Arsenal enjoyed a Carling Cup walk in the St Jamesโ€™ Park as they overpowered a second-string Newcastle in their own backyard. The fleet-footed Theo Walcott stole the show, notching a brace of goals to remind both Arsene Wenger and us Fantasy Managers of his devastating form before injury temporarily de-railed his campaign. Elsewhere, extra-time wins for Villa and West Ham saw them progress to the last eight in another night of cup squad rotation merrimentโ€ฆ

Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner pushed their claims for starting roles with goals in the convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle at St Jamesโ€™ Park. Walcott, in particular, looked sharp and provided plenty of concern for the home defence with his pace and movement. Given his outstanding start to the season, it will be interesting to see how Wenger deals with his availability for the forthcoming fixtures.

Wengerโ€™s lineup last night saw Laurent Koscielny return from a back problem to bolster a defence that also included Johan Djourou, with Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs starting at full-back. Elsewhere the eleven was completed by a mix of players who are likely to find themselves on the bench against West Ham this weekend โ€“ Denilson, Carlos Vela and Craig Eastmond – and those who will be pushing for inclusion โ€“ Tomas Rosicky, Bendtner and of course Walcott. Despite the goalscoring feats, those three would seem likely to start life on the bench, such is the competition for starts. Gibbs will be a doubt however, he limped off early on with what has been reported as a knee injury โ€“ another niggle for the young left-back.

Cesc Fabregas was introduced mid-way through the second-half by Wenger as the Gunners boss look to sharpen up his skipper. Typically Fabregas contributed the assists for Bendtnerโ€™s second and Arsenalโ€™s third.

Chris Hughton made a string of changes to his eleven, handing starts to the likes of Ryan Taylor, Tamas Kadar, Alan Smith, Haris Vuckic, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger โ€“ all of which are unlikely to trouble the teamsheet come the visit of Sunderland on Sunday.

The start for Wayne Routledge, and perhaps even Mike Williamson at the back, puts question marks over their inclusion in Sundayโ€™s starting eleven. Routledge has lost his place of late and Jonas Gutierrez seems likely to continue on the left-flank. Williamsonโ€™s situation seems more secure in the short-term but with Sol Campbell and Steven Taylor battling back to fitness, his starting role is clearly coming under increased threat.

One final footnote, Joey Barton picked up a late booking last night – his fourth of the campaign putting him on the suspension tightrope. One more yellow and he faces a one-match ban; not a great scenario given the cauldron expected for Sunday’s local derby with Sunderland.

Aston Villa progressed to the last eight thanks to strikes from Emile Heskey and an extra-time winner from Stewart Downing. The victory came at a price though – Marc Albrighton seeing red for hauling back Burnleyโ€™s Wade Elliot; Albrighton will now miss Sundayโ€™s local derby with Birmingham โ€“ a blow to his Fantasy owners who have already questioned his first XI security of late.

Houllier is quickly running out of attacking options for Sundayโ€™s game with Gabby Agbonlahor already ruled out. John Carew will also be a doubt after pulling out of last nightโ€™s tie late on through illness. That meant that Ashley Young started the match in the strikers role, with Stephen Ireland pushed up in support. Ireland will now likely maintain his role โ€œin the holeโ€ against Birmingham, with Young shifted to a wide role and Heskey brought back in to lead the attack. Steve Sidwell looks set to get the opportunity to make a claim for a run of starts with club skipper Stylian Petrov sidelined for two months. Sidwell started last night and, given Albrightonโ€™s suspension, looks set to get the nod again on Sunday. Stephen Warnock was suspended for last night’s tie having picked up his fifth booking of the season at the weekend – he will therefore make a return against Birmingham.

Victor Obinna and Manuel da Costa chose the Carling Cup to register their first goals of the season after weeks of threatening in the Premier League. The pair struck in extra-time to hand the Hammersโ€™ passage to the last eight but it was the performance of the ever-reliable Scott Parker that caught the eye. Parker headed West Hamโ€™s equaliser to take the tie into the extra period and provided the catalyst for much of the home sideโ€™s attacking play on the night.

Following his quality strike against United, Tony Pulis handed a start to Tuncay, slotting him alongside Kenwyne Jones up front against the Hammers. Jones had given Stoke an early lead from a Jermaine Pennant corner, but Tony Pulis was unable to keep both players on the pitch due to illness. Jones and Pennant were duly replaced in the second-half, a forced change which Pulis later identified as a turning point in the tie after the efforts of West Ham’s subs – Mark Noble and Victor Obinna – proved decisive factors in the win.

