Our weekly Watchlist refresh took place earlier today and the eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted the latest ranking changes for our mid-term player recommendations. Those new to all this shebang can find the Watchlist rankings at the bottom of the sidebar on your frontpage.

Movement within the rankings is pretty tame in comparison to previous weeks with Chelsea’s fixtures kind enough to see their top rated players – Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba hold firm in top spots. Improved runs for both United and Arsenal have seen their assets enjoy climbs however, with Cesc Fabregas coming close to toppling Nani at the top of our Midfield rankings.

In the Keepers table there are climbs for Tim Howard of Everton and Jussi Jaaskelainen of Bolton as both embark on kind opponent runs. Our earlier “Frisking of the Fixtures” revealed that both teams are set to embark on schedules that bring them four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks.

Arsenal were also singled out in that article and subsequently we see Lucasz Fabianski holding firm in the Keeper rankings, despite the impending threat from Manuel Almunia. The Pole’s performance at Eastlands last weekend should be enough to see him maintain his start and, with a clean sheet in that game, the Gunners will go into their next three Gameweeks with renewed confidence at the back.

That’s also reflected in our Defenders rankings where Sébastien Squillaci enjoys a climb in the middle of the table. Above him we have the goal threat and improved clean sheet potential of Gary Cahill and the latest bargain acquisition in the form of Newcastle’s Danny Simpson. He returned to the starting lineup at Upton Park last time out and at 3.9 offers a superb “route to recruit” option for Fabregas hunters. Simpson’s rise has Jose Enrique dropping, despite his stronger assist potential. Newcastle’s clean sheet returns have been disappointing but three strong home fixtures in the next four certainly shows promise.

Out top five Defenders remain untouched with Chelsea’s Cole attracting Bonus Points in addition to clean sheets, the Everton pairing of Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines offering strong attacking potential along with Sunderland’s “out of position” Egyptian Elmohamady. United’s Patrice Evra has also enjoyed a recent boost having claimed a left midfield starting role at Stoke last weekend. That could well continue to be the case against Spurs in Gameweek ten. John O’Shea enters high again as the cheaper option in a United defence which should pick up points in the next month with four Old Trafford encounters in the next six.

The top positions in the midfield area also survived. Fabregas pushed Nani for the top spot, while Rafael Van der Vaart held on to the fifth with his goal against Everton, despite facing trips to United and Bolton next. Climbs for West Brom’s Chris Brunt and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri weren’t quite enough to see them break the top five then. Below them Kevin Nolan’s goal and link-up with housemate Andy Carroll appears to bode well ahead of Newcastle’s run of home fixtures. Ashley Young also enjoys a climb as his fixtures improve slightly with four home games in six, even if the opponents include both United and Arsenal.

Injury concerns for Carlos Tevez and the new threat of rotation with Mario Balotelli has him drop from second in the Forward rankings. Below him he’s now threatened by the resurging Andy Carroll and the consistent form of Johan Elmander which, given his fixtures to come, could continue to bear fruit for those Fantasy Managers taking a punt on Bolton’s Swede. Fulham’s returning trickster Mousa Dembele is an interesting climb at the halfway point, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie needs to shake off his injury woes to re-establish himself in the top five. He drops today but could climb again if we can get solid news on his fitness. Finally, Mexican of the moment, Javier Hernandez has to settle for a surprisingly lowly footing. The threat of Rooney’s return in a fortnight surely dents his potential beyond Gameweek’s ten and eleven.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Is getting A Cole now at 8.1m a good i idea
    as he seems to be a bonus point magnet with no rotation risk
    to afford him i need to do

    Nani>brunt

    or Malouda > Brunt
    shawcross >Cole

    what tempts me is the fact that he has scored more than a lot of other strikers or midfielders (more than Nani -but malouda is a rotation risk hence i am tempted

      Is Malouda really a rotation risk?

      When people say that it implies to me him being left out on merit, i just can't see it to be honest. Every once in a while he might be rested but i doubt it will happen very often - Ancelotti is pretty godd at keeping us informed with that so the odd week of benching him is no biggie.

      I wouldn't drop either Nani or Malouda personally.

    whats better based on my team

    A) 4 point hit, Malouda -> Fab
    B) 4 point hit, Tevez (if out) to Chamakh
    C) 8 point hit, Routledge -> Fabs
    Tevez -> dembele/elmander/odemwingie

      Depends on Tevez... if he's not playing then C could be best.

      I still don't believe Malouda > Fabs is a good move, if you can help it. Drogba or no Drogba. I think Malouda will score well over the next 4 GWs.

    Hi, I'm new here. Here's my squad to rate:

    Howard - Carson
    Jags - Elmo - A Cole - Coleman - Dann
    Malouda - Nasri - Nzog - VDV - Nani
    Berbs - Tevez - Odem

    I have 2.2 in the bank. Should I chop Malouda for Fabregas this week? I'm worried I might regret getting rid of Malouda, but I really want Fabs. I've already transferred in Howard and Nasri this week, so this will be another 4 point hit. Cheers.

