Arsenal enjoyed a Carling Cup walk in the St James’ Park as they overpowered a second-string Newcastle in their own backyard. The fleet-footed Theo Walcott stole the show, notching a brace of goals to remind both Arsene Wenger and us Fantasy Managers of his devastating form before injury temporarily de-railed his campaign. Elsewhere, extra-time wins for Villa and West Ham saw them progress to the last eight in another night of cup squad rotation merriment…

Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner pushed their claims for starting roles with goals in the convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park. Walcott, in particular, looked sharp and provided plenty of concern for the home defence with his pace and movement. Given his outstanding start to the season, it will be interesting to see how Wenger deals with his availability for the forthcoming fixtures.

Wenger’s lineup last night saw Laurent Koscielny return from a back problem to bolster a defence that also included Johan Djourou, with Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs starting at full-back. Elsewhere the eleven was completed by a mix of players who are likely to find themselves on the bench against West Ham this weekend – Denilson, Carlos Vela and Craig Eastmond – and those who will be pushing for inclusion – Tomas Rosicky, Bendtner and of course Walcott. Despite the goalscoring feats, those three would seem likely to start life on the bench, such is the competition for starts. Gibbs will be a doubt however, he limped off early on with what has been reported as a knee injury – another niggle for the young left-back.

Cesc Fabregas was introduced mid-way through the second-half by Wenger as the Gunners boss look to sharpen up his skipper. Typically Fabregas contributed the assists for Bendtner’s second and Arsenal’s third.

Chris Hughton made a string of changes to his eleven, handing starts to the likes of Ryan Taylor, Tamas Kadar, Alan Smith, Haris Vuckic, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger – all of which are unlikely to trouble the teamsheet come the visit of Sunderland on Sunday.

The start for Wayne Routledge, and perhaps even Mike Williamson at the back, puts question marks over their inclusion in Sunday’s starting eleven. Routledge has lost his place of late and Jonas Gutierrez seems likely to continue on the left-flank. Williamson’s situation seems more secure in the short-term but with Sol Campbell and Steven Taylor battling back to fitness, his starting role is clearly coming under increased threat.

One final footnote, Joey Barton picked up a late booking last night – his fourth of the campaign putting him on the suspension tightrope. One more yellow and he faces a one-match ban; not a great scenario given the cauldron expected for Sunday’s local derby with Sunderland.

Aston Villa progressed to the last eight thanks to strikes from Emile Heskey and an extra-time winner from Stewart Downing. The victory came at a price though – Marc Albrighton seeing red for hauling back Burnley’s Wade Elliot; Albrighton will now miss Sunday’s local derby with Birmingham – a blow to his Fantasy owners who have already questioned his first XI security of late.

Houllier is quickly running out of attacking options for Sunday’s game with Gabby Agbonlahor already ruled out. John Carew will also be a doubt after pulling out of last night’s tie late on through illness. That meant that Ashley Young started the match in the strikers role, with Stephen Ireland pushed up in support. Ireland will now likely maintain his role “in the hole” against Birmingham, with Young shifted to a wide role and Heskey brought back in to lead the attack. Steve Sidwell looks set to get the opportunity to make a claim for a run of starts with club skipper Stylian Petrov sidelined for two months. Sidwell started last night and, given Albrighton’s suspension, looks set to get the nod again on Sunday. Stephen Warnock was suspended for last night’s tie having picked up his fifth booking of the season at the weekend – he will therefore make a return against Birmingham.

Victor Obinna and Manuel da Costa chose the Carling Cup to register their first goals of the season after weeks of threatening in the Premier League. The pair struck in extra-time to hand the Hammers’ passage to the last eight but it was the performance of the ever-reliable Scott Parker that caught the eye. Parker headed West Ham’s equaliser to take the tie into the extra period and provided the catalyst for much of the home side’s attacking play on the night.

Following his quality strike against United, Tony Pulis handed a start to Tuncay, slotting him alongside Kenwyne Jones up front against the Hammers. Jones had given Stoke an early lead from a Jermaine Pennant corner, but Tony Pulis was unable to keep both players on the pitch due to illness. Jones and Pennant were duly replaced in the second-half, a forced change which Pulis later identified as a turning point in the tie after the efforts of West Ham’s subs – Mark Noble and Victor Obinna – proved decisive factors in the win.

From a Fantasy perspective we now have to consider that Jones and Pennant, along with Matt Etherington who missed the game with a knock sustained against United, as doubts for the trip to Goodison this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hi Im having trouble deciding on who to bench this week,

    Bale or Adam.

Due to united terrible defense at the minute especially at right back id say bale could have a good game.

But then again if fit i think against wba the game could be high scoring and adam could get something out of the game?

    any help appreciated

I think Adam might be a doubt so decision could be made for you. Fergie could well try stifle Bale and VDV so he might not get much joy. Also Adam is home to West Brom!

Surely Fergie will try to stifle Bale and Vdv... like, trying to keep the opposition's two most potent attacking players quiet is generally considered a good idea...!

But there is a difference between trying to stifle them and doing so. Hopefully your right and he manages to do so.

Trying to ignore Tevez-gate but cant! Pls help if you can:
    A) Tevez -> Chamakh (-4 points)
    B) Tevez -> Hernandez (-4 points)
    C) Tevez -> Berbatov (-4 points)
    D) Tevez -> my bench and play Konchesky away to Bolton

[A,B,C would require Tevez dropping 0.3m in 3 weeks time so i can get him back in!]

