The Knee Jerk

You could nearly make a half decent eleven with the players who didn’t play this Gameweek. I was tempted to sit and try and get a team together just to highlight this fact and, well, I could have done it but it got a bit contrived. (Alex Baptiste?)

Needless to say there was a number of high profile absentees which left some gaping holes in players teams and pushed peoples benches to breaking point. Of those missing Nasri, Adam and Alex were irritations but it was the absence of out of position defenders El-Mohammady and Coleman which will have got players worried.

Much is made of the out of position player and to find one is, well, it’s great. To find two therefore is, without wanting to sound lame, absolutely amazing. Many will have both these players as their respective price, attacking potential and ability to keep clean sheets will have made them obvious picks. To have them both out and to etch doubts into our collective minds about their ability to start games going forward is an unwanted distraction. Indeed many have already discussed potentially taking these players out of their teams.

One key thing to consider and remember is the fact that at this time of year, as games come thick and fast, Premier League managers do tend to rotate. This is especially true in situations where games come on Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday. It’s important to take a FFS team deep breath, step back and appreciate the fact that rotation does happen, particularly with players of lower value. This is the knee jerk and the knee jerk reaction is to remove these players. Going forward we don’t know if this is just a rest or if this is a long term issue therefore it’s worth waiting to see what will materialise. For example in Coleman’s case Fellaini’s late red card should lead to a shuffle in the Everton midfield. This could mean Heitinga being called into the centre or a re-call for Coleman.

Elsewhere it was another week of captains under performing. Before the games (and particularly during) people were talking about dropping Drogba, Fabregas and Malouda. Whilst there may be some merit in considering other options such as Torres, who appears to have found his goal scoring form, surely it is only a matter of time before these big hitters begin to find form again. As such my logic follows as above, hold tight. Knee Jerkers (the players, not the articles) tend to act quick, spend points and regret their moves a couple of weeks later. Patience is advised.

Overall though its fair to say these midweek games have been ones to forget. Thankfully we only have to wait two more days until the weekend. Expect more rotation and more headaches going forward. Stay tuned on the site and through our Twitter for updates.

For once was really confident about this week, particularly after VdV scored for me yesterday! Alas not to be. Surely my players will turn up one day?!

bloke leading my main mini-league hasn't actually made a transfer all season... doubt he even logs in...embarrassing...!

Bring on the weekend i guess...!

Every single week I look at my team and think 'oh look, I have at least 7/8 players playing shit teams at home, it's bound to be a good week.' And every single week I do hopelessly.

9 at home this weekend, with Cesc and Jussi playing away.... It's bound to be my 4th 30-odd pointer of the season.

I have had Arteta for 4 weeks this season, in games against: bla WLV blp BOL. And he's scored me:

      2 2 2 2

In the weeks I haven't had him, against considerably harder opposition, he's scored:

      5 7 2 6 6 8 6

      Sums it up really.

I'm glad I have other transfers so I don't get tempted to take him out. Would love to have him in my team all season, hopefully my loyalty will get rewarded.

Will probably need weeks to fix my defence now, hate having to make transfers in defence.

Yes, but City don't appear to be much of an attacking force and tevez seems to be all the attacking City cover you need.

Its up to you, of course, but Cahill would appear to be the bringer of more points than Silva if these first 12 GW's are anything to go by.

Thinking of: Drogba > Torres and Bale > Van der Vaart with my 2 freebies this GW.

Want to go 3-5-2 now. This move leaves me with no money in the bank though. Should I do it now (unlikely either of them rises tonight according to totalFPL, but if one does I can't do it without a pts hit) or wait to see if they hold up til Friday?

Why did you have high expectations? The two midfields were Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher vs De Jong, Barry, Toure. And none of those six even tried to attack all game...

It was pathetic, not so much from United because a draw is undoubtedly a good result, but Citeh were embarrassing. By the end of the game I didn't even want them to win - which would have been the ideal result for Chelsea - because no one should be allowed to win football matches playing like that.

