Having failed to domestically mirror his headline-making Champions League displays over the last couple of months, Gareth Bale has been a source of frustration for his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners. Today, however, the Spurs winger came good with an inspired performance as Harry Redknapp’s side put four past visitors Blackburn.

Bale’s two goals and an assist will surely be followed by the 3 Bonus Points, giving him a total of 18 points from today’s game, which is, incredibly, the combined tally of last eight gameweeks. Given that Rafael Van der Vaart had scored 48 FPL points in the same period prior to today’s game, this gives an indication of just how much Bale has been underachieving in the Premier League, in comparison to his team mate.

Spurs had scored just 2 goals in their last 2 league games at White Hart Lane and were booed off the park last weekend, but today, Harry Redknapp moved from 4-5-1 to his more conventional 4-4-2 formation, which will undoubtedly have influenced today’s scoring.

With Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up top, Van der Vaart was moved from his role behind a lone striker out to the right wing, where he still managed to supply two assists in the home win. Consequently, this was the first home game he has failed to find the net since joining Spurs at the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Bale’s goals were his first since Gameweek 2 and is just reward for the 43.5% of Fantasy managers who have shown patience with him, despite the above-mentioned run of low-scoring. He now sits just 1 FPL point behind Van der Vaart, and dependant on the Dutchman’s Bonus Point allocation this evening, could overtake him by this evening.

Bale sits at £6.8m right now, though his price has been as high as £7.1m this season. This week will no doubt see further heavy investment in the Welshman, despite Spurs travelling to the Emirates next weekend for a North London derby with Arsenal. Clearly, however, Van der Vaart’s consistency is a more dependable source of points and with Redknapp changing the system from game to game, it’s still debatable as to whether Bale is the best Spurs midfielder to have in your FPL squad. His explosive skill and ability to score big, however, was illustrated in emphatic style this afternoon.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Anyone bringing in Kolarov? Looked pretty dangerous on attack a couple of times, and should have the left back role locked down now you'd think.

Yep, in for Konchesky. It's not Konch's lack of cs' that piss me off, it's his lack of attacking potential. Was touted as an attacking lb with plenty of crosses etc but I've not seen any of it. his fk today was woeful.

You'll have to go for Rio, Vidic or Evra I'm afraid. A quick look at all of United's defender's minutes this season should tell you that.

I've decided to get K.Davies, sooner rather than later to free up funds for Vidic, but the decision of who to drop is really difficult.

    A) Berbatov
    B) Tevez

The former has obviously proven he shouldn't be given many more chances, but the three next fixtures are so good. Tevez is better long term, but the coming fixtures aren't, and he is looking kinda uninspired too.

    What do you people think?

My stubbornness to not get Van der Vaart is slowly coming to an end – he now appears to be fixture-proof. But who to transfer out? Nasri, Brunt or N’Zog? Was going to get Vidic this week for Elmo but could leave until next week – I think VdV and Bale will both rocket this week. What should I do?

Why is Van der Vaart fixture proof? He's got 7 and 10 in home games against Sunderland and Blackburn...

Only if he keeps that sort of pointage up over the next four is he fixture proof.

Exactly, and the home games that he's scored in have been Wolves, Aston Villa, Everton and Sunderland.

Possibly when Defoe comes back, and they play 4-4-2 more often, VDV will not do as well. With the fixtures that he has coming up I would not transder him in now.

I'm booting VDV, Carroll and Drogba this week during my Wild Card.

OK lads I think I am gonna knee jerk first time this year and gonna make early 4 point hit (have 2 freebies)

    Thinking:

Arteta (happy), Enrique (happy), Tevez (not so happy, but happy to knee jerk) all out

K.Davies (great next 6 fixtures, BP machine), Nani and Vidic in!!!

I am starting to think that City are not scoring goals and that's why I am not so keen on spending 11m on a striker which plays 5 4 1.

The only thing that scares me that after International brakes there aren't CS's so Vidic won't be necessary, but he will rise tonight.

    Opinions,
    Cheers,

You mean under Mancini? Not many times. It's so much wrong with what he's doing with that team/money, although it should be stressed that it's not easy to buy a team and make it play good football straight away.

I might write a longer piece on this some other day but it takes time for a manager to impose his ideas on a side and for the players to know eachother.

Man City used to leak goals like crazy, now they don't, so it looks like their taking onboard his defensive ideas pretty quickly.

Plus it's not just how the players are playing with each other, it's also his team selections, (3 defensive midfielders etc), and if he really was attack-minded, he would not do this.

Yeah but clicking defensively if you don't have a planned attacking play is easier. Being good defensively when you also want a plan on what to do when you retrieve the ball is harder.

Every bought team in history has struggled initially, but I actually think we agree that Mancini is hindering rather than helping this team to gel.

Both Sven and Hughes played a more attacking and made the team more popular than Mancini is.

I can eventually free up enough money to get Ivanovic in the future, though it will take me another two weeks. Question: Is Ivanovic a sure starter, and if so, is he worth the extra cash compared to getting Boateng (and a side question is, which of O'Shea or Jones do I want to keep around an extra week or two?)
