Having only scored two league goals prior to this season, Alex Song was virtually the last player in the Arsenal team expected to find the net with anything approaching regularity this time round. However, the Gunners man has surpassed all expectations with three goals in the nine games he’s played in already, which is, somewhat bizarrely, the same amount as Arsenal’s current main centre forward, Marouanne Chamakh.

After grabbing the 88th minute winner against a resilient West Ham side buoyed by the performance of Rob Green, Song found himself the subject of much praise by Arsene Wenger, who went on to say:

“He is amazing because he came as a centre-back, becomes a defensive midfielder and now he plays like a striker….He has added something to his game. When you sum up his game today he had three good chances: the goal he scored, the one on his right boot and the header in the first half that touched the bar. When you get two or three chances in the game as a defensive midfielder that means you have good timing. He has got the taste to go forward, even if I think a little too much sometimes for a holding midfielder! But that is part of our game as well.”

These passing chalkboards, comparing Saturday’s game with last season’s home match with West Ham, show an attacking side to Song’s game that he has previously failed to utilise.

Defensively, in last season’s match (left), 54% of all Song’s passes were made in his own half, whereas just 38% were made in his own half last weekend (right). Going forward, Song made only 6% of his passes in the Hammer’s final third last term, but made a fantastic 23% this time round.

Wenger went on to claim Song’s application in training has played a major part in the turnaround, saying:

He is now a good trainer but this was not always the case. Song has improved his engine and his mobility. He doesn’t need a breather now when he goes and comes back. That has added something to his quality. Now, since he has more stamina capacity, when we win the ball, he is on the move straight away and, when his timing is good, he arrives at the right moment in the box.

These heatmap comparisons from the same two games, showing the ground Song covered last season (left) and this season (right) illustrates his manager’s point perfectly. Last season the vast majority of areas he covered were in his own half, whereas this term, it’s exactly the opposite.

Another example of Song’s increased attacking role is the number of goal attempts he’s had. Through the entirety of last season, Song managed just 10 shots at goal but already he’s had 9 shots at goal with the campaign only just over a quarter done.

In terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Song’s classification as a defender last season saw him a worthwhile proposition, but with him coming in as a midfielder this time round, most people have been clearly deterred. However, with this more attack-minded role, Song’s performances are definitely food for thought. Added to the goals is the fact that he’s still racking up the Bonus Points -he has seven so far already, only three less than Nani- and at just Β£5.5m and owned by just 2.8% of managers, Song is showing a consistency that suggests this more attacking approach could be a fruitful one.

Really don't know what to do with Tevez now. I would probably get rid but there's no striker that really appeals to me.
Already have Drogba & Berbatov so not keen on Chico.
Bent has bad fixtures after this week.
Not interested in Chamakh, especially with Bendtner lurking and RVP returning.
RVP won't be worth having for a few weeks yet.
Even the budget options like Carrol & Elmander have tough games so they're out of the question.

At the moment Balotelli or Adebayor look the best options which isn't saying much.

    Any suggestions?

Carroll & Elmanders fixtures aren't that bad short to mid term IMO and Bents a steady eddy who can score against anyone, but if u can manage without Tevez it might be best to keep hold of.

I was bigging up Adebayor last week as a good Tevez alternative, and he did get his goal. But I wouldn't go for a Man C striker now.

How about the Yak? Two good fixtures for Everton.

if you already have drogs and berba, that's plenty for strikers right now. make sure you have a strong midfield as it's crucial this season and simply play w/two strikers until tevez returns- i wouldn't sell as he'll be back for the derby.

      In exactly the same situation.

I had a chance two days ago to get Tevez out and Hernandez in before rises, but I decided to wait for team news.

I think my team is good enough to ride this gameweek out, and with two gameweeks in quick succession, having two free transfers could be really useful.

Also, I agree with you that there just aren't any good replacements. Hernandez is a decent choice, but I dunno, I just think he might not be as good in this period as he has been so far. His fixtures aren't great after this weekend.

    Minor problem with my defense.

    Foster (Robinson)
    ACole, Elmo, Alcaraz (Jara, Djourou)
    Malouda, Nani, Fabs, Brunt, Adam
    Drogs, Berbs (Odem)

1 free transfer this week, empty piggy bank.

Should I risk not having a back-up defender this weekend, or should I get someone in? Givet is the same price as Djourou, and Blackburn might be a better better than Wigan for a cleanie... Or should I hold off and save the transfers?

I’m looking to improve my team in a long term transfer move, i’ve had enough of Malouda, but will only get rid for a chelsea defender (ideally A. Cole) and use the extra £’s elsewhere. My Current team is:

    Robinson, (Carson)
    Dann, Mummy, Konchesky, (Perch, Jara)
    Fabs, Malouda, VDV, Nani, (N’Zogbia)
    Berb, Drogs, Carroll

What do you think of these moves,

    A. Konch, Malouda, > A. Cole, Brunt
    B. Konch, Malouda, N’ Zogbia > A. Cole, Arteta, Mulumbu
    C. Konch, Malouda, Perch > A. Cole, Brunt, Alex
    D. Konch, Malouda, > Alex, Arteta

    Is Brunt even worth considering?

Think I will get a 6m range midfielder in for Vaughan. Current options are Adam(favorite), Brunt, Song or Parker.

Not sure if I have the guts to go for one of the latter 2 as no one in my minileague has them and I have to make up some ground. What do you think?

Like i said, I'd be tempted to save the transfer and play the same team.

Some good options there but surely if u are chasing then getting someone different is the way to do it, if u get the same players as ur rivals you'll never catch them!

I see your point, but it's also about not losing to much ground, which is happening right now for me. It might be too early in the season to look for differentials. Losing out on Adam's and Cole's BPs every week is costing me.

yes, I think so. as soon as RVP is back he will take all penalties and reduce Fabs goals dramatically. as long as RVP is fit though...
On the other hand Fabs is an assist machine.

    hello everybody..
Im a new fish here.. i would like some advices on my team from those who are experienced..
    my team:
    Cech
    A.cole elmo coleman
    Cahill Nani Brunt Fab(c) Silva
    Chamakh Hernandez
I know I might've went against the drain by putting silva in but since i'm playing in a mini league alot of the players are similar so i thought he could be a differential.. nevertheless, tevez is injured so i think he might do some damage..
please let me know what u think.
