The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

    Should I trade Brunt out for Nolan? Brunt seems more consistent (assist every week), while Nolan is inconsistent, but is capable of scoring an odd double-figure score.

    Is Coleman still good value in everone's eyes? Yes he plays OOP and yes he got the cleanie points this weekend but had he been brought of 5 minutes earlier everyone would be cursing him and shipping him out already. Are Coleman owners worried? I ask this as I was hoping to bring him into my team this week but starting to have second thoughts...

      I'd be wary, from what i've heard he's not been great the last couple of games and with Everton having a few players coming back from injury his place must be under threat?

              I'm amazed that - other than the odd tenuous link with Arsenal - he's never linked with the bigger clubs in the league. Especially after Citeh paid 22 million for Lescott. 😉

              Jagielka was clearly the class act in that Everton partnership he had with Lescott, but the goals Lescott scored from corners seemed to persuade people that he was the better player.

      I'm a Coleman owner, and I'm worried. I'm not going to sell him til he actually gets dropped, but not sure I'd buy him - you might have to sell him soon, possible waste of 2 transfers. He is very good value if he plays, though...

        Perhaps more of Spurs play go through him rather than VDV, and the player replacing VDV might actually PASS THE BLOODY BALL to Bale every now and then rather than just shooting at sight,

      I rate him pretty highly. Him and Muamba make a seriously combative midfield duo, and I think that they're the top two in tackles made according to the Opta Stats here...

      Liverpool had no right to win that game today, although I don't know what happened to Bolton in the last minutes. The goal was almost inevitable.

      Shame that Elmander reverted back to his old ways today, or else Liverpool would probably still be in the relegation zone. Sigh.

            Yeah, it really is..He went through a phase at City where he was battling, tracking back and picking up a yellow card a game..There definitely is talent there but he's just a complete tosser in general.

    Ok off to bed. Cracking, wonderful, fantasmagorical result today. My FPL team is still on the slide, frustrating but I believe I have the right players and it will sort itself out pretty soon.
    Just a word to the wise to all the kneejerkers out there, getting Newcastle players in just before Arsenal away is plain daft. Plus look here

    GW11 = 6-7 Nov
    GW12 = 9-10 Nov
    GW13 = 13-14 Nov

    Thats a lot of football very tightly packed. Bound to be rotation, injuries etc so save your transfers if possible

    Reo-Coker at 4.4 is tempting. Playing high up the pitch, getting in goalscoring positions and team captain.

    Ciaran Clark playing in midfield is also tempting

    Pity Villa have such poor fixtures

      Their fixtures aren't that bad! Although when bringing Ashley Young in I was under the impression that they were better!!

      4 home games in the next 7, and two of them are Blackpool and West Brom.

        But he's a completely new player under Houlier. He barely played under MON, but he has been playing high up the pitch, as an attacking midfielder behind the striker.

        I'm defo looking at him.
