The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

          fabs is/was the smart choice

i mean its not going to go to plan every week

Seems Ancelotti is planning on giving him a run.

Something that will maybe help for next week.

Shawcross in his Premier League history scores a goal every 979,8 minutes. He has already played 900 this season which means that statistically either against Sunderland away or Birmingham at home he will score!! Of course maybe he won't and then come later in the season and score 2 in a very short period of time but that is a bit unlikely.

It is not an advice, not at all, but as far as I am concerned he will start in my team the forthcoming weekend against Sunderland and if he doesn't score there he will start again in the next one vs Birmingham.

          *cracks knuckles*

You simply can't say that that Shawcross scores on average every 900 minutes, and its been 900 mins since he last scored, so he must score. Whether he scores this week, the next, or next year has no relationship to his long-term average. You can look at recent form and say that he's scored in the last two weeks so he might score this week, but what you're saying is meaningless.

Look at it this way, you're saying that if Andy Carroll is averaging a goal every other match, he didn't score this week, so he must score next week.....makes no sense.

Sorry for being facitious with my first answer, I hope this helps. Now I'm off to watch telly.

When we say statistically probable we mean that by no means it is certain to happen, but on statistical bases has a really good chance of happening based on previous appearances in the same competition.

Of course he may not score in the next two gameweeks and then come let's say after 1500 minutes in total and score twice in a match or inside two gameweeks. That can happen but as a defender, it is something that is not very likely to happen. Also, the numbers of minutes someone has played in previous competitions, plays a major part in statistics to be correct. The more minutes the more accurate the statistical result. Shawcross has about 5000 minutes of previous PL experience (including this season) so we have a good statistical sample.

I will say again that is statistical probable that Shawcross will score in one of the two following gameweeks. Not certain by no means but very probable by statistical means. Of course, you are entitled to disagree. I will follow it to be honest even it will wrong.

If, on average, it rains in Norwich every 3 days, and it hasn't rained for 2 days, that doesn't mean that it will rain tomorrow. In fact it makes it less likely. I think that's about as good an example as I can do, and also has a huge sample size.

However, the sample size is not the minutes played, but the number of goals scored (I think), which is very small. The low probability of the event (1/900) also means that natural variation will have a very large effect relative to the minutes played. I'm starting to get way beyond my distant memories of stats at school and uni here, and reverting to the Engineer's natural defence of plausible sounding bullsht, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Anyway, best of luck to you!

I am not a native English speaker and writer (as you have obviously understood) and I can understand that sometimes I can get through to the other.

So as simply as I can I will say that Shawcross is due a goal anytime now because of statistics and because he has missed a few good chances already this season for a goal.

I am just curious in your example, when you expect to rain in Norwich. I guess never as of course you are sick of rain as I can understand. Of course, in my case with Shawcross your opinion should be that he will score next Easter or maybe never.

In my mind I have reasons to believe that in the next two-three gameweeks tops Shawcross will score a goal or in the worst scenario provide the assist for a goal. Call me crazy, call me naive or call me Nostradamus I think it will be true.

The return of Johnson is worrying, but Kyrgiakos has showed this year and last that he's an FPL machine when he gets starts though, he has Chris Eagles hair factor which the bonus judges seem to love. I wouldn't be too upset to seem him partnering Agger at the back, we've been desperately missing aerial presence since big Sami left

It has been pretty weird, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

As far as I can tell, and I know that I'm opening myself up to criticism here, but - other than possibly making too many transfers - I can't see what I'm doing wrong to be honest! And yet I'm making absolutely no progress! Don't get me wrong, coming 35,000th the world is far from disastrous, but I'm doing pretty much exactly what I was doing last year..

I think I have been playing the fixtures, rather than the players, too much though.

Yeah, not getting on Elmo soon enough is a classic example. I deliberately avoided him because of tough fixtures, and then he goes and gets 4,9,5,8 against liv, MUN, bla, AVL...

Every week I seem to have at least 8 players playing at home, mostly against shitty sides, but I never score particularly well.

It's perfectly logical that it happens as we're playing a game of odds, risks and rewards. Also the game is very complex and it's hard to identify what is the reason and what is the consequence of the scores you have or have not.

Let's say we every week makes a choice that has a 60% chance to score well and a 40% risk to score poorly, then it's perfectly normal that you will go through barren spells.

I think my FPL skill level for example has been basically at the same level over the four seasons I've played and I've had a finish far worse than the other ones that I couldn't really logically explain.
