Having only scored two league goals prior to this season, Alex Song was virtually the last player in the Arsenal team expected to find the net with anything approaching regularity this time round. However, the Gunners man has surpassed all expectations with three goals in the nine games he’s played in already, which is, somewhat bizarrely, the same amount as Arsenal’s current main centre forward, Marouanne Chamakh.

After grabbing the 88th minute winner against a resilient West Ham side buoyed by the performance of Rob Green, Song found himself the subject of much praise by Arsene Wenger, who went on to say:

“He is amazing because he came as a centre-back, becomes a defensive midfielder and now he plays like a striker….He has added something to his game. When you sum up his game today he had three good chances: the goal he scored, the one on his right boot and the header in the first half that touched the bar. When you get two or three chances in the game as a defensive midfielder that means you have good timing. He has got the taste to go forward, even if I think a little too much sometimes for a holding midfielder! But that is part of our game as well.”

These passing chalkboards, comparing Saturday’s game with last season’s home match with West Ham, show an attacking side to Song’s game that he has previously failed to utilise.

Defensively, in last season’s match (left), 54% of all Song’s passes were made in his own half, whereas just 38% were made in his own half last weekend (right). Going forward, Song made only 6% of his passes in the Hammer’s final third last term, but made a fantastic 23% this time round.

Wenger went on to claim Song’s application in training has played a major part in the turnaround, saying:

He is now a good trainer but this was not always the case. Song has improved his engine and his mobility. He doesn’t need a breather now when he goes and comes back. That has added something to his quality. Now, since he has more stamina capacity, when we win the ball, he is on the move straight away and, when his timing is good, he arrives at the right moment in the box.

These heatmap comparisons from the same two games, showing the ground Song covered last season (left) and this season (right) illustrates his manager’s point perfectly. Last season the vast majority of areas he covered were in his own half, whereas this term, it’s exactly the opposite.

Another example of Song’s increased attacking role is the number of goal attempts he’s had. Through the entirety of last season, Song managed just 10 shots at goal but already he’s had 9 shots at goal with the campaign only just over a quarter done.

In terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Song’s classification as a defender last season saw him a worthwhile proposition, but with him coming in as a midfielder this time round, most people have been clearly deterred. However, with this more attack-minded role, Song’s performances are definitely food for thought. Added to the goals is the fact that he’s still racking up the Bonus Points -he has seven so far already, only three less than Nani- and at just Β£5.5m and owned by just 2.8% of managers, Song is showing a consistency that suggests this more attacking approach could be a fruitful one.

Thinking of doing Berbatov > Hernandez..

1 'problem'... I'll have chuffin 6.7m in the bank doing nothing! But want 2 freebies again next week as think there will be a few injuries.

Yeah he's in better form, and quite a lot cheaper than Berbatov.

I also expect him to play the next 4-5 games whilst Rooney finds his way back.

If I do SAF will start Macheda alone or with Berbs

Would it really be that shocking if they won at home against Inter under Benitez? Maybe i'll put some money on Spurs myself.

Ok I will try to predict tonight lineup for Chelsea:

    Cech,
    Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cashley,
    Mikel, Essien, Zhirkov,
    Kalou(Sturridge), Anelka, Drogba

Do we think Kalou will start for certain? We didn't see much from him lately, look like he is down in the pecking order or?

Zhirkov upfront and Ramires in the middle is also option, but if I have to choose will go as above.

    Opinion?

RMT - Champions League if anyone is up for it. Playing my WC this week and have amassed the following:

    Ryzhikov - Wiland
    Alex - Smalling - Maxwell - Kaleshin - D. Navarro
Nani - Nasri - Coutinho - Van der Vaart - Pablo Hernandez
    Messi - C. Ronaldo - Kalou

    0.4 M in the bank

Heres some questions for u guys, this is my potential team for this weekend if all fit:

    Foster
    A.Cole Samba Simpson
    Fabregas Malouda Nani VDV
    Drogba Carroll Elmander

    Jaas Nzog Gohouri Jara

    1) is that the right 11 or do I play Nzog for someone?
    2) Shall I:
    A) save my transfer and reluctantly play Simpson
    B) make 2 transfers as Gohouri would be out and I could downgrade Elmander/Nzog and get a better defender. (have no money to replace Gohouri with someone who plays)

Have Berbatov up front, but lets be honest, he is bone idle and if hadn't of got the hat-trick against Liverpool, would have less points than Bent.

