Having started the campaign with two heavy defeats -conceding ten goals and scoring none- Wigan were marked by many as doomed for the drop even before August was finished. Add to the mix their star man, Charles N’Zogbia, was looking for a way out, and it’s fair to say the start of the season was something of a nightmare for those around the DW Stadium.

Two months on and Roberto Martinez has turned the club’s fortunes around impressively. Having subsequently tightened up at the back, Wigan have lost just one of their last six games and, over the last couple of games, are now starting to play again. The Latics found the net only twice in their first six games but have now netted two goals in each of their last two games, with N’Zogbia’s return to form being fundamental to the upswing in their attacking fortunes.

Whereas last season saw N’Zogbia used predominantly as an inside-out right winger, Martinez is utilising his talents on the winger’s natural left flank this time round, too. With Hugo Rodallega dropping to the bench last weekend at St James‘ Park, N’Zogbia played as a left-winger in Wigan’s 4-3-3 set-up and silenced the home crowd with a quickfire brace as Martinez’s side took the game to their hosts.

As the above passing heatmaps show, against Newcastle 90% of his passes came down the left hand side of the pitch at Newcastle whereas in Wigan’s previous game, the 2-0 home win over Wolves, it was near an even split as the Frenchman attacked Mick McCarthy’s side on both flanks. A third of his passes against Newcastle were in the final third, whereas two-third of all passes against Wolves were in the final third, showing just how much of a menace he is to the opposition.

Regardless of where he plays, however, N’Zogbia (number 10) -as these average position maps from the two aforementioned games illustrate- tends to be the further forward of Wigan’s players, and with other similarly priced midfielders Chris Brunt and Charlie Adam scoring similarly so far this season, this fact may swing the odds in his favour for those considering budget midfielders.

Of the four goals Wigan have scored in these two games, N’Zogbia has played a part in three of them, scoring two and assisting one, in a pair of performances that have seen him pick up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in both games. Having picked up 5 Fantasy League Points in Wigan’s first five games, N’Zogbia’s price has plummeted from £6m to £5.4m, but the winger has subsequently racked up an impressive 28 points in his last 3 games.

Wigan have something of a mixed bag of fixtures in their next six (BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun) but as he begins to replicate the form that saw him bag 5 goals, 7 assists and a fantastic 31 Bonus Points last season, Charles N’Zogbia is showing just how important he is to Martinez’s side as they continue to climb the league.

rooney leaving could be a blessing in disguies, i agree with the reports that glazers wont get away with taking the rooney money this time around. it will have to be spent on an a list player

    possibly two

so after losing ronaldo and tevez and doing little,

maybe losing rooney is the kick start things need for some proper tranfer activity

que schewinstiger and benzema holding red jerseys stage ...left?

well so far they have had the best frontman in fergie, who actually beleives in the young guns,

but i dont think he would suggest the same now

and i dont think they could get away with it without him

united fans will stop them, fergie will stop them, the players will come out and demand signings etc etc

          as dailymail puts it

'While a simplistic analysis of the Rooney saga supports the theory that any money earned by the sale would be ploughed into servicing the Glazers' debt, the reality is that Rooney's exit would be a nightmare scenario for United's owners.

'United without Rooney would continue to attract the global partnerships they have been so successful in thrashing out, but allowing Rooney to follow Ronaldo and Carlos Tévez out of Old Trafford would leave Ferguson's team devoid of stardust and, more worryingly, short of the quality required to keep United at the forefront of English and European football.

'If the wheels come off on the pitch, the spectre of losing Champions League prize money begins to loom. Without that, servicing the debt could become an issue.

'So rather than sell Rooney and divert the proceeds to the debt, the Glazers know that the only option is to hand the money straight back to Ferguson to invest in another A-list player.

Sorry, but English fans have proven themselves to be completely rubbish at protesting against owners.

United fans were Norwich scraves to games and expect the Glazers to leave because of it. Liverpool fans stage a march from the pub to the game one week (pretty much as they would do every week), and expect their owners to be fazed.

