, when Chelsea are at home, it is a real decision whether I captain him or Drogba....

So, keep him ! Better VFM than Cesc too !

What do people think to this as my WC team?

    Robinson /Mignolet
    Bosingwa/Coleman/Elmohamady/Jara/Simpson
    Fabregas/Van der Vaart/Nani/N'Zogbia/Albrighton
    Drogba/Berbatov/Tevez

My main issue in fact is whether it's sensible to WC now or hold on (my current team is linked and is not too bad at mo although plenty I'd like to do). If I wait, I suspect I'll never be able to afford the proposed WC team given price rises etc

    Do you think it's worth:

    1. doing WC now
    2. holding on to WC

I've dropped Carroll personally. I think his off field antics will have a knock on effect on his appearances. I think this is the third or even fourth assault case against him, plus if Hughton persists with the 4-4-2 his role will be diminished. He was a good pick as the lone targetman everything went through him, now he has to share that role. Plus Ameobi has impressed in each of his appearances so far so he might start taking starts off him.
Carroll, Barton, Bowyer, Dyer, Woodgate - we sure know how to pick 'em!

Well it was to stop the Tevez led slide (three poor gameweeks on the trot). I'm just annoyed really that I was experimenting by taking Malouda out (had him since week 1) then later that evening went to put him back in and he cost 10.4! Seems unfair to me, they should have an undo option before the next deadline.

Yeah that rule is irritating. I have been toying with the idea of Malouda - VDV to allow me to upgrade ferguson to adam and spend an extra 1m on a defender but want to wait and see if Malouda plays this weekend.

Cole is likely to rise tonight,

I can't decide whether to keep Malouda or swap out Malouda for VDV and get A.Cole in defence

Keep Malouda gives me (from GW10)

    Malouda / Adam / Fabs / Nani / Coleman / O'Shea / Elmo

If I get rid it would be VDV instead of malouda and A.COle instead of O'Shea.

Er...please read what I said carefully....I did NOT say Walcott will out-score Cesc in fantasy points (who would say such a thing ?!)...

What I said is that Walcott will score more GOALS in reality than Cesc over the season....Walcott has 4 already, compared to one for Cesc....and before you say "Cesc has been injured" so has Walcott ! 🙂

I just KNEW someone would mis-read what I clearly said...so, time for YOU to wak up Jenas ! 🙂

My point is this....bearing in mind the cost of players, I will have Walcott + Drogba over a Cesc + K Davies combination ANY DAY 🙂

woo you're quite the comedian. Just one problem though, I didn't say he was going to score more points either, all I said was outscore.

Pedantary aside, Walcott isn't going to take a first team spot of Nasri any time soon, so it's a bit of a silly move. And I stand by more point that it's foolish to suggest Walcott will out-score, as in the scoring goals out-score, Fabregas. Fabregas scored 15 or 16 last season, whereas Walcott has only hit double figures in one of his childrens books.

Well, we have to wait and see. As a Gooner myself, I believe Walcott will be reinstated on the right-wing and play many matches - yes, there is rotatation-risk, but I still think he will play a fair share or games.

Despite his form, it is Nasri who will suffer the most with the return of Cesc...as he has effectively been playing the Cesc role in his abscence. However much a good player Nasri is, Walcott has it over him in terms of pace, goals and attacking mindedness.

And...to clarify...I really do believe Walcott will score more goals come the end of the season than Cesc. Despite his brilliance, I have never regarded Cesc as a reliable goal-scorerer....indeed, he can go for many matches without scoring. Hardly a Lampard or Gerrard in terms of goals. Where Cesc DOES come good is his assists, set-pieces and bonus points...

...whereas Walcott will effectively be a "third" striker - right wing - supporting Chamakh / RVP, with Arshavin doing the same role on the left.

I do not claim to be a comedian either ! My last point was serious, in saying "yes...to have Cesc is good...but the value Walcott brings means you can have say a Walcott AND Drogba rather than a Cesc and say K Davies for the same price."

It really is that simple and logical Jenas.... 🙂

LOL, the local paper in wolves is reporting Christophe Berra is going to be our captain for the trip to stamford bridge.

Starting to lose faith in McCarthy, dont know why he spent 6m+ on injured hunt and mouyokolo. he is playing fletcher in right midfield as well. Cricket score on saturday with no craddock or henrry

Who is best third striker ?
    No, not Carroll !
    No, not Odemwingie !
    ...
It is Varney to my opinion
Frees up some most needed cash for midfield and defense with a very descent regular return.

I started out really well, but have been backsliding three consecutive weeks largely due to Tevez and an atrocious defence. My midfield is weakened somewhat but my lineup for GW9 is now
              Al Habsi
              Konchesky / Bosingwa / Elmo
Nani / Fabregas / VdV / Boa Morte
              Berbatov / Tevez / Drogba
              Subs: Gilks, Adam, Tamas, Simpson

I plan on selling Bosingwa pretty quick as I dont think he will be regular enough to sustain the money, I will get the likes of P.Jones and beef up Boa Morte who is only in for West Ham's upcoming kind fixtures.

bosingwa will be a liability soon.. get nzogbia in for boa morte and coleman in for bosingwa if u want a defender with great potential who may not start.. the only reason i can see u goin for bosingwa is cause u panicky u dont have malouda or a.cole as chelsea coverage.. bosingwa and boa morte will burn u imo.. oh sorry.. u dint ask for advice:)

Bosingwa is very likely to start against Wolves, I anticipate he will do well in that game. As I stated above I will sell him pretty quick (unless he suddenly becomes nailed on for Chelsea) and get the likes of Samba, Jagielka or perhaps Coleman if he keeps his place. Boa Morte will then be upgraded, but he is a good pick for the next GW

    Hi guys

In free fall in the rankings at the moment... I need some restructuring!

I will do Shawcross to Coleman to release to some cash.

Then I need to sell over the next two weeks:
    -Davies to Adam or NZogbia
-Gerrard to Fabregas (maybe after this weekend only given fixtures)

Adam is key to everything at Blackpool and a bonus magnet + fixtures are kind.
On the other side, NZogbia is coming back strong and sharp for a very discounted price. Wigan's fixtures, as Mark said, are ok'ish.

I am leaning towards NZogbia because WIgan will do better that Blackpool overall. However I don't like him as a person and I fear he might try to escape during the winter transfer period creating another phase of chaos with Martinez.

    Any opinion?
    NZogbia or Adam
Fabregas this week or next week?

    Cheers

bale played left midfield for the first time in a while on saturday. if 'arry keeps him there i will keep hold of him, but if he plays bale in defence when rvdv plays then 6.7m is a bit pricey for a left back. what do others think???

He will continue to play left midfield, BAE had a decent game, no reason for 'Arry to drop him, especially with all the other defensive injuries we have at the moment. Hold out on any Spurs transfers until after tonights match, anyway.

Van der Vaart without a doubt. Bale is still a good player, however he is reliant on Spurs's misfiring strikers whereas VdV is a greedy swine who shoots on sight

Yep...however good a player Bale is (and he is) VDV offers more as he is playing up front effectively. If Bale was still marked down as a defender I may well stick with him for clean sheet points, but now he is midfield that "bonus" no longer applies.

Indeed, the real risk over Bale is if Harry puts him back at LB....

So...if you can afford it, I would say the chip-up to VDV is well worth it