    Thank you in advance

    Hi guys

Sorry to ask a question that must have already been discussed already but WHO TO REPLACE TEVEZ WITH? Cannot make my mind!

    1/ BERBATOV
    + good fixtures
    + sure starter
    - is he still in form?
    2/ HERNANDEZ
    + good fixtures
    + in form
    - big rotation risk
    3/ CHAMACK
    + good fixtures
    - rotation risk
    4/ ADEBAYOR
    + in form
    - short term alternative during tevez absence
    5/ ELMANDER
    + good fixtures
    + in form
    + release cash
    - not a tier 1 striker
    6/ BENT
    + everlasting goal scorer
    - bad fixtures
    7/ OTHERS
    - Obinna?
    - Odemwingie?

      Berba at home - 7,7,17,7.

One of those two for me. Berba playing his former club may just sway it.

I've got Berbs and am very happy to keep him. However if I was in a similar situation to you I can envisage myself having a cheeky punt on Hernandez. Cheap, low ownership and decent fixtures. He'll also be a stalwart in the team for 3 weeks minimum I'm willing to guess.

I see this exact question every week, What you need to understand is that there is no point in getting 8 good attackers as you can only play 7 at any one time. You should look to downgrade someone and put that money in defence.

That way, you wont be kicking yourself when you bench a big points scorer each week.

i don't even need to look at you defence to know it is full of 4.0 - 4.5 players.

Alos, As you can see last week I benched Barton, he got an assist and would have seen me through the cup if I hadn't benched him. But it was still the right desision and I'm not kicking myself that this happened.

fair play. if you look back and think 'no that wasn't a stupid mistake, and bar hindsight i'd do the same again' then not much more you can do eh. Your approach clearly works looking at your rank and history so ta for your advice.

Know what you mean but I consider Carrol and Adam as cheapos, Just happens that they're damn good cheapos. Normal policy will be to rotate the pair as fixtures rotate well. Defence is Bosingwa/Elmo/Coleman/Figs and Hughes with 2.1m in the bank so not too shabby.

Yes they are cheapos but they are solid perfromers. You are now struggling who to bench between VDV or Adam, both could score huge and if you bench a player who scores 15 points and the other scores 2, you wont be feelling very happy with yourself. But because there is no obvious choice you don't know what to do.

You can ask the guys here on the message board, but they can't help either because there is no right answer.

Better to aviod the situation all together and downgrade someone and put teh money in defence.

I'm not saying do it now, but if you want to aviod this moving forward you need to think about where you can get better value from in defence, Acole, Bosingwa, good keeper like Hart or Cech, Maybe Evra on teh left wing or jagielka or Baines, there is plently of value in the upper price brackets for defenders.

Why on earth would you go Anelka over Berbs or Chamakh? Makes little sense to me especially as you have Drogs. You're putting everything on Chelsea battering Blackburn, which I can't see happening.

Ok I used my 1 transfer to get Elmo in a few days ago before the price rise.

    Foster
    Bosingwa Elmohady Coleman Perch
    Malouda Nasri Nani Adam
    Carroll Drogba (c)

    Bench: Hahnemann, Konchesky, Bale, Tevez
    Bank: 1.7

With Tevez out and likely to drop in price (along with Bale probably), what do you think are my options this week? Worth a points hit to get rid of Bale/Tevez?

Also, is Perch likely to start now that Campbell is back?

Tevez has -20% NTO today already. He was on the rise though, so needs another -20% drop just to 'break even' and start going down into the red. I think that'll happen today (it's only the afternoon, and transfer activity is rife on a thursday). I'm not sure he'll get the NTO to drop friday night, he'd need 100% in a day and hasn't been red flagged.

As a prediction, I reckon he might get close enough to dropping by tomorrow night, then after he doesn't play at Wolves on saturday I can see him dropping saturday night. He should be red flagged at this stage, and he'll have a week to drop before west brom. Given that Berb's fixture this week will be Wolves (h), I think he'll drop during the week. Then he's got one more week to drop before a very tough game, having missed two - I think he's going to drop the .3m most people seem to want him to by the time he's back for United.

Obviously, this is all just speculation, and I'm definitely going to wait and see what Mancini says about the whole thing first. But I think I might be dropping him for Chamakh.

I just hope to God there's a mass exodus from the Tevez bandwagon. In the blink of an eye he went from 10.4 to 11.0, and in doing so rapidly went out of my price range.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there is a midweek GW coming very shortly (week after next I think). Less time between GWs mean less opportunity for players to rise/fall, especially as all the n00bs will probably be unaware of the midweek game being another GW.

    JASK
    elmo - SAMBA - COLEMAN
    ADAM - FAB (c) - vdv - NANI - nzog
    BERBA - drogba

I still might go chamakh even with bendtner around. Thinking that Arsenal will destroy teams before bendtner even gets a chance to come on

Giving serious thought to just subbing in Harewood for Tevez (as long as it seems he will start), BLP vs WB could be a thriller and can see him maybe nicking a goal or assist. Don't really fancy any possible replacements except possibly chico as it would mean a 4pt hit (i'm getting fabs), any thoughts? wisdom of the crowd and all that?

To take a hit or not to take a hit, that is the question, whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune by having Tevez on the bench, or to take a 4 point hit against a see of Dembele's, and by opposing a "no hit policy" end them...

Had saved cash for A) Malouda > Fabs, no hit.

However with Tevez news tempted to keep Malouda and do B) Tevez>Elmander and Yaya>Fabs. -4 points

    Alternative C) Malouda>Fabs and Tevez>Chamakh -4 points

    Advice appreciated!