Fergie could retire, the way he plans to do soon anyway, and most of the United players won't speak up about it anyway. Even Gary Neville's keeping mum about the whole thing.

the problem jenas is that glazers are a business

the debt building up someone has to pay back and just like the directors of liverpool had to forcibly remove gilett and hicks the same will eventually happen to the glazers

banks who are owed the debt from united will at some point demand it be called in and united cannot afford to pay it back unless someone buys the club and does it for them

exactly. Forget the Glazers making the decision to keep the money, the banks may well take this as an opportunity to call the debt in?

We need more creativity in the midfield. Upfront i think we can cope. But a class midfielder and a promosing defender would be nice. Sneidjer,Schewinstiger,Kaka,Benzema,Suarez,Van der Wiel,Fabiano,Pato,Nilmar. Are among a few options.
If we get 50-60 million for him and use some of the Ronaldo money e can buy a few good players.

    (repost)With Alex in defence:

    Robinson (Carson)
    Coleman Alex Elmo Kolarov (Simpson)
    Malouda Nani Fabs Adam (Ferguson)
    Berbs Drog Carroll

    With Cole in defence:

    Robinson (Carson)
    Coleman Cole Elmo Kolarov (Simpson)
    VDV Nani Fabs Adam (N’Zog)
    Berbs Drogs Carroll

Still don’t know if ditching Malouda is worth it, Cole will probably get a few less points than him but in the longterm VDV and N’zog would compensate for that..

It's true, I keep having to remind myself that without Rooney and playing pretty average as a team all season, we're still in the top 4.... it could be a lot worse. We certainly need to invest in January though, we need to get some proper quality in.

If no solid news comes regarding Malouda on Friday what would you do

    1. Play him
    2. Sell him for VDV or N zogbia
3 Keep Malouda one more week but sell Gerrard this week.

Pick one of the following (this are over the next 2 weeks)

    A) Chamack => Drogba (this week left over with £1.2)

    B) Arteta => Fabs (maybe this week?)
    Bale => VDV
Could pray the Chamack => Bent differential to go down by .1.

    C) Arteta => Malouda (this week?)
    Bale => VDV
Chamack => Berba (4 point hit)
    Left over with £1.4

I was this close on doing it last week (fortunately I waited until Friday and didn't)... Now of course I'm probably over-thinking this...

Question is do we expect Drogs+Arteta+Bale, to outscore Malouda+VDV+Berba?

Rooney is a bell-end! Cant imagine where he will go but this is a problem for United from a financial perspective as someone posted before. They have no star player/poster boy now to bring in the merchandise and other marketing deals. Its too early to say what will happen in the aftermath though as Fergie always seems to make it alright they have one of the best scouting networks in the world.

On a different and slightly disturbing note, I havent heard the ramblings of Fran for ages. Where is she/he/it? I remember everyone getting wound up so much last year due to the random comments by her/him/it!

Hows this accumulator look for tonight

    1. Eto to score
    2. Man Utd to win by 2 goals
    3. Barca to win and Messi to score anytime (will wait for lineups)
    4. Over 2.5 goals in Twente vs Werder Bremen
    5. Schalke to beat Hapoel Tel Aviv

    pays out 11/1

I don't really know anything about how attacking Twente and Werder are though.

Surely Fergie won't dream of playing Rooney after all this. So Rooney will just be getting more overweight in the reserves, if Fergie even lets him play there, and by january his market value will go down as he will be so unfit, therefore Manure will not get as much money as they hoped as well as losing their prize asset to a rival.
Worrying times for Manure fans but for everyone else, great news!

rooney wont play another game for united

his market value wont drop by january because teams have already said they want him (city chelsea madrid barce)

IF fergie can bring in a good midfielder and striker it maybe the best thing for united

alright then, since nobody appears to have an opinion on whether Jerome Thomas will play this weekend, what about Adam Johnson? He played 84 minutes last Saturday - did Silva get injured? how badly?

Adam Johnson was awful against Blackpool, a team he should have murdered. He will most likely get dropped because Silva is much better than him.

He should have found it so easy as he has pace and Blackpool don't, look at what Walcott did to them. He didn't have a good game and Silva showed him up.

Silva won them the game against Blackpool. Think Johnson will be benched, and he will revert to 3 dfm's to kill off arsenal.
