The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

    First sniff of the top 10k this season for me! Will drop out when auto subs kick in unless Jara does something tomorrow but at least something to be happy about.

    Thank you Kevin Nolan and everybody who voted in my poll when I couldn't decide whether to play him or N'Zogbia!

    Carrol is the 3rd high scoring MF in this season and he scores both in away and home matches... so looks like, he will be good to have even on long term!

    Fabs, unlike last season, looks just out of touch and his mind is somewhere (in barca). he had enough opportunities yesterday.

    Looks like, this season is the 'season of cheapies'. you cant have some 'super stars' in your team and relax, like you do in previous seasons. Still no reliable 'holy trinity' can be found in FF'2010 🙂

        meh, had two trixies on the rugby, won 100 but hsould have been 700, f**king draw in the racing v perpignan match (they so should have won it, they butchered two clean through try chances)

        had another double today waiting on harlequins (got gloucester right yesterday), and lo and behold, another f**king draw. really bizarre stuff man, the gods seriously conspired agin me this weekend. Im almost at the point where im making a living off the rugby though to be honest,

        on the plus side, won a few singles, notably munster 1-10, and leinster yesterday, and i also layed man city. up about 100, but spent that on the piss last night 🙂

        It wasn't me but at the same time it is not right when someone gives you advice (that I guess you asked for) if it doesn't go well, then you hit on him/her. If you take advice you should be prepared that maybe it can go totally wrong

      Make your own decisions. It's easy to give bad advice when it's not your own team, I've done it loads of times before I'm sure.

      If I'd done what Gargamel suggested I would be 20-odd points worse off.

    Carson - Mignolet

    O'Shea - Foley - Elmohamady - Coleman - Simpson

    Malouda - Fabregas - Barton - Dempsey - Van der Vaart

    Drogba - Chamakh - Odemwingie

    I really only have 1.1 to play with since I want to do Chamakh> Tevez when he is back healthy.

    I need to get rid of O'Shea and Carson and bring in Nani for someone.

    Any suggestions?

            This can't be good advice.

          O'Shea & Berbatov out, defence is a problem.
          The rest looks decent. Don't take my advice as I don't want to get blamed when Berbatov scores a hattrick next GW.

    I'm not liking this scenario in the cup, Brunt needs to score 10 or less to go through.

    Things have just got alot worse for me as regards to my mini league.. the guy leading it was on 63 points before todays games with 5 still to play 4 of which played today..

    Nolan = 20 points
    Foster = 7 points
    Bent = 6 points
    Elmander = 2 points

    He now is up to 97 place overall and still has Brunt to play tomorrow night.. says alot about filling your team with budget midfielders..

    Congrats you lucky b*st*rd

            you do need luck.. bent scoring in the 90th minute meant another 8 point swing as i had williamson and he had bent.. i will still catch him.. i love nothing more than a good challenge.. lol

    I'm beginning to lose faith in Jussie... Wondering of a chance of my "other" GK (along with Foster)... I've read about Robinson, but wondering on the wisdom of doubling up my GK/DF as I have Samba...

    Thoughts please

      Robinson's good, but he doesn't rotate stunningly well with Foster (I've got both) and neither has the sweetest of fixtures coming up. I'd stick with Jussi...

        You're right... I think I'll give it a couple more weeks (I forget when the crazy 2 weeks that they don't rotate well at all is) but now if it's a coin flip between the 2 I'll lean for Foster... Just hate seeing 7 points on the bench...
