The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

Don't you love it when you state something and someone comes and hits you with a negative comment with no explanation.

It is easy to be negative in everything with no explanation, the tough part is to make comments and try to give a logical explanation behind your thinking even if it is the wrong thinking.

I will always prefer a logical thinking based on wrong evidence than a negative status in everything with no thought.

it's humble pie time. i thought kevin nolan was nothing but a tim cahill/david platt type player that contributed nothing in general play put popped up with lots of goals for a midfielder. however today he was everywhere and won everyhting, intercepted everything, his passing was good, his finishing was obviously good and his winding up of john mensah was textbook.
i suppose saying he does nothing but score is a bit of a rubbish criticism as goals are what matters. if he's not scoring newcastle are pretty much playing with 10 men, but right now he is scoring so props to him.
loved the andy carroll scissor kick bouncer over turner's head. precision

Remember when we were laying into Nolan after the Stoke game? Saying that Newcastle weren't going to achieve anything with him playing in the hole*.

He's now the top scorer in the league. Oops.

*Although today was an entirely different formation, so perhaps we can be forgiven. 😉

ok maybe not poor, just remembered the bramble red and mensah almost getting a red for bringing him down. but apart from that i was laughing at his control for the majority of the game. great attitude and work-rate and he is a hand full but still a bit of a clumsy handfull imo. not enough quality for england yet, even with our lack of strikers. he's impressed me twice this season, those being games the man utd game and the 6-0 against villa

Oh I just think he is a bugger to play against, opposition defenders hate him. I think with the dearth of strikers we have he can do a job, he certainly is more deserving this season than Crouch.

Yeah I was defending his corner the other night when people got hysterical when he got booked for fouling Fabregas. Only four yellows in all competitions, not bad at all. Seems to have matured off field and he's improving as a player because of that.

    Thoughts on Elmander please people.

Brought him in this week and watched him play today for one of the only times this season and can't say I was overally impressed, his touch was dodgy at times but it was how deep he was at times that worried me, does he always play that deep? I knew before hand his record at home was poor but now I'm really thinking is it wise to have someone with a record at home that bad, I know it's a knee her but do we think a swap to Odemwingie is more sensible?

Did you watch the Fulham game? Because from what I've heard, he was excellent. Although I guess that that doesn't really matter from an FPL perspective.

He doesn't strike me as a natural goal scorer though, and his record in the Eredivise - where Kuyt, Kezman and Alfonso Alves all scored goals for fun - backs this up.

Besides, he's playing out wide at the moment isn't he? With Dempsey and Gera down the middle.

Wolves, Wigan and Blackburn at home in the next 5, with Rooney injured too. Yes please!!

I didn't quite anticipate Villa being so shit, otherwise I'd have definitely gone for Arteta over Young. Damn David Moyes and his lack of information regarding injuries!!

Anyone else have that rival who puts so little effort into their team but gets incredibly lucky week after week?

I made his team for him GW1, but he's taken control ever since.
I [stupidly] had him start with Drogba, Malouda, Carroll, and Bale

But he's transferred in Etherington, Berbatov, VDV, and now Vidic right BEFORE massive hauls...all master strokes

Just think it's funny, and hopefully his luck will dry out soon haha

Read this about the explosive used in these plane bombs:

"Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) is one of the most powerful high explosives ever known. In addition to being used as a plastic explosive, it is also used to treat certain heart conditions."

    Treat certain heart conditions?! WTF

ha.. Was taken aback by how much cheating he did today. Kyriagkos dominated him from start to finish, so Davies had to resort to filthy cheating.

"resort"? Come on, don't give him that much credit. I'm pretty sure he wakes up every morning and elbows his kids to get first use of the toilet..then dives down the stairs for a free kick.
