Having failed to domestically mirror his headline-making Champions League displays over the last couple of months, Gareth Bale has been a source of frustration for his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners. Today, however, the Spurs winger came good with an inspired performance as Harry Redknapp’s side put four past visitors Blackburn.

Bale’s two goals and an assist will surely be followed by the 3 Bonus Points, giving him a total of 18 points from today’s game, which is, incredibly, the combined tally of last eight gameweeks. Given that Rafael Van der Vaart had scored 48 FPL points in the same period prior to today’s game, this gives an indication of just how much Bale has been underachieving in the Premier League, in comparison to his team mate.

Spurs had scored just 2 goals in their last 2 league games at White Hart Lane and were booed off the park last weekend, but today, Harry Redknapp moved from 4-5-1 to his more conventional 4-4-2 formation, which will undoubtedly have influenced today’s scoring.

With Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up top, Van der Vaart was moved from his role behind a lone striker out to the right wing, where he still managed to supply two assists in the home win. Consequently, this was the first home game he has failed to find the net since joining Spurs at the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Bale’s goals were his first since Gameweek 2 and is just reward for the 43.5% of Fantasy managers who have shown patience with him, despite the above-mentioned run of low-scoring. He now sits just 1 FPL point behind Van der Vaart, and dependant on the Dutchman’s Bonus Point allocation this evening, could overtake him by this evening.

Bale sits at £6.8m right now, though his price has been as high as £7.1m this season. This week will no doubt see further heavy investment in the Welshman, despite Spurs travelling to the Emirates next weekend for a North London derby with Arsenal. Clearly, however, Van der Vaart’s consistency is a more dependable source of points and with Redknapp changing the system from game to game, it’s still debatable as to whether Bale is the best Spurs midfielder to have in your FPL squad. His explosive skill and ability to score big, however, was illustrated in emphatic style this afternoon.

    57 min: THE SCRAPPIEST GOAL IN THE HISTORY OF ALL FOOTBALL!!! Stoke City 1-0 Liverpool. What a scramble this is. Delap takes a long throw from the right. In the six-yard area, Shawcross, Jones, Etherington, Skrtel, Carragher, and Konchesky all try to kick the ball. All fail. Eventually, after about 239 deflections, Fuller pokes home from three yards. That was an insult to the senses. Like Stoke will care. And it's a lead they deserve.

    From the guardian

    ..."after about 239 deflections..." haha

        I'm also wild carding. The team you've got lined up there looks terrific and is something along the lines f what I'm after.

        Fabregas, VdV and Nani are crucial in my opinion - Drogba too pending his performance tomorrow - but the rest is tough. Your defence looks staggering but I worry that I'll be chasing points with Cole in particular. Possibly Vidic too - he's got three goals now. Never scored more than four. Very few defenders even score 5 in a season.

        It's a tough one.

        Thanks, don't know an awful lot about boxing but from what I can gather, Haye is a cocky pr1ck and his main objective will be to avoid Harrison's left fist which is why he's weighed in so light, while Harrison is a bit of an eejit and is very unfancied.

              All of it! True boxing fans wouldn't normally be that excited because it's such a mis-match.

              And, yeah, it's been a while (fecking decades) since we netted five.

              And where did the F Green result come from? Heard on the grapevine that they were, well, shite.

    I wonder what all the Man City fans who think Adam Johnson should always think after today's game?

    And one for Granville: After having a go at the 'Milner boo boys' after the Liverpool game, what do you now have to say about him? 24 million well spent... NOT!

        How much of a goal threat was Kolarov at Lazio? I always thought that he scored a fair few goals there, but looking at Wikipedia his record isn't that good.

        Didn't Mourinho once say that he is the second best LB in the world behind Ashley Cole?

          He is indeed a good leftback. I liked what I saw from him today. Doesn't really score alot of goals, some of his goals from Lazio was penalties too. I also don't think he has scored any free kick goals, his goals are from open play.

          The fact that he is on corners is indeed very tempting. Even if City is the only team not to have scored on a header this year.

                Although it isn't as good as it looks really. Took a gamble 8 pointer last night:
                Dann (6pts) -> Kolarov (6pts)
                Salcido (would've played Givet 6 pts) -> Vidic (6pts)
                Fabregas -> VDV (8pts)

                Can't complain though. Team is set for the next few weeks. 😀