    Anybody any thoughts on either -

    a) Etherington out and Nasri in
    b) Malouda out and Fabs in

    Iam gonna captain whoever I bring in, I can’t decide which to do, I dont want to lose malouda and Nasri is shit hot at the minute but fabs could turn it on with a massive haul over the next two home games!!

    Chaps, comments appreciated on the following conundrum. Predicatably it revolves around getting Fabregas in:

    a) Malouda > Fabs
    Straight swap, has been part of my 3 week plan)

    b) VDV > Fabs + Toure K > Simpson
    I get to keep Malouda but seriously weakens the defence to a point where Konchesky @ 5m is the most expensive.

    Thanks in advance.

          Good alternative King, gives me a wicked looking midfield and scope to improve the defence (i.e. get someone like Dembele in and then in a few weeks time I could do Konch & Toure > Cole & Simpson)

          Headshotace I have been weighing up the VDV / Malouda option and asking myslef if Malouda is goona outscore VDV significantly to justify the 2m + price, and I think not personally.

    Tevez is the captain and focal point of Man City, do people really think he is a rotation risk now Balotelli is back?

    Much more likely they adapt to play both, no?

      • 16 Years

      That's what I've always thought, Balotelli could just play out wide. With the way Tevez drops so deep they need someone with genuine pace to make the most of the space created, and Balotelli has pace in abundance. Shame they got rid of Bellamy, because he'd have been a perfect fit in one of the wide areas.

      Although, didn't Mancini say that he was going to change formation when they had all their players back fit? So if it is a new formation, then it's pretty hard to predict how they'll shape up.

        Yeah agreed, but i think it's safe to assume that Tevez will still be in there.

        The issue, as i see it, is whether his returns will be affected, not whether he will start or not. Certainly not a reason to get rid imo.

          More than conceivable - didn't he hint as well that the formation might be slightly less defensively set up once they were at full strenght?

            Yup, although that's probably only because the media were giving him grief for being so defensive!

            Having Boateng and Kolarov at the back will be the side a lot more attacking though. He's mentioned a couple of times how they'll be key members of the side, with them bombing forward at every opportunity.

    Wondered what you guys thought...Considering transfering Mikel & Johnson for Bosingwa & Nasri

    Johnson (poor I know) - Cole - Evra (foley & campbellsub)
    Mikel (sub usually) - Bale - Van der Vaart - NZogbia - Nolan
    Tevez - Drogba - Carroll

    It will involve a 4 point deduction and will be my first extra transfer...or should I wait until next game week so no deduction and save this weeks transfer?

      I try to minimise points hits too, but that sounds like as good a reason to do one as any. Go for it.

      Is that Andy Johnson in there?? There's a blast from the past - season's keeper when he was at Palace (about 10 years ago!) I'd swap him for Carroll (NEW), or Odemwingie (WBA), or Varney (Blackpool)

      Yes.

      De Jong to anyone and Andy Johnson to anyone would improve that side.

      Perhaps Barton and Carroll if money's tight.

          haha, thought id take a gamble on aj as hes just coming back from injury and fulham could do with a striker, already got 3 newcastle players but krul and enrique aint really doing much for me

            Yeah, doubling up on the Newcastle defence is silly.

            Like Krul is an ok medium-term option, for those that DON'T already have Newcastle defenders.

            If you have two players from any defence then that's because you expect to play both together when you play them. If you only ever play one and bench the other, then there is no point having both.

    AJ's minutes had been follow a (predictable) pattern recently but the Arsenal game broke that:

    80, 84, 19, 14, 19, 84, 0

    Damn you Mancini! 😉

    The dilemna de jour appears to be whether people are getting rid of malouda of tezez in order to squeeze fabs into the team. My personal take on this quandry is:

    A: Malouda -> Fabs
    and Bale -> Arteta

    or

    B: Bale -> Fabs
    and Tezez -> Elmander

    Any advice much appreciated!

      This is only a dilemma in my opinion if Tevez is ruled out.

      The article from The Manchester Evening News doesn't quote any Manchester City official, coach, or player.

      Tevez has proven (after first international break) to play even when "doubtful."

      It's a dilemma if he's ruled it. If he has the potential to play, it's not even a question. Wolves and WBA are his next 2 games and he's the Captain and Penalty Taker at a top 4 side. 150 minutes in those 2 fixtures will bring a goal or two, at least.

        Mancini might take the opportunity to rest him for one of these, due to a bit of a niggle, the Manchester derby just around the corner, and it gives Balotelli a bit of a run out against mediocre opposition where the team should still win anyway, even if Balotelli plays shite.

        Thanks for that. I had been planning on keeping Tevez for a while, but all of a sudden got jittery about taking out Malouda, and thought maybe should get rid of Tezez instead. But you are quite right, tezez does have a great couple of fixtures coming up. You have steadied my nerves!

    chelsea training news:
    ramires is still only doing a bit of light training. this could be good news for ashley cole again as in the wolves game zhirkov often tucked in and allowed cole to bomb forward into crazily attacking positions.
    the reporter also said ancelotti has a selection headache this week as to who to play alongside terry, implying that alex is ready to play
    still no sign of frank lampard
