The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

    Ok emergency aid needed

    My team:

    Hart (Foster)
    Konchesky | O'Shea | Jones | Alcaraz | Elmo
    Malouda | VdV | Nani | Fabregas | Barton
    Drogba | Carroll | Dembele

My plan was to do Jones -> Bosingwa and then slowly cheapen my defence in order to be able to bring RVP in when he is back.

Is this still a valid plan or can you guys see more pressing matters? I ask cos I have now had two s**t GWs in a row.

    hi all

will albrighton drop in price? CTC says yes, TotalFPL says no. Which do I trust? Thus far I've used TotalFPL, but I recall things going awry when it comes to there being a lower NTO threshold for players who have already risen...

See the strange thing is Mr ViG, you seem to think i care as much about Liverpool as you do about the mighty Man Utd. I literally couldn't give a flying f.....fudge. Matt Busby left a legacy on Utd that transformed us into the most supported team in the world, and gave us the best youth system on the planet (apart from Barca now). I love the fact he was Liverpool captain, and that he left a sinking ship to leave his glorious legacy with us. The man deserves another statue. 😀

Hook line and sinker weirdo (that is how you spell it). Enjoy a fruitless season, a massively below expectation campaign. Chelsea look far superior in both squad, manager and play. You can console yourself at how shit LFC are at the moment if it makes you feel better.

Exactly. United don't play a rigid 4-4-2 either. Its more 4-4-1-1 with Berba dropping deep, or at times yesterday it was 4-2-2-2 with Park and Nani cutting infield alot. This helps counteract the numerical disadvantage in midfield.

I don't see City dominating possession. Also, Yaya Toure was the wrong player to use - he definitely is not the deepest of the city midfielders!
The reason why I think United will be fine with 442 against City is that DeJong, Toure and (to a lesser extent) Barry are not great passers of the ball. (I am comparing them to other midfield players in top 4 sides btw)

You don't watch a lot of football, do you mate?

He's scored against Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool (when they were good), has a champions' league hat-trick to his name, and holds the record for the quickest ever Premier League goal after coming on. Not bad for a 22 year old.

And he's scored more World Cup goals than Wayne Rooney. And more goals this season that Wayne Rooney.

I agree tha bendtner is certainly a lot better than many people give him credit for- but it's still outrageous to claim he'll score more than the likes of Drogba,Lampard,Van Persie(if fit) or rooney (yes rooney!)

Made my day, Heskey got a BP (Just got home) which is his first in like ages, didn't get one last season, and that was his first of this season.... Better than the alternative..... Elmander, and he is 0.3 cheaper.... 🙂 Has History been updated yet, I would of presumed it would have but I am the same ranking as I was this morning...?

The Huns? I won't give you a history lesson on them but the Huns were a truly remarkable people who changed the world. Attila was their leader and a hugely successful one, before he died of suspected alcohol poisoning on his marriage night (wife number twenty odd I think)