Not surprised that there were boos at the end, if I was a Citeh fan then I'd be horrified with the direction Mancini is taking them in. They have all the money in the world, and that is the best they have to offer. Pathetic.

+1 although Fergie took off Berbs for Chica, so he wasn't exactly going for the jugular neither.
Can't believe that Mancini still has Yaya at the front of the 3 defensive midfielders. All strength and no guile.

Il just leave him in and get the points.

    Hey guys

How does this Wild Card sound (if lampard is back fit)

    Foster, (Carson)
    A.Cole, R.Ferdinand, Konchesky, (Simpson), (Foley)
    Nani, Lampard, Cesc, Adam, Parker/Barton
    Tevez, Carroll, Odimwingie/Piquionne

Any thoughts? Only thing i'm missing is VDV, really wanted him.

    Cheers =]

No chelsea cover then apart from cashley 🙁 want penalty taker/free kick/ corner drogba or lampard as chelsea should score the most goals this season? Having cesc, lamps and tevez does suck dry my funds tho

At the moment I'd settle for just Cashley instead of Drogba.

I have Alex but he's annoying me as its 2 cleanies I've missed in last 3 weeks because he's been injured!

      Argh! Stop getting 'Odemwingie' wrong!!

Dunno how far away from fitness Zubar is, but he is the first choice RB at Wolves so I'd be careful with Foley...

Ferdinand is permanently crocked, so if you can afford either Vidic or Evra, then that would be preferable.

Rest of it looks pretty good, although I wouldn't bet on Lampard starting against Sunderland. Don't get Parker in though, nor Barton because if there is any justice his be serving a three match ban pretty damn soon.

      Oh, and Odemwingie > Piquionne.

Foley is first choice. He was first choice in the promotion year and Zubar only got games initially cos Foley was injured.
        Foley will play.

Pretty certain that that is wrong...... Zubar was first choice RB for the majority of last season when he was fit. No one gives a shit about 'the promotion year', Zubar - a Champions League regular for Marseille - wasn't around in 'the promotion year'.

Since your "team link" links to a business card website no one will be able to view your team to be able to give you advice.

Arteta to VdV is a solid move but Varney might not be too far behind Carroll this week considering Blackpool have West Ham while Newcastle play Fulham.

Yep, Barton was back to his old tricks. He deserved some credit for failing to react to extreme provocation in some other games, but he's blown it. Again.

This could be bad news for Carroll owners. Quite a few of his goals have come from Barton's crosses. And Barton will get banned.

    Foster (Robinson)

    Konchesky Alex Elmo (Foley Williamson)

    Malouda Adam Fabs Nani (Etuhu)

    Caroll Drogba Tevez

What change to make this week.

Im thinking of jumping on to a bandwagon and going with Torres. Liverpool have nice fixtures albeit some away and the fact they still haven't got that good results except Chelsea, but Torres is scoring. Then again Drogba had malaria so perhaps thats holding him back.

Could get rid of Malouda for VDV maybe but Spurs fixtures aren't great. Then again no doubt VDV will continue to score in all of them. Most of my opponents have Drogba and few have Torres. A lot of them have VDV.

Tough to see which transfers to make for most of us this week, I imagine. I often feel there are one or two players I'd really like to get into my team, with one or two failing in my team.

The trouble is, there are no consistent big-hitting performers at the moment. No one stands out.

Personally, I probably ought to get Tevez in for Berbatov, but that means dropping Malouda (or Fabs). No problem, I hear you say! Well, who the hell, do I replace him with!!

I may start focusing on those who are in form, irrespective of long-term class.

Ah well, I'm still sure I'll get into the top 1000 next week. Or the week after. Or the week after...

Yeah, I'd be tempted to bite the bullet and just get rid of Malouda (for VDV) despite the decent fixture coming up this week.. Other than that I wouldn't change it, because it looks fine...

And I'd play Foley ahead of Elmo this week. In fact, I'd also play Williamson ahead of him. Elmo 3rd sub. 😉
