A five goal feast at the Britannia Stadium; whatever next? At least Rafael Van der Vaart stuck the script. The Dutchman notched once again in a disappointing 1-1 draw for Spurs, maintaining his record of scoring in every game he’s played at White Hart Lane; a case of “he started so he finished”…

Tony Pulis made four changes to the Stoke side for Birmingham’s visit to the Britannia, as he looked to stop a run of four straight league defeats. Suspension to Ryan Shawcross allowed Danny Higginbottom a chance, but the defender put in a nervy performance at the heart of the Stoke defence. Jermain Pennant and Rory Delap’s ability to fire balls into the opposition box also saw them start against Alex McLeish’s men. Robert Huth produced an impressive aerial display at both ends of the pitch that saw him grab a goal, while a moment of magic from Ricardo Fuller and a scrappy tap-in from Dean Whitehead were enough to win the points for Stoke. Sir Paulos

Birmingham brought Craig Gardner and Jean Beausejour into the side and benched Alex Hleb and Keith Fahey for the trip to Stoke. Fahey eventually replaced the Chilean winger to notch the visitors’ first goal before Cameron Jerome netted the second. Alex McLeish’s outfit came back from 2-0 down for the second time in four days, but this time their toils were in vain, as Stoke finally saw off their visitors in an unexpected goal-fest. Birmingham have now conceded 2 or more goals in 5 of their 6 away games so far this season, worrying news for Fantasy owners of Ben Foster and co. Up next? A trip to Eastlands, where Carlos Tevez awaits..Sir Paulos

Harry Redknapp made a handful of changes from the team that lost 4-2 up at Bolton just a few days ago as it was David Bentley’s turn to make his first start of the season, Tom Huddlestone was recalled back into central midfield and Roman Pavluychenko rewarded Peter Crouch a rest. Rafael Van Der Vaart also declared himself fit to play and proved vital once more when combining with Peter Crouch (off the bench at half time) to score his seventh goal in six games at White Hart Lane.

Van der Vaart continued his incredible scoring record at home then, once again compounding the difference in returns between him and team-mate Gareth Bale. The Welshman again contributed a paltry two points for his owners. Ironically, while Van der Vaart had suffered a price drop in the FPL in the last 24 hours, Bale has increased in value. It won’t be long before that situation is reversed. With his goal threat and overall contribution and influence on Tottenham’s play, Van der Vaart continues to look the far more viable option and even the most stubborn of Bale supporters will surely be making plans for Rafael.

Spurs have, rather surprisingly, scored just 14 goals from their 12 Premier League games this season and have not kept a clean sheet since the opening day of the season. Despite Van der Vaart’s influence then, there are concerns for Redknapp at both ends of the field. Jermain Defoe will surely walk back into the side once fit.

Roman Pavlyuchenko was subbed at half-time with a back in injury, while Redknapp also revealed post-match that Robbie Keane has picked up an ankle knock. Both will be doubts for the home clash with Blackburn this weekend.

Opposing manager Steve Bruce didn’t want to be bested on any fronts however and he made six changes to the team that lost to Stoke with the likes of Titus Bramble, Anton Ferdinand, Bolo Zenden, Kieran Richardson and Craig Gordon all coming in, the most notable absentee was that off Ahmed Elmohammady who was only afford a place on the bench and went unused on the night. Whether this was a simple case of rest with a deep squad at a busy time or something else, things will need to watched closely from here on in. Elmohammady had been subbed in his previous two Gameweeks prior to last night’s game – indication that his starting role is far from secure. With Craig Gordon now installed back in goal for Sunderland – Simon Mignolet’s value as a budget Fantasy proposition looks bleak; Gordon had an outstanding game on his return.

The Black Cats travel to Stamford Bridge next, with Bruce perhaps likely to stick to the formula used to snuff out Spurs in the second-half of last night’s game. Anton Ferdinand, who started at left-back, will be an immediate doubt for that game however – after limping off on 18 minutes last night.

Record signing Asamoah Gyan once again proved effective in rescuing Sunderland a point; he capitalised on a mistake between Kaboul and Gallas and duly slotted home. The likely absence of Darren Bent for the next couple of weeks should also see the Ghanaian look to capitalise on a run of games and begin to share some of the goalscoring burden. Bent and Gyan are still the only two players to have scored for Sunderland in the league so far this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can you do Berbatov out for Tevez?
Maybe with a bit of fund-raising elsewhere? (e.g. Ridgewell out for Foley)

Or you could go for Hahnemann this week. Good fixtures for the Wolves coming up.

It's interesting that Keisuke Honda has been linked to Liverpool. He'd be a top signing for 9 million quid. Think that he'll have an argument with Gerrard over free kicks after this effort?

How much do you have in the bank? Ideally, you'd have the option to transfer in players for Barton or Odemwingie depending on fixtures and form.

I have N'Zogbia as my rotating midfielder at 5.5m and Carlton Cole who should be good for the next 4 games at 5.8m. Then it's a case of handling injuries, suspensions when they happen.

That's a good squad of players though.

Right. 2 free transfers for this weekend. Need to address my Van De Vart problem. As in i dont have him and i want him. Love some advice from current or non owners!
Long and short of it is that one of my main rivals has VdV, whereas i have Malouda (both of us have Drog). Im thinking about downgrading Malouda to VdV and then using the money to upgrade Knight to someone like Alex or Kolorov (if fit!). Main concern is that i'm 80ish points behind and we have very few other different players. Do you think i should hold onto Malouda or buckle and get VanDVart?
    THANK YOU

Isn't it obvious? If you need to catch up, you need MORE different players. Buying VDV is pointless if it's simply because you want to catch up. Your rival will still get his points too you know? He doesn't stop getting them because you've bought him 😉

That logic only works towards the end of the season. The bottom line is that if Van Der Vaart will score lots of points, you need him in your team regardless of rival teams.

