He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

    Foster, Frul
    A.Cole, Elmo, Alcaraz, Simpson, Knight
    Nani, Fabregas, VDV, Adam, Arteta
    Drogba, Carroll, Harewood

    3.2 mill and 2 trades

    Arteta -> Cahill
    Harewood to Elmander

      Use the money on defense. Arteta > Cahill is a crab move if ever there was one. You chose Arteta over Cahill at one point, stick to it, or leave the Everton midfield.

      Do Alcaraz > Vidic/Evra

      Remember that you need to bench someone from your front 8 every week, so upgrading Harewood would just make your life difficult in choosing between Adam, Carroll and Elmander for bench duty. It will do your do your head in, I guarantee it, and meanwhile, you're leaving good funds on your bench that could be used on more reliable defenders.

    I have 2 free transfers this week , but I am actually quite happy with my team as is (8 green arrows in a row).

    I guess I could bring in Torres and Nani for Drogba and Cahill, but these trades seem like much of a muchness to me.

          Don't. It's way too short term. Trust me in that strikers, high-end strikers, will be back in business soon. The cream always rises to the top.

          Your priority should be midfield.

          You need Nani, and maybe Fabregas when he starts scoring in double figures.

    Does anyone think that Berbatov will start scoring again now that Rooney is back?
    His goals dried up when Rooney got injured.

    I'm not saying that Rooney sets up Berbatov, and I don't get to watch many games, but just seems that Berba was scoring nicely when Rooney was on the pitch.

    Any thoughts?

    Vidic - Elmohamady - Coleman - Foley - Simpson

    Bale - Dempsey - Fabregas - Nani - Lee

    Drogba - Odemwingie - Torres

    0.3 in the bank.

    I am wanting to bring in Elmander for Odemwingie, but would mean I have to sell someone else to make it happen, suggestions?

      I don't like those proposed moves.

      Carroll is pretty fixture proof in my opinion. He got 9 points away at Arsenal. Those fixtures aren't terrible either. A few away games at bottom half teams, Liverpool at home is a great fixture for him, only Chelsea could be hard, but that's only if they start to improve soon. Look at his overall tally. 77 points. That's the second best in the entire game!

      I would only get him out if he's confirmed out for more than 2 weeks because of his injury. If that's the case, then moving for Elmander is an easy decision.

      I can understand a move to a United defender though. They have nice fixtures. I just don't think Cole out is the way forward. He's the Chelsea stalwart at the back, and will start contributing to attacks when they start winning again. He's also a bit of a bonus darling this season.

      Again, this week, just do the regular Tamas or Jara to Foley or Simpson.

      Not sure why you chose Morrison for your bench sitter. Could be a bad choice, especially with the likes of Ferguson, Emerton and Albrighton around. Too late for that now though.

        Cause West Brom's fixtures are good, Morrison's key passes stats are 2nd only to Brunt's in West Brom..

        I could easily bench Carroll next 2 weeks and play Morrison/Tamas but I think over the next 5 weeks Elmander will score higher than Carroll

        Alternately looking at Doyle/Fletcher from Wolves as Carroll replacements for a few weeks

          Not early enough.

          I wouldn't endorse those moves, but you've proven yourself a good FF player, and if you really think that Vidic and Elmander -4 is worth both the lost value on Cole and Carroll and the points, that's your call.

          Cole and Carroll are season keepers in my book.

    I dont like chelseas chances at birmingham , not with Essien missing.
    Birmingham similar to sunderland , they kept Man c quiet and at home can see chelsea struggling . If thats the case Drogbas price going to be in freefall, it will drop this week anyway.

    I will be taking him out if his price is going down , sure he might score a goal , but there plenty of others who can do that .
    Will swap to someone in form then buy him back when chelsea start firing again

      I outlined my case in Drogba's favor on the last page.

      Team dynamics and flexibility are important, and dropping Drogba to someone cheap like Elmander would ruin that. I would only do a big transfer like that if there's a set goal in mind i.e. getting Lamps.

      Remember that Drogba is still on setpieces and penalties.

      What I've found is that sticking with mostly proven players is the way forward. You can have one or two "punts" but how often are you going to guess right?

      My record is about 60%. I've had Walcott, Arteta and Konchesky in my team. It's so hard to pick out the "form" player or hidden gem, and mistakes hurt because of the sell-on fee.

      If you have zero in the bank its very unlikely you'll be able to make those transfers if you dont do them soon, elmanders value in particular will definitely rise by the next gameweek and maloudas will fall. Van der vaarts will probably rise. Im not encouraging you to do it though if im honest id say the only one that needs to be done is the alex one but since you obviously need money from the sale of malouda id probably just do nothing. Your team is good

        Yeah I'm not completely sure I'll do them, but just having at look at different options coz Malouda seems to be out of touch and is not scoring well enough.. Vidic has good fixtures and looks an attacking threat, but costs an arm and a leg.. If I did either of those transfers today I would be left with a max of .7 in the bank, so I think if I still wanna do them next week I should be able to, just... Cheers

      Nothing wrong with your defense.

      You're doubling on Birmingham which isn't ideal, but you've got a tight rotatable budget defense.

      Get rid of Malouda if you want to improve it, and look to get either Vidic or Evra in to catch ManUtd's good fixtures.

      I like your team.

      Making those transfers you have planned seems unnecessary though.

      4 point hits should only be taken if you have an injury to address and can't field 11. (I know, I'm guilty too, but that's the idea...)

      I'd do Arteta > Jarvis only.

