Having started the campaign with two heavy defeats -conceding ten goals and scoring none- Wigan were marked by many as doomed for the drop even before August was finished. Add to the mix their star man, Charles N’Zogbia, was looking for a way out, and it’s fair to say the start of the season was something of a nightmare for those around the DW Stadium.

Two months on and Roberto Martinez has turned the club’s fortunes around impressively. Having subsequently tightened up at the back, Wigan have lost just one of their last six games and, over the last couple of games, are now starting to play again. The Latics found the net only twice in their first six games but have now netted two goals in each of their last two games, with N’Zogbia’s return to form being fundamental to the upswing in their attacking fortunes.

Whereas last season saw N’Zogbia used predominantly as an inside-out right winger, Martinez is utilising his talents on the winger’s natural left flank this time round, too. With Hugo Rodallega dropping to the bench last weekend at St James‘ Park, N’Zogbia played as a left-winger in Wigan’s 4-3-3 set-up and silenced the home crowd with a quickfire brace as Martinez’s side took the game to their hosts.

As the above passing heatmaps show, against Newcastle 90% of his passes came down the left hand side of the pitch at Newcastle whereas in Wigan’s previous game, the 2-0 home win over Wolves, it was near an even split as the Frenchman attacked Mick McCarthy’s side on both flanks. A third of his passes against Newcastle were in the final third, whereas two-third of all passes against Wolves were in the final third, showing just how much of a menace he is to the opposition.

Regardless of where he plays, however, N’Zogbia (number 10) -as these average position maps from the two aforementioned games illustrate- tends to be the further forward of Wigan’s players, and with other similarly priced midfielders Chris Brunt and Charlie Adam scoring similarly so far this season, this fact may swing the odds in his favour for those considering budget midfielders.

Of the four goals Wigan have scored in these two games, N’Zogbia has played a part in three of them, scoring two and assisting one, in a pair of performances that have seen him pick up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in both games. Having picked up 5 Fantasy League Points in Wigan’s first five games, N’Zogbia’s price has plummeted from £6m to £5.4m, but the winger has subsequently racked up an impressive 28 points in his last 3 games.

Wigan have something of a mixed bag of fixtures in their next six (BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun) but as he begins to replicate the form that saw him bag 5 goals, 7 assists and a fantastic 31 Bonus Points last season, Charles N’Zogbia is showing just how important he is to Martinez’s side as they continue to climb the league.

For those looking at NZogbia, he does indeed look even better value than Adam, but not by a country mile. I don't think there's much in it.

Fixtures are the main reason to pick Adam over N'Zog

          +1

I think if you have either Adam or Nzog, you need to play them week in / week out. They are in most cases fixture proof.

bir, WBA, EVE, avl, whm, WOL for Adam
BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun for N'Zogbia

Close but I prefer Adam's chances.

I say both Adam and NZoggers. Makes it easy to squeeze in Fabregas as well as having a decent forward line. Add one cheap striker to the equation and play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 depending on fixtures

I agree DaFoe22, and this will likely be the plan I follow:

      Berbatov > Elmander (or similar)
      Malouda > Fab
      Albrighton> Adam
      Nasri> VDV

      Current Squad

      Foster
      Carson

      Alex
      Elmo
      Jara
      Shawx
      Jones

      Malouda
      Albrighton
      Nasri
      Nani
      N'Zog

      Berbatov

    WTF?

ps No Gerrard or Torres. Napoli at evens is very tempting. Thoughts? Not that Gerrard and Torres ever do anything mind you.

they have doing some experiments with van persie's injury prone-ness back in holland. they are trying to discover how many people it takes before rvp's injury proneness runs out. they didn't have any rats so instead used local dutch orphans for the experiment. the children have to hold hands with van perise and see how many kids it takes beofre the effect runs out. the end result was it took 14 children.
here is a clip of the 4 child part of the experiment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1hvKYOnhLQ

    Foster (Krul)
    Dann Mummy Alcaraz (Jara Perch)
    Nasri Malouda VDV Nani (Adam)
    Carroll Berbatov Drogba(c)

If Malouda is 'rested' then Adam will slot in.