As I have Nani, I am thinking of transferring Berba out for Hernandez as a much cheaper option for next few game weeks, until Rooney back.

Worth a 4 pointer for this weekend?

I would earmark hernandez as a better option in the short and possibly even long term if he continues to perform...

I know it seems like a bit of a crab move, but I can see hernandez really outscoring berbatov, as well as gaining a potentially lucrative run of price rises...

People people ... take a breath ... now ... take another one!

Everyone seems to lose sight of what their trying to achieve in FPL ... it's ALL about consistency ... not who can get the best weekly score ... plan for the future ... !

Teams must have certain players in their team i.e Cashley, Nani, Drogba etc ... then its down to individuality and inspiration ... !

The amount of times i read on here "ye but he's so cheap ... !" SO WHAT ... just becos he's a bargain doesnt mean it's worth it ...

Pick players for the long term and for stability ...

Im not saying by any means not to take advantage of certain players ... ! Certain teams with a favourable run of fixtures etc.

What i am saying is players like Malouda / Drogba / Berb (to an extent) perform week in week out, everyone puts them in their teams and as soon as one of them has a quiet couple of games its "right, Malouda's doing nothing, im gonna get rid ... " ... its pathetic!

This game is NOT a sprint ... its a marathon and patience is the greatest virtue!

I would like u to, I don't really believe there is such a thing. People would probably say Drogba but there's plenty of people near the top of the leader board who haven't had him.

People getting rid of Malouda are getting rid because of his extremely high price and low points return, on top of the fact he's a risk of being rested.. You can't afford to have a player costing 10mil or more to be scoring 2's quite regularly.. Long term game or not you'll be missing out on points!

Alright lets forget CL for a minute then. This is my squad for the following week:

    Foster
    Elmo - Bosingwa - Baines
    Nani - Nasri - Fabs (C) - Van der Vaart - Adam
    Drogba - Hernandez

    Hahnemann - Carrol - Enrique - Jara

Should I consider doing Nasri for Arteta? I know he's in great form but since I have Fabs already, might it be better to get in on Everton's kind run of fixtures? It would be for a hit as well.

my guess (and it is a guess) would be that SAF would want to put CL qualification to bed tonight, so will play a strong team (cue the exact opposite!). they have 7pts from three games and 10 from 4 games would mean they had all but qualified with rangers closest with 5pts after playing 3. if they man utd won they would be six points clear with 2 to play (and yes i do have my shoes off!)

What Chelsea defender is "safe" for the purposes of the Champions League? I don't think any of them are if they wrap things up tomorrow night, need to replace Bonera and I am looking at A.Cole, but leaning towards Cech too as he appears to be the only one that may play more, but then we could be seeing a youth team if they have it all wrapped up early

    Cole_A Elmohamady Evra
Nani Nasri (C) Etherington Yaya Toure Malouda

4.5 mill in the bank. 2 transfers.

I don't know. I'm sure Sir Alex will find a way.
It seems that Premiership players aren't capable of playing 4 games in 2 weeks. And I think Nani & Evra have travelled to Turkey for tonights game.
My pair of Chelsea players and Arsenal players are also at risk of rotation.

I think there's a fair bit of evidence suggesting that the majority of players can manage 4 games in 2 weeks. You're worrying about nothing! I'd be more concerned about shuffling Yaya Toure out.

thinking this weekend of going for a 5 man defence, team would be -

    Foster
    Dann, Elmo, Coleman, Tamas, Alex
    Nani (c), Malouda, Fabs
    Drogba, Berbatov

on the bench will be Bale, Brunt and Carroll. Given the "favourable" fixtures for the defenders, do you think this has a good chance of yielding clean sheet points?

Indeed, but surely only the same as trying to predict who will score at the other end?

        My thinking is -

Birmingham at home to West Ham = good for Foster and Dann
Sunderland at home to Stoke = good for Elmo
West Brom at home to Man City = no Tevez for City could = good for West Brom
Everton away to Blackpool = good chance for Everton clean sheet given their defensive season so far
Chelsea away to Liverpool = Liverpool not great this season but obviously have a good chance of getting at least one in against Chelsea
