The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

Just to put a nice candle on the cake that was my self inflicted crappy week this was how my match ended up in the FFS cup.....

    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/eventhist.mc?id=32676&event=10

99 weeks in 100 J O shea would have came on instead of Wes Brown, Or failing that most would have expected Boswinga to get 20min.

Instead off the bench comes none other than Shola "im gona score huge this week" Ameobi.

      hehe... That sucks.

Although Carlo did say that he was about to bring Ferreira on for Ivanovic - before Ivan scored - so it seems as though Bosingwa was never in his plans.

I wonder if O'Shea's time in the team has ended... He was subbed off for being useless against Stoke, and hasn't featured since.

Only thing is if you manage to escape without losing too much ground, you're usually in a solid position for the next few weeks..There's nothing wrong with the odd 12 point hit surgery if it means 4 or 5 weeks of being confident about your team..in saying that, I've been a bit of a wuss this season.. An 8 point hit and a 4 point hit is all I've done

Well generally your always relying on players to perform but this week looked like it was gona be a big one.

One of the major reasons I took the hit was I wanted to sell 2 player (Tevez & Malouda) who had huge ownership and thus wasnt really helping my ranking.

Selling Gerrard & Konchesky were valid moves perhaps a week too early.

The team I had on paper which would have done so well in hindsight looked horrid.

My H2H opponent had Nolan this week and somehow I'm still in with a shot, Williamson will come off his bench for O'Shea giving him an extra 2 points (10 point lead) And he has Adam left to play and if he doesn't feature then Carroll will come in and f*ck me over so I NEED Adam to make a 5 minute cameo, so he'll have an 11 point lead, and oh yeah, I'll then need Brunt to score 12 points 🙂

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what the ramifications of today are....

Every time I've seen Elmo play, he's been absolutely terrible. So I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't start against Stoke. Mind you, Welbeck wasn't any better today.

Shocking..His failure to see/want to see Bent when they were clear on goal was just terrible. To be honest, I don't even know if he would have the ability to pick him out. Mummy is just as bad when it comes to final pass/delivery.. It's therefore not surprising that Malbranque seems to be the only one in that team capable of assisting

Sunderland STILL have one of the finest home defensive records in the league. Derby games are always unpredictable, I know this being an Evertonian. Bruce may make the odd change here and there, but if he wants Bent and Gyan together upfront, it's Wellbeck who will be sacrificed. What a selfish player he is.

Malbranque filling Welbeck's role and Gyan coming in maybe? Or Cattermole who looked like he had another red card in him today, no point keeping a player on the pitch who clearly does his best to get off it as soon as possible.

Early days i know but i need a defender for £6m (or at a push £6.4m), who do ya reckon? My (rather long) shortlist so far is Jagielka, Coleman, Koscielny, Clichy, Boateng, Huth, Shawcross, Hutton and Gallas

Nope, ideally i want someone for £6m or under. At a push i could go to £6.4m but not for someone going to Anfield. Plus i've watched both of Chelsea's last two games and they have been poor

In fantasy terms, Shawcross and Huth haven't done much this season. However, they looked solid at the weekend and it was Faye's error which led the Everton's goal. If they can get their backline right, I can see their fortunes turning quickly.

Jagielka was solid as usual too.

These questions are always pretty hard to answer, because a major part of the decision is how his fixtures will rotate with the rest of your defence. i.e. who has the best fixtures when you'll definitely need them, and - no offence - I can't be f*cked to look at that for you! 😉

All that said, Jagielka looks like the best option to me. Everton are better at the back than most sides and they have great fixtures coming up.

8 green arrows in last 9 GWs hooray (and Varney tomoro)
I really, really think it's a good idea to save the transfer this week. Is it 3 GWs in 10 days from GW 11 to 13, am I right?
I know lots of people had a poor week and will want corrective surgery, but I think holding onto 2 free transfers could be vital with injuries/ rotations.

        then fabs + etherington => nolan + nasri/walcott