    Transfers ready for GW9: None
Transfers ready for GW10: Nasri > Fabregas + Dann > Coleman
Future Transfers: Possibly Perch > Simpson and Carroll/Malouda to make way if they don't buck up.

I'd rather have been blown out than lose my unbeaten status by the smallest of margins.

Even more galling is that last year that would have ended up in a tie and I'd still be the last unbeaten team standing.

Still, at least my beloved QPR are still unbeaten. Go superhoops!

I did too, but I hated History at A level that I changed back to English before it was too late.

And I really wasn't that lucky, we had to do a whole lot of dross too. I pity anyone who has come across Lord Byron for some kind of academic purpose.

Best signing at the best price for Man Utd is Diego Forlan. He wants to play in the Prem again, the only trick is persuading him to rejoin a team and manager that he didn't exactly thrive with the last time.
        Absolutely fantastic player.

I'd seriously respect fergie if he brought him back in- very difficult to back track like that as a manager...

Do we even know forlan wants to go back to united? I always thought the main reason he failed was that the club was too big for him...

The Glazers will probably take a chunk of the sale.

United would do well to get a Benzema plus cash deal. I doubt there's much chance of Kaka, or United having enough money to put in a decent bid for Aguero.

dunno i transferred him out because carson and krul are the best rotaters

on the basis that carson and robinson have fallen out of synch (they were in synch before) whilst carson and krul are in synch then maybe Krul could be a good shout

Got Krul in on WC last week to "rotate" with Foster, looking at Krul's last 4 weeks, the idea of rotation is a bit of a joke, I would rather risk Foster home and away and him get some save points rather than play Krul at home and him to get 1 point week in week out. He averages about 1.5 saves a match, wtf?!

Hart > Jaas to afford Fab
No point having a 6.4M GK who cannot keep a CS

I'm thinking of downgrading him so I can get Cashley and Fabs.

Cole will score more points than Hart and Kolarov can come in for Citeh when he's fit.

I just have reached the conclusion that Cashley is more must have than Hart now.

Foster is getting his points mainly at home, as expected. I have Krul and I just wish Newcastle could stop conceding pretty much every game.

+1 Foster/Krul will be my pairing for the time being but am honestly considering playing Foster every week until Krul can (a) make some saves and (b) starts keeping clean sheets, I can play Simpson when fit with hope of assists and BP's for Newcastle defence cover

its pretty much the only way lol Drogba's the only 1 in that team that's holding your money and he's a season keeper barring injury.

Nani to Adam, Areta to Fabregas might work and it'd be a diff approach (funds permitting)...its easily possible that:

Fabregas, Malouda and Adam > Fabregas, Nani and Arteta

            Bale>N'zog

When oh when will Liverpool start to keep clean sheets, and be as good defensively as in recent years ?

I have had Skrtel and Konchesky for a number of GWs now, as both quite cheap for a "big team" - and as I say, based on Liverpool's good defensive reputation. (But maybe that's the issue - ARE Liverpool still a "big team" ? Certainly City and Spurs are better, and even the likes of Everton and Villa are probably better teams now....)

Surely they will keep clean home to BLK this weekend ?! 🙂

skrtel has gone up in price this season 😆

even when liverpool are doing well 2 of their defenders is a bit much especially as skrtel and konchesky don't score goals. regardless of their form they are still a good bet for a clean sheet this weekend so i guess give skrtel and konchesky one more game but after that i'd much rather spend 5.5 on jagielka for example

That is why I am very tempted to KEEP Skrtel and Konchesky...esp if no-one else has Liverpool defenders at the moment 🙂

Surely, Liverpool MUST "come good" soon ? With all the off-pitch antics seemingly solved, will that in itself spark them ON the field ?

I cannot trust Arsenal defence, and Chelsea and United's defenders are so expensive (though I did take a punt on Alex from GW 1, and that has paid off....) Therefore, my reasoning was to go Liverpool - esp as they have been so good in defence over past 5 years. And Skrtel and Kon. are very cheap.

Keep Malouda this week, they've got Wolves so hopefully he gives them a bashing.

As for VDV, I'd keep him and ditch Bale.

Can you wait til next week and get rid of A Cole to save some spondoolee and then get Fab and do a re-shuffle? WC it?

Hate playing my WC though. Was gonna try and save it for DBL week fixtures.
