Having failed to domestically mirror his headline-making Champions League displays over the last couple of months, Gareth Bale has been a source of frustration for his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners. Today, however, the Spurs winger came good with an inspired performance as Harry Redknapp’s side put four past visitors Blackburn.

Bale’s two goals and an assist will surely be followed by the 3 Bonus Points, giving him a total of 18 points from today’s game, which is, incredibly, the combined tally of last eight gameweeks. Given that Rafael Van der Vaart had scored 48 FPL points in the same period prior to today’s game, this gives an indication of just how much Bale has been underachieving in the Premier League, in comparison to his team mate.

Spurs had scored just 2 goals in their last 2 league games at White Hart Lane and were booed off the park last weekend, but today, Harry Redknapp moved from 4-5-1 to his more conventional 4-4-2 formation, which will undoubtedly have influenced today’s scoring.

With Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up top, Van der Vaart was moved from his role behind a lone striker out to the right wing, where he still managed to supply two assists in the home win. Consequently, this was the first home game he has failed to find the net since joining Spurs at the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Bale’s goals were his first since Gameweek 2 and is just reward for the 43.5% of Fantasy managers who have shown patience with him, despite the above-mentioned run of low-scoring. He now sits just 1 FPL point behind Van der Vaart, and dependant on the Dutchman’s Bonus Point allocation this evening, could overtake him by this evening.

Bale sits at £6.8m right now, though his price has been as high as £7.1m this season. This week will no doubt see further heavy investment in the Welshman, despite Spurs travelling to the Emirates next weekend for a North London derby with Arsenal. Clearly, however, Van der Vaart’s consistency is a more dependable source of points and with Redknapp changing the system from game to game, it’s still debatable as to whether Bale is the best Spurs midfielder to have in your FPL squad. His explosive skill and ability to score big, however, was illustrated in emphatic style this afternoon.

I know city had a shocker last night(I actually expected 0-0) but whats everyone's thoughts on Kolarov? I was only ready the text updates but he seemed very involved, taking corners, free kicks and having shots on goal!

He is an attacking defender. Before he got injured he was taking set pieces for City (obv no pens as that is Tevez's domain).

If he hadn't been injured I imagine he'd probably be just behind Cole in the defenders table with all the clean sheets he'd have had. Prob would've got some bonis too.

He should start seeing 90 mins soon but at £5.7m he's good value on a tea that will keep a ton of cleanies this season.

He didn't save the penalty, Pav missed it - he hit it wide. That means Pav just lost points for missing the pen.

Didn't see the penalty, did he save it or did Pav miss the goal completely? Keeper has to touch it to get a save.

Everyone uses their WC differently. If your team is going well then using it for no real reason seems a waste. Using it in a DGW is an idea or using them back to back is another method if a DGW occurs in those weeks.

thanks. No my team went through some very poor weeks overall but when you look at it on paper its pretty good with no major surgery required so i'll be sitting on wc's. some weeks i've been lucky to get over 20 points and then i get a week like this where i'm over 60 with 4 players to go. I think its a real up and down year

+ 1 agree with you TM,each person had different approach on WC .. imo if your team had many injuries and want to get rid of some players who are not performing at all and way behind your opponent in ranking eg playing h2h league then USED it now without second thought nevertheless the decision is yours ok!
we still have the second WC which begin Gameweek 22 (4 Jan 19:30) up to the Gameweek 27 deadline (12 Feb 11:30)after that it's gone with the wind - and can't be carry forward so use it wisely during these period to reshuffle your team ....

    Wow!

Looking at the next 5 fixtures, a Bolton striker and Man Utd defender are pretty much 'must haves'. Both have got 4 of the next 6 at home. Lots of blue boxes too.

I think Vidic/Rio and Davies/Elmander over those GW's and you can't go wrong.

I would say yes. Richards doesn't make the team and Kolarov will probably be first choice left back now. Might also give Man City the attacking impetus they need and give you some attacking points.

Agreed. Three defending midfielders don't play very wide and Mancini has also used inverted wingers who cut in like they were Robbens. Both of these things leave plenty of room for fullbacks to use. First choice fullbacks most certainly are Kolarov and Boateng, centrebacks Kolo Toure and Kompany(?).

Keep Anelka, If Drogba won't be fit he willl be the lone striker. The rest is a gamble i think. Tevez is worth every penny but because of Mancini's 4-5-1 with 3 defensive midfielders ... Toss a coin

Id keep elmander since hes on fire, has great fixtures and is a very good price and one the rise.

Id definitely dump anelka, hes injured, poor fixtures and plays second fiddle to drogba, not guaranteed his spot in the team.

Out of torres and tevez im not sure. Ive got torres but liverpool are so bad currently. Both man city and liverpool are struggling to get goals but if they do its enevitable the respective players will be heavily involved. Id probably go tevez, little cheaper, bigger bonus whore, less injury prone and better fixtures.

Certainly wait until tomorows matches are finished, and also you might learn from Ancelotti's next press conference that Alex might still be out so it would pay to keep Bosingwa one more week.

BP's are regularly given to 'popular' fantasy players. Those that have a high ownership are awarded them more than 'fringe' fantasy players.

Too much bias towards fantasy favourites IMO.

He set up the winner for Vidic. Put a goal on a plate for Wes Brown in 1st half. Similar cross to back post in 1st half which that lazy bulgarian tw*t wouldn't lower himself to attack. Agree that he probably didn't deserve a bonus, but was far from the worst player on the pitch. Brown, Park, Berbatov were way ahead of him in that race.