      Play Jara this week. He has Stoke at home. Kolarov is away this week and isn't rising in price anytime soon either. Why take a 4 point hit?

    my team

    fabianski/ robinson
    a cole/ coleman/ elmo/ alcaraz/ baptiste
    fabregas/ nani/ vdv/ malouda/ adam
    drogba/ carroll/ varney

    with 1.6m in the bank.

    i would like to get Malouda out to reduce Chelsea players but don't know who should i get in.

    a) Malouda -> Gerrard
    b) Malouda -> Lee (BW)
    c) Malouda -> Jarvis
    d) Malouda -> Etherington

    Or.. keep 3 Chelsea players, but upgrade Alcaraz or Baptiste to 5.6m DF.

    Or.. keep Malouda and upgrade Varney to Elmander

    Sorry for much thinking. Which should be priority for this GW?

      priority this week wise would be getting malouda out as he isn't getting full games....but then again caroll might be out for 3 weeks...so then u'll need your backup striker to play....
      i would suggest do the malouda as well as the elmander move...i know it may cost in point hit which i refrain from doing...but ya thats my honest opinion...

    Hey Camzy/Zophar, can you have a look at my team. It has plenty of issues especially in defence.

    Foster Krul
    Konchesky Coleman FIGUEROA ALEX ELMO
    Fabregas Bale VDV Arteta BARTON
    Drogba Tevez CARROLL

    2 free transfers, 0.0 in bank

    Thinking 3 trades for -4 could be the way to go to address a few areas. Which 3 is the problem.

    Thanks if you reply. 🙂

      You help with price changes, so I'll gladly return the favor.

      Of course, right now, we've got to wait on Carroll injury news, but on the assumption that he's okay, Figueroa and Elmo need replacing.

      Stagger it, don't rush. Elmo can wait this week, I still have a feeling he might play this weekend.

      Figueroa is a weird one, but I don't like Wigan's fixtures or defensive potential. Go with one of Givet, Simpson or Foley. Probably Foley.

      Barton is suspended, so he has to go too. I'd get real bench fodder. Ferguson, Emerton or even De Jong.

      Carroll is an easy swap too if he's injured. Elmander is a super choice considering fixtures and form. I'd wait though. If Carroll isn't injured, he stays imo.

        Ooh just realized you don't have Nani...

        Problem.

        How much do you need to replace Arteta?

        0.8 or so I'd guess...

        Hmm...

        I would consider a 4 pointer then.

        Barton > Ferguson
        Figueroa > Foley

        Thanks Camzy 🙂 Nani is the top priority this week so I'll have to get rid of a fit player minimum unless I downgrade Tevez & upgrade Barton. I like your ideas in defence. Sold Shawcross to Coleman 2 GWs ago with terrible results & for a hit. Figs should have been Alcaraz when I wildcarded early but every season I've have Figs for some part of it. Just have to cop the price rises & what for more info especially if Nani gets injured etc. I'll keep all these ideas in mind. Congrats on being number 2 in FFS. Watch that Granville bloke, he wants your spot. 🙂

              I guess you've got to get rid of Elmohamady early then.

              Elmohamady > Foley
              Arteta > Nani

              I wouldn't get rid of Alex because he's a benchmark price for a straight swap high-end defender.

          I'm not a newbie by any means in FF or in the PL.

          I know the rules of FPL well, and with fantasy tools (which I just discovered this year thanks to this site), I've taken my game to a new level.

          My premier league knowledge has been expanded greatly since the 07/08 season too. In fact, just this summer I had to write individual bios for every player in the league (1600+) for a job. Did you know that Nani was born in Praia?

          I've also found that the more advice I give, the better I do, because it helps make my own decisions more thought out and logical.

    This game is 90% luck & 10% skill.

    The 'skill' part is overrated, it's so fcuking basic you'd have to be an idiot not to be able to apply it. There's a few players from each team that do the damage points wise. You take your pick and you put them in your team.

    The massive luck part is the TIMING.

    Five weeks in - "Ooh look Malouda has scored all those points, I'll stick him in my team", ends up being a bad move cos Chelsea, and particularly him, then have a low scoring period straight after.

    N'zogbia does sod all for a while, the one who says "I'll try Zoggie for a bit" just before he performs cleans up - simples.

    Picking captains - exactly the same. On paper, Tevez home to Brum = points fest, reality = 1 pointer.

    Sooooo much luck in this game it hurts. 🙂

      i disagree, should be 15% skill n 70% luck, 15% captain's poll

      You know what, I agree.

      The timing is ridiculously hard, so I try and avoid it as much as possible by getting so-called fantasy solids, but even that hasn't always worked out.

      Fixtures are also largely overrated.

      Look at Arteta. I've had him for 4 weeks total and he's scored 2 every week for fixtures that on paper are easy and then scores 8 in one game against ManUtd.

      Picking captains I can testify to as well. 5 duff captain choices in a row. It's a miracle that I'm still in the top 200.

      I don't pretend that my good rank is all down to skill, I'm very lucky.

      so true , when you get a good score its skill , when a bad one its luck.
      Easy to forget how bigger part luck plays.
      Was thinking how smart i was dumping Malouda five weeks ago , however, really it was just another risk that happened to pay off. could just as easily turned out badly

    I thought I was being sort of clever when I brought Zhirkov in having seen him play rather well the last time I saw him (CL game a couple of weeks ago). He wasn't any good last night and now I don't want him anymore...

    Anyway, I have to get Nani in. These are the options I'm considering:
    A) (4 pt hit)
    Zhirkov -> Foley
    Brunt -> Nani

    B) (free
    Cahill -> Nani
    (and perhaps still knee jerk Zhirkov out for Cahill, which will of course also keep my Cahill quota on an acceptable level)