From a Fantasy perspective we now have to consider that Jones and Pennant, along with Matt Etherington who missed the game with a knock sustained against United, as doubts for the trip to Goodison this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This Tevez thing is a pain in the ass! I would normally never consider a 12 point hit but could this pay off. I already took a hit to get Cesc in earlier this week. Heres my current team:

    Hart
    Dann Faye El-Becks Jara Perch
    Malouda Nani Cesc N'zog Ferguson
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

Is it worth taking a further 8 point hit to do Tevez - Hernandez and Ferguson - Nasri. That will be a 12 point hit this week. Or should i do Tevez - Chamakh making it an 8 point hit this week. Or leave it and play...ferguson?

Ferguson will score 2 points as he doesn't seem to pick up BPs away from home. So Chamakh will *have* to score for you to break even. You'd need him to get a double to profit from an 8 point hit. In 9 games he's scored 3, so the odds don't look great.

To be fair, the 4 point hit has already been taken, so to transfer in Chamakh should only be looked at as an additional 4 point hit. I reckon its worth it - he will definitely score/assist at least once in the next two games.

I'm WCing and was going to fit him in. Tempted to take a gamble and go for Balotelli. Either way, WCing means Tevez is nowhere near my team for at least 2 weeks.

think i'm going to take an 8 point hit this week, which I hate doing especially with this new carry over transfer system, but sometimes fortune favours the brave!

    OUT - Berbatov, Hart, Bale
    IN - Fabregas, Gilks, Elmander

Gives me a midfield of - VDV, Malouda, Fab, Nani

no imo, berbatov should stay and so should hart, but im guessing those two are to fund the bale>fabs move. imo dont do it, do malouda to fabs instead, that can be funded by downgrading bale or maybe hart, but keep berbatov

Yeh that's the decision that someone here helped me make. You can play the fixtures and switch between Cesc and Malouda if you want. But that's assuming injuries etc to other players don't force you into hits at the same time.

Basically Arsenal have 2 game at home, to Chelsea's 2 away. Then it switches to Arsenal 2 away and Chelsea's 2 home. Make from that what you will. ๐Ÿ™‚

I'd sooner Fabs do well and then bring him in, than take Nasri out and he do well. That feeling would be worse, as more people have Nasri than Fabregas.

Well we saw how he did last week - he was awesome, against a good team, away (could easily have had 10 points).

This week he's at home with a much easier fixture and Arsenal have momentum - i've had all the confirmation i need, i want to be on that train when it sets sail.

Vs 10 men though and with more space than he would have normally. Not taking anything away from him, we know he's a class act, especially at home to weaker opposition.

But for me it would mean losing Nasri or Malouda. Both cases for and against keeping/transferring both.

Just watching the Citeh game and you see the Arsenal players are always looking to pass to Cesc. If he calls for the ball he gets it every time. Everything goes through him.

Even when he let Nasri take a free kick, Nasri put it straight up to where Cesc was near the box.

One thing favouring Nasri is his obvious form.

One thing against Nasri is he doesn't tend to score that well with Fabregas in too (vs 10 man City as a one off).

But maybe Nasri is just getting better so both can score well.

Nasri does well in Cesc's role. But with Cesc on the pitch Nasri is pushed wide, where (unless against 10 man Citeh) he isn't effective.

However it looks like he can go past players out wide this season. Hopefully no more crab passing.

Exactly, i think 'everything goes through him' sums it up.
If Arsenal win he's pretty much nailed on for bonus points.

Arsenal are scoring for fun at the moment and seem to be returning to strength (Chamakh, Nasri, Walcott all looking good). Plus they're playing a rubbish team who played 120 minutes last night. We've seen how weaker teams just get picked apart at the emirates.

It's got goalfest written all over it and you can bet fabs will have at the very least an assist or two + bonus.

Arshavin will be on the scoresheet this week. Nailed on for a start this week, likely not to start away at Shakhtar Donetsk and then back starting against Newcastle.

Oh I forgot, no-one likes him on here. Arshavin can be my differential and the armband can be with Fabregas. Three or four goals for Arsenal should see a solid return.

Arshavin is an incredible player and the cleverest at Arsenal alongside Fabregas. Just need him to be clinical at the weekend and a double figure score looks on.

He will always be a better player for Arsenal than in fpl terms and unfortunately his vision doesn't always turn into points in fpl.

He will still get goals. My own concern is that too often he will come off after 70 mins if the game is wrapped up and miss out on the late couple of goals that can occur sometimes at the Emirates. He remains a favourite nevertheless.

It's when Fabregas starts scoring goals that he can seriously hurt anyone without him. He should have scored at least two (pen and easy chance) against city but doesn't seem to have an eye for goal at the moment (something that Nasri obviously does).

He scored 15 goals last season as opposed to 3,7,2 in years before that. There is a good argument that until he starts scoring then Nasri is the better option, though can completely empathises with the notion that captaining Nasri isn't attractive as captaining Fabs.

                Yeah it's a fair point i suppose.

I guess i'm of the opinion that it's those sort of tactics that will see you chasing last weeks points as opposed to getting ahead. It's obviously difficult to completely pre-empt things but, for me, this is one of those situations where you put faith in the fact a player is about to do something, despite not having done it so far this season.

