Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch

Chatter in the Fantasy Football Scout halls this week has been constant and along the lines of;

“I’m thinking of bringing Fabregas in, I need to take a hit, who should I get rid of?”

Given the fact that second placed Arsenal are at home to struggling West Ham, this comes as no surprise. The incredibly influential Spaniard would be an obvious pick for captain given his ability to unlock defences with his passing and goal scoring prowess.

However, todays game against Manchester City would have given a number of managers food for thought about whether tinkering with their side and taking hits to get Fabregas in is really essential after the performance of fellow Arsenal Midfielder Samir Nasri.

The Frenchman has scored 7 goals in 11 games this season in all competitions with 3 assists. 4 of those 7 goals have come in the league with his solitary league assist in todays game, setting up Nicholas Bendter for Arsenals third goal. In the FPL game, he has also picked up 9 bonus points this season which perhaps understates his contribution.

Whilst there is no doubting that long term Fabregas offers a greater potential return, at £7.4m Nasri is 4.4 million pounds cheaper than Cesc, and for those without a limitless pot of money or not wanting to take out other potential big hitters such as Malouda or Nani he could provide an alternative source of points.

One factor in the thought process may well be the penalty miss by Fabregas. Whilst there is little to suggest that this miss will see the Spaniard removed from penalty taking duty, given the fact that a number of Nasri’s goals this season have come from the spot in Fabregas’s absence, a number of people will keep a keen eye on the Arsenal penalty taker should the recent flurry of Arsenal penalty’s continue.

Away from the Arsenal game, Manchester United notched up a 2-1 win against Stoke at the Britannia. Both of United’s goals were scored by Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez. These were goals 4 and 5 for the young Mexican in a United shirt and will only have added to a blossoming reputation. Two goals, one of which which was marvellously improvised back header (i’ve never said that before), will have proved to many that  he all the attributes required to be a big star at Manchester United.

In Wayne Rooney’s absence, this was Hernandez’s second consecutive start in the Premier League and with Rooney’s injury looking to keep him out for a further 2 to 3 weeks there is a good chance that the little pea will continue to get starts. Certainly if he continues in a similar form, as a short term solution at £6.9m, he appears to be something of a bargain. Naturally it’s nearly impossible to determine whether or not he will start but what does seem likely is that if he is given starts he’s a huge goalscoring threat.

Personally I'd downgrade Alex, Toure and Konchesky to cheaper attacking defenders (Elmo, Coleman, Simpson) and then go Ferg to Fabs....

Any advice on best cheapo keeper to get alongside Foster? As in, 4.1 or less. Al-Habsi is worth considering, but Krul rotates much better, despite seemingly not being able to keep a cleanie. Or even worth doubling up on SUnderland with Mignolet? Decisions...

I was wondering - how many players do you guys think it is best to have as your 'Core' team, i.e. that you play week in week out regardless of fixtures?
I was just trying out different combinations and I found this interesting; having only 1 expensive striker and 2 cheapies allows me 5 great midfielders and 3 good defenders. Then I could rotate the last outfield slot between the 2 cheap strikers and 2 cheap defenders, one of which are bound to have a decent fixture.

But it doesnt seem like many people go with only 1 big hitter up front.
    Thoughts?

That's my personal tactic. It's my first season so I'm trying out these tactics for now. It's great until injuries. Like last week when Drogba was injured, of course no-one probably had anyone really good who could come in for him but I had Foley from Wolves 🙂

Right now my 4.5m midfielder whom I never play (Etuhu) is also injured so I'm quite screwed if another midfielder doesn't play. So far the tactic is doing ok, but I can see how it can quite easily backfire soon!

I am tempted to go along the same route. I think its why it seems that so many people seem to 'fluke' their way to decent scores - they have a good solid core that they dont tinker with, whilst all of us here of FFS go crazy trying to figure out what the best transfers are!

      1 defender - Alex
3 midfielders - Fabregas and two others
2 forwards - Drogba and someone else

Am currently pairing up the four remaining defenders, and playing one from each pair every week. So one from Jara/Enrique and one from Elmo/Salcido. Fixture wise it works very well, but the results have been nothing sort of terrible.

I guess that was kind of my question - is there more value in having 2 forwards and 3 midfielders to rely on or 1 forward and 5 midfielders?
There seems to be a lot more value in midfield (e.g. around 8-10 million) compared to forwards.

The whole issue of captaincy complicates it all... I'd be much more confident captaining Tevez/RVP ahead of someone like Arteta/VDV etc.

True but Fabregas, Malouda and Nani all offer viable captaincy options as well as the 1 big hitter upfront.
Whilst with 2 expensive strikers I couldnt afford all three aforementioned in midfield so would still probably end up with 4 captaincy choices overall.
Hmm, I think I might be convincing myself this is the way to go...

last year when I sold Bent, he kept socring. When I brought him back in, he did nothing. I bought and sold him twice or three times and this happened like clockwork. Im pretty sure Drogba would hit the form of his life if I sold him next week

I'm proud of myself for not jumping on the Berba bandwagon after his hattrick..He's done nothing and even that 7 pointer should have been just 5. Keep Drogs I'd suggest

Two weeks versus 36 other weeks, I'd consider losing Berbatov for RVP when he returns but until then I'll be keeping him.

I dont if this has already been discussed but I don't usually have strong feelings about any presenter but colin murray needs to be taken out of commision