Personally, I would look to switch another player rather than Malouda. But if I were ranking midfielders on a must-have ranking I would place Van Der Vaart above Malouda and below Nani at the top.

Van der Vaart is a more dynamic player than Malouda. He catches the eye more so will attract bonus (except for last night it seems), and carries an equal if not greater goal threat to Malouda at a much cheaper price.

I've had Malouda from the start and wouldn't be buying him at 10m+. While he takes the odd corner, he's not on free kicks or penalties and will only score well when Chelsea dominate the weaker teams. I'm looking for a bumper return against Fulham and Sunderland or will downgrade so I can afford Torres or Tevez.

Cheers chaps, that's kind of what i was thinking. I cant keep Malouda just because my rival doesnt have him. I think VdV will be more consistent (pennas, FKs, bps etc). Only concern is that TOT arent scoring that freely at the moment (in the PL at least; 12 in 14 or something?).

Think i will re-assess after this week. Do you know if you can 'double-carry over' your 2 free; so i used one out of two yesterday, and if i did the same before sat would i still have 2 free next week? Cheers

    Krul (Carson)
O'Shea Coleman Samba (Gohouri and Murphy)
    Nani Adam Brunt Cesc (Albrighton)
    Tevez Piquionne Drogba

I have two trade options that I reckon look the best way to go. There's the direct route for the team, and theres an all round improvement.

    A) Brunt->Gerrard
    B) Brunt->Cahill, Gohouri->Alex, O'Shea->Konchesky (last trade is optional)

    Thoughts?

There's more money to play with this season with Gerrard playing deeper (therefore not essential), Lampard only just returning from injury and Rooney still sidelined. Torres may be the next 'essential' but we'll know more after the Wigan game.

As a result, don't feel you have to splash the cash. Get a Chelsea defender in at the back and perhaps strengthen one of your keepers. The teams that are doing well now are raking in the sixes and sevens at the back as everyone can afford Cesc, Nani, VDV, etc.

It's what happens once fans have tasted glory. They think they deserve the same year after year. They don't realise others teams improve (and get worse) and the whole game runs in cycles. I support Everton and knew we wouldn't get Champions League football year after year so enjoyed it whilst it lasted a few years back, I think Tottenham fans should do the same because based on their league form they will be lucky to get Europa League.

    Bale > VDV.

Have the funds for a straight switch, and am thinking of just pulling the trigger. The man is on FPL fire, and looks set to just keep scoring from his Oop role. Forgert Bale, hes Harry's key man, and i see him playing off a lone striker for the rest of the season. The .6m rise would usually put me off, but its getting hard to resist...

Morning all - does anyone know if Simpson is now a guarateed starter for Newcastle? I have Williamson but need to downgrade somemone to bring in VDV for Nasri. So it's either Williamson, Faye or Jones to a cheapie (4.2m max) , or I could do Hernandez to Elmander. Which option looks better? Which cheap defenders seem the best choices?

Don't think Zigic touched it - I think it was a defender headed it out to Fahey. The press association immediately gave the assist to Carr, which was bizarre. I've only seen it the once so can't be sure but to give no assist seems correct for that one.

I watched Zigic closely in the Stoke game and he repeatedly looked to run in behind the Stoke defence only for the Brum players to punt the ball up to him.

It's obvious that his Valencia and Croatia team mates treated him as a skillful footballer playing passes into the channel that they would for a Defoe or Torres, which is completely lost on McLeish and the Birmingham players. They see a 6ft 6 target man and expect him to play like Carroll.

As for your assist question, sorry I've no idea 😉

Already have Drog, Torres, Fabs, Nani, VDV who I feel are all key or at least I want to keep them in my squad. I am also trying to find a way to squeeze Tevez in without getting rid of any of them. Would mean doing the following transfers over a period of 2-3 weeks:

    OUT
Ameobi, Arteta, N'Zogbia, Fabianski, Konchesky, Carr

    IN
Tevez, Ferguson, Albrighton, Carson, Foley, Bardsley

    Would leave me with:

    Krul, Carson
    Simpson, Coleman, Jones, Foley, Bardsley,
    Nani, Fabs, VDV, Albrighton, Ferguson
    Drogba, Tevez, Torres

Would obviously play a 4-3-3/3-4-3 every week depending on DEF/MID players fixtures.

    Thoughts?

Only other option if I want Tevez in is to get rid of Torres, will see how he performs over the next 3 though. But if I do want to get ALL of the big 6 mentioned above there is no other way than to downgrade Arteta, N'Zog and switch a few defenders.

The only rule they could implement to be completely consistent would be any opposition touch means no assist. Personally I feel this is the only fair way to do this as, although a tad strict, at least means everyone is in the same boat and so can't feel hard done by.

Having said that FPL should definitely keep the assist on Etherington 😉

course they did, did they stick an extra 50 points on your score as well as a sweetener? It's a machine, they won't change anything once it's happened. My mate did 14 transfers once and missed the WC key, just hit confirm transfers - he wrote to them pleading for them to undo his error and execute his wildcard but it's big business, they told him to stick it where the sun shineth not.

I prefer Tevez. I still need more reassurance that Torres is back to his best.

However one is currently fit, the other homesick, depressed and not fit.

What a horrible start to the day reading that Captain Tevez might not play

It's been like that for a few gameweeks now - but he still seems to play more often than not, so I wouldn't worry too much.