I guess all will be revealed at the weekend - certainly all eyes on Arsenal i think!

Already taken a 4 point hit this week and i bought Tevez when he was 10.4 so gonna have to wait this one out i think. Pretty annoying that it coincided with taking Drogba out because my forward options are pretty sketch now. You live and learn i guess - still banking on the fact that Fabs will cushion the blow.

Tevez is a tough cookie too so i'm sure he'll be back and raring to go in no time!

Or that he'd put mroe faith in wantaway adebayor who has barely features at all in the prem this season, who didn't even get a start against his old club the weekend after he put a hattrick away?

They didn't pay £24m for Balo just to play him versus Wolves. Given his recent injury, Ade is surely far more likely to get 90 minutes than Balo.

"You think he would have paid 24m for a player he wasn’t confident enough to start against Wolves?"

If he doesn't start, then it's going to be because he's just coming back from injury, not because they've suddenly decided they're not confident with him. Having paid all that money, surely Man C will ease him into Premiership football rather than a risk another long layoff. How much they paid for him is immaterial, it's his fitness and physical condition that's going to be the issue. And out of the two, Ade is in better shape as he's played more.

Well that wasn't said to try and justify him starting, it was a response to the point he was unproven in the premiership, and so wouldn't start - i don't think that's an issue.

I don't disagree with what you said, but he got some game time last weekend so i wouldn't be surprised to see him given an hour or so this weekend. I guess ultimately the issue is whether he is ready for that or not.

I would be a little apprehensive he's just one of those players. He can score but he can also have a hissy fit and do something stupid. After his hattrick then he'll be confident and will be looking to take the opportunity for sure. Also a differential. Hmmm now think I might bring him in lol!

After getting the 50/50 call wrong on the Carson/Foster front last week, it rears its head again this week.

Was going to play Dann over Konchesky and Jones anyway. But Foster may a shout too even though that would mean doubling up on Brum. I fancy Blackpool to score – Villa probably will too – But the Villa re struggling in front of goal after all. Thoughts?

For as long as you have Konchesky I would play him - it's his last week in my team probably before Elmo gets the nod.

It's a sod's law approach given that he's done nothing when you most expect it. I can optimistically see an assist this week.

I'd play Foster (for saves) and Konchesky.

Simpson for sure, Taylor is up against Campbell and Williamson and still is a decent way from fitness

Which one to leave on the bench this weekend:

    Malouda - Nani - Fabregas - VdV - Adam
    Drogba - Hernandez - Carroll

I'm leaning towards benching either VdV or Malouda as the other ones have good fixtures.

Everything Spurs do runs through VdV at the moment. I think they'll have a good go at Utd. People here were talking about Malouda being a rotation risk this weekend? Not sure if it was based on anything real tho.

decisions like that make you wish FPL allowed a 2-5-3 formation.
well my answer anyway, none of those players are ones that should be on the bench given their fixtures, but I would probably do malouda or hernandez

Malouda away to Blackburn or VDV away to United looks to be clear. Hopefully Carlo will let us know that Mal starts tomorrow.

I'm right in thinking that Nasri is now pretty much nailed on for the next few right? Thinking of doubling up with Fabregas

Excluding Fabs he is the closest thing to nailed on in that Arsenal midfield he's probably like 95% certain Wenger can always throw in a curve ball!

If you're looking short-term punty, I'd consider Walcott instead of Nasri.

I'd like to think so. If I downgrade Tevez to someone cheap next week (like Varney), I will probably be upgrading Albrighton to Nasri. Besides, I reckon this is the season where the kid will mature.

      I'd say so Attila. Arsenal's midfield/forward set-up?

      Song; Diaby/Denilson

      Nasri/Walcott; Fabs; Arsh/Walcott

      Chamakh/Bendtner/RVP??

Cheers all! I'll go with him although I'm slightly concerned by the fact that the French team doctor said he was the most unlikeable guy in the French squad - quite an achievement that, he must be a proper nobhead!

i think the ultimate differential this week will be not taking a point hit.. cause everyone seems to be takin one. so think i'll just do Malouda to Fabs for free.. leaving me with
    Robinson/Mignolet
    Alex Mummy (Dann Alcaraz Jara)
    Fabregas(C) VDV Arteta Nani (Barton)
    Drogba Berbatov Carroll

who do i start from Robinson/mignolet? and which one of Dann,Alcaraz,Jara? as a chelsea fan i'm quietly confident alex will start most games if fit

Robinson less likely to keep a cleanie but is going to have the chance to pick up a good few save points.

I actually agree, while I am really tempted to do Tevez OUT Carroll IN and Albrighton OUT Fabregas IN, I could just do Malouda OUT Fabregas IN.

It seems everyone and their mother are taking hits this week.
